I love the current style. I still believe there is going to be a stark contrast between good/evil, dark and light. I say wait and see. Also we have seen very little of the game to assume its always going to look like this. I mean come on folks. I do not want the game to be drab, dark, and Gothic everywhere. Just where it needs to be.
The after image is sharpened, the contrast is upped, and they desaturated the color.
I think your problem lies with the bloom effect that seems to soften everything. I like the contrast in the 2nd image but hate the desaturation of color :(.
Sol, I understand what your saying, it's only 2 regions but both of those have the same thing, that dreamy green/blue glow covering everything. This gives us pretty good clue that they plan to have the whole game with this.
I don't disagree that the world should have a lot of constrast, meaning different region, different moods. I have nothing against the outside being with lush vegetations, I have something against the fact that even when it starts raining with lightning, it's still too cheery. That damn dream glow is everywhere and there's no realism because of it.
I could be alone in this but I just think that if they made some tiny changes I would get 3x more addicted to this game than I will be otherwise
What are you talking about? The forest wasn't dreamy green/blue, it was red and orange (autumn) daytime. This game play trailer doesn't give you any indication that everything in the game will look like this.
Am I the only one who hates all this desaturation? I like some of the other post-processed effects, but I really like the color in the gameplay trailer.
A true diablo fan would want everything to be awesome in diablo 3, including graphics.
I am a true Diablo fan and I think the gameplay trailer pretty much made me piss myself because it was so awesome. This is what I wanted D3 to be. I was so worried it was going to be some 3RD person MMO crap.
Assuming they are making this game 4 years. What did they come up with?
Average looking game engine (just play Titan Quest that come out in 2006 which has BETTER graphics) and art style taken straight out of warcraft series, same gameplay with few tweaks, and a new story.
So they took best out of Diablo 2 (gameplay+story), put a pile of warcraft (innovative art design + awesome features like single slot items) in it, and called it Diablo 3.
I'd rather wait few more years for a proper Diablo game, than see this gameplay trailer and screenshots. I thought Blizzard was all about quality of their franchise, but current Diablo 3 build looks like it's done in 6 months, art from wow, badly written engine, and nothing interesting from gameplay view.
If thats what it is, then I as a fan of Diablo games can say, screw them.
Really? I mean did you watch the gameplay trailer? It definitely played like Diablo, and in my opinion look amazing. It looks light years beyond D2 and I thought the boss and mini-boss encounters were really well done. I don't know why everyone's just going bat-shit crazy about the graphics and artistic direction. I don't see a problem with it in the least. It's obviously not going to be WoW or SC2, its going to be Diablo3 and that was evident from the game play trailer so what is the point?
wow the new Deckard Cain looks about a million times better than the old one, seriously. It's funny, because in those new sketches of Deckard Cain he looks more human than that 3D model from the Diablo2.
The Witcher (2007) uses the Aurora engine. This engine was used for NWN 1 back in 2002.
That really doesn't prove anything, since it would have been heavily modified and updated to run Witcher.
However, after having played Witcher a bit, I really did not like how it looked. I was never impressed with the graphics in that game. Sure they are more "realistic" but that doesn't mean they look better imo. I would definitely not be happy if Diablo3 looked like the Witcher.
If SC2 players didnt criticize that look from the 1st picture we wouldnt have that 2nd picture, it's this kind of change we want, more contrast, less colors, more definition, sharper textures, less clean textures, a more mature look.
Can you link me a URL to that Starcraft petition? I can't seem to find it.
The characters and armor look like they were lifted directly out of WoW. Several textures and that one statue that looks ilke a sitting griffon should be detailed a lot better. The rest of it is alright, just please show us another screenshot of something further into the game soon so we can rest easier at night knowing there's something gloomier waiting for us.
The characters look nothing like they do in WoW. They look stylized, but they have much more realistic details to them and are not as exaggerated as WoW characters. and I think the armor looks inspired and interesting. I remember barbarians with huge helms and over exaggerated armor in D2 if I'm not mistaken.
The only thing this game really needs is shaper textures, more contrast, and more shaders.
Please stop making comments about that tiny little griffin stature. It has a low poly count for a reason, So people can play the game on their PC's. Not ever tiny statue is going to have 1,000 polys and a normal map on it...
No-one is complaining about the graphics, buddy, you may want to re-read the thread. We're unhappy with the art-style of Diablo III, not the graphics; two very different things.
Actually, I think everyone's complaints can be solved with texture sharpness, shaders, bump maps, and well, contrast. the art and everything else can stay the same. Other than that I'm happy with the way the game looks.
Alright guys! everyone that has a problem with the Diablo3 graphics as is, I believe I know why.
listen guys the 3D models used to make the characters in Diablo2 were not the best. That being said they are also definitely not copies of the WoW characters. I happen to like the way the characters look in D3.
What everyone is getting caught up on is the fact that right now in D3 there are no shaders/bump maps in the game. This means all the surfaces look the same and have a "painted" quality. Believe me, if that barbarian had some sort of specular shader on his skin and a dull metal shader on his armor you would be saying how awesome it looks. What gives everything that flat painted look is simple: One shader for everything with one kind of texture map that only contains the painted/drawn information.
What is need is this:
1. Multiple shaders for different materials to give it that "real" feel.
2. Bump/normal maps for surfaces so they look like distinguished from on another other than just color and the texture painting. (i.e. the surfaces has tactile qualities).

Thats the point. It's all opinions, and everyone will disagree with something.

Dear god no! please no realism. realism always ends up looking bad and out of place. No, Oblivion did not succeed at realism.
Sigh... first off.
