How does anyone here know that there are not going to be entire areas of the game that are going to be dark, bloody, and decayed? How?
1. You've seen one dungeons color pallet. Thats it. blue/green.
2. You've seen what looks like a forest with sunlight and autumn colors orange/reds
3. We haven't seen the flowing blood rivers of hells dominion or the dark, cold caves beyond the world of mortals.
4. I do not understand how any of you would want to limit the entire color pallet to the same desaturated grays and browns you've been posting all over the place.
5. If anything the only thing I would complain about in the demo is the contrast.. which is more than likely a video option.
6. WE HAVE ONLY SEEN <.05 PERCENT OF THE GAME. I think it is absolutely ludicrous that people are jumping all over this right now. Give it time... give it time.
I think the only true way to know blizzard's intentions at this point is to try and get them to release screens of other dungeons and areas in the game, and compare those. For all we know there could be entire sections of the game that are dark and Gothic in nature, and well if this is such a big priority for everyone then maybe we should see something officaly from blizzard.
I must admit, I do want to see horror, dark, and evil in this game, I don't mind the color at all as long as it is conveyed disturbingly. The screens and footage we have seen so far though has not convinced me that blizzard is making everything bright and colorful. I think that is a conclusion people are jumping to no matter what the reality of the matter is based on that footage.
You can't really fault Diablo fans for wanting dark and dreary environments, but at the same time I fear if everything everywhere is dark and dreary thats just boring. Contrast between areas of light and dark are key. the difference between fresh fruit and rotten.
Diablo 3 does not need a light radius. Why? Because this is no longer a 2D game, restricted to flat planes. We can have enemies drop from the ceiling, break through the walls, and strike without notice. Has it ever crossed any of your minds that with a new 3D engine and real-time lighting they can convey horror and the unknown without the light radius?
What happens if your killing baddies and all of the candles or what have you blow out and all thats left is the fain red glow of eye's peering from a hole in the wall, and the dim moon light through the cracks in the ceiling. The wall bursts open without a seconds notice and you are being torn apart by a hideous beast of hell.
Please people try to use your imagination. This is a whole new ball-game, and I believe blizzard can pull it off.
I can't stand those before/after screenshots, I mean really, do you want them to make the beginning that dark? Where do you expect them to go when we get to a place thats actually supposed to be dark? Pitch black?
Furthermore, I don't think its really how it looks (obviously it should still feel evil and dark) but mainly, like Veltras said, what happens. Sure it might look a bit cartoony (I personally dont think it is, as 1. I wouldn't be able to run it if they made it too realistic and 2. Its damn hard to make it much more realistic than that...) but if that supposedly cartoony guy gets bit in half by a Living Siege Engine of Hell, thats pretty damn Diablo-like. Thats what impressed me the most about the gameplay video, sure it wasnt as dark as the other Diablos, but it looked well done and good, and the blood splatters and things like holes in the ground where the barbarian leaps or smashes really made it feel awesome.
Thats what I'm hoping blizzard can convey in this game... A sense of dark vs light. I don't mind if a forest has color and the sun shines through the trees, as long as it is tempered with the next forest being charred and twisted with evil under an ash sky. I think you need both light and dark to have any meaningful contrast. Having everything darker and desaturated just seems to leave you with drab and dull.
I might be in the minority here, but my thinking is this: Alright you can have areas of uncorrupted bright color and light, but contrast it heavily with areas of the game which, especially with the new 3D and lighting engine, I imagine will be extremely dark, and evil. Dark and evil in the sense that it will make D2 and D1 look like fairytale landscapes. I'm talking about hint's of dim flickering light to light your way, walls of rotted moving flesh, and the the wails and screams of the tormented writhing in their eternal prison.
I don't think blizzard wants to give to much away, but I don't think they are going to make a mature rated game all posies and rainbows.
