listen guys the 3D models used to make the characters in Diablo2 were not the best. That being said they are also definitely not copies of the WoW characters. I happen to like the way the characters look in D3.
What everyone is getting caught up on is the fact that right now in D3 there are no shaders/bump maps in the game. This means all the surfaces look the same and have a "painted" quality. Believe me, if that barbarian had some sort of specular shader on his skin and a dull metal shader on his armor you would be saying how awesome it looks. What gives everything that flat painted look is simple: One shader foreverthing with one kind of texture map that only contains the painted/drawn information.
What is need is this:
1. Multiple shaders for different materials to give it that "real" feel.
2. Bump/normal maps for surfaces so they look like distinguished from on another other than just color and the texture painting. (i.e. the surfaces has tactile qualities).

whatever happens. this game better not lose all its color and turn into another gray and brown fest. I am sick and tired of seeing gray and brown everywhere in games.
Keep the color, sharpen the textures, add shaders and bump/normal maps, go into video options and increase contrast.
There, that's all that needs to be done. If blizzard can do this, they won't have to sacrifice there style but the world and characters will look more real and dynamic and not look like straight paintings on the surfaces.
I'm re-posting this as my last one got screwed up some how.
I do agree that the flat painted textures do look rather WoW like though. However all this can change with normal/bump maps, different shaders and sharpening of the textures. The idea of giving armor a metal diffuse shader would make it look shiny or dull metal and more like solid armor.
The idea of adding dampness to the rocks in the dungeon but using a wet looking shader on some of the stones would give the appearance of a dark, dank, wet environment. This also works for solid dry rocks as well, giving those rocks a matte shader with a bump map would look like rough earth.
This biggest flaw I can see with the characters though besides the lack of shaders on the armor, is that there is no specularity on the skin at all. the skin should not look so flat and dry. It should have a sheen to it.
These changes would not require the art style to change at all but would give the appearance of realism through stylization since people would automatically recognize these materials as what they are meant to be in game, and it wouldn't seem just like a painted surface.
In the end its really as simple as adding bump/normal maps to the existing textures, and adding different shaders to objects already in the game to convey a sense of reality to the world around you and your character.
The Charachter models are not neerly detailed enough, I love the look of items in D2, especially the full body plate armour that first appears in ACT4, im really not for the leather half naked barb that i saw in the vid.
I guess you just answered your own question there. People are over analyzing this video and jumping to conclusions about everything left and right. I mean who knows what armor will look like in the later acts of D3 (assuming it has acts). I'd imagine there is going to be some awesome looking full plate.
Assumptions can be made, and many people have valid points based on observations from the video. However There is still so so much we don't know about this game that all this speculation seems like a big waste of time.

Alright D2's tetris inventory scheme was horrible. If your talking about the character equip part of the inventory screen then I don't really care about that. However if your talking about the tetris inventory, that was just god-awful. I remember constantly having to rearrange loot to fit more loot, and port back to town all the time to unload or sell it. Honestly give us bags, and one slot items as long as I don't have to stop killing enemies every 10 minuets or so to go back to town.
Its like this:
"Wait no stop attacking... alright I'll be right back to smite you all to hell.. but I just got this rare sword you see and I'm out of spac... wait no, no, I'm not leaving for good, I'll be back. Yeah don't worry about that. Hey, hey! you over there I see that spear. Damn little flyer's think I won't see them. Alright I should only have to do this another 20 times in the next 2 hours. BRB."
Why not have graphic options in game to switch betwen this more colorfull and more dark theme? This would be the best sollution cuz everyone would be happy this way.
I think that items graphics need improvents. In d2 items looked more gothic and were fitting atmosphere. Here we have axes that look almost same (i mean images). Other items looks also too much cartoonish. Item images should be bigger and inventory tetris should be restored
I really, really hope that you were joking about tetris inventory. That system was horrible.
I would also like to add (I already made a length post) that I would like to see more of a return of certain objects on the "map" that really enhance that horrific feel I was talking about. Examples of what I'm talking about are; Dead Rogues put on poles/lying dead on the ground, Trapped souls in Act 4, and other things like that ... I hope I got my point across, I've already typed a lot on the subject
Everybody on hells charred earth wants that. I don't think blizzard is going to forget that.
You know what? The most thing i would change are TEXTURES, which are very poor and too smooth. There is also too CLEAN. I don't know if you noticed that. It looks like 50 years before Diablo actually first time came... I don't know how you could be happy with that when you played Diablo so long. Well.. you maybe didn't pay attention to graphics. It's POSSIBLE. Then you can vote on leaving everything as it is. But you are right too, i would like to see MORE, coz now i see a fragment. But from what i can see i don't like what i wrote in THIS post mostly. About colours i can live. Coz i know that there will be more dark places (but i don't know on the other hand.. there is GREEN everywhere, and you can see a monster from 20km away, how could you be possibly scared?). No no no, first option is some kind of misunderstanding for me. The last option, yes. It's good too. People should vote on that if they are not sure (but i don't know how they are not. Maybe they just didn't think about it deeper).
Cheers, i have nothing against you
I will agree with you on the textures.. they seem a little low resolution and lack detail. I also noticed a lack of shaders in the trailer as well. However that may also just be because this was an early build? A lot of the graphic optimizations and details are added in latter towards release.
look, the cinematic we saw was rated M cause WWI08 was M rated. I want blood. Where's the blood splatters everywhere and the corpses on the floor? and the raging fires?
In hell and later in the game most likely. If not then I'll be a little upset. However just becasue you didn't see this in the trailer doesn't mean it doesn't exist. Which is what people seem to be forgetting here.
I've stated my reasons for why I think it will work in previous posts. I'm not going to jump to any conclusions until I see.
1. more areas of the game.
2. new builds of the game.
3. some kind of damning proof that they replaced hell with some sort of cotton-candy factory.
4. I do not think bright colors are a bad thing in Diablo3. I do think however it must be tempered with areas that are dark, twisted with evil, and a color scheme to match. I like variety and I don't mind the colors as they are now.
go read over some of the other posts there are some very good arguments as to why it should be left as it is.
One more thing. I feel that adding the doom and gloom everywhere just strips the contrast between light and dark out of the game and becomes repetitive and drab.
I've played Diablo 1 and 2 for years and years.

yes they are, and they look boring.
if you were having fun organizing you stash... I don't know what to say, but man that's crazy.

really have you played the game? I'd imagine diablo3 would have night cycles.

I don't think you need to worry about that... judging from the level of violence in the game.
@SPAZ
I don't know about all your points.. I mean poison was bright green in D2 and there were lots of glowing effects for spells. (Paladin anyone).
I think whats throwing everyone off might be the bloom... or softness of the images. Maybe the lack of detail/bump mapping in some of the textures.
Everybody on hells charred earth wants that. I don't think blizzard is going to forget that.
