The news was not surprising since it made sense that the beta would be Q3 of this year and then early 2012 would be the release date of D3. The Live coverage I think was pretty cool and you guys did a good job! only thing I would not like about it was the constant trolls in the Live Comments part of the youtube page. Also when Blizzard had a Q&A ... nobody had any questions for D3 it was all about WoW and COD!? Like who gives a crap about those games lol
Right there with ya.

Well its an investor conference call, so they're going to talk about the biggest moneymakers (aka WoW and CoD).
Beta means a limited chance to play the game. I was hoping to get more info about the soundtrack, about eastereggs, about unicorns, about the acts, the enviroment but mostly a year it will be released, you see. Im have personal issues right now and I need good news.
Its a financial call. We basically got the best news out of it that we could (other than a May/June beta). Their not going to spend time going in depth on a game's mechanics/graphics/etc.
However, an upcoming beta does mean that in the next few month's we'll get plenty of info about any unannounced systems.
Thanks guys! Pumped about the beta. If I don't get to play it myself I will at least get to see tonnes of new gameplay footage from Force and the like.

Good point you bring up on how they keep their share holders in the dark. I guess their track record of success is what allows them to do that without people pulling shares out. Though I'd think most of them are more interested in how WoW is going to do in the future, since lets face it without WoW Blizzard isn't Blizzard in the minds of the share holders.

Dolaiim no worries, good discussion is good discussion right?
NO. I WAS FIRST. Actually I freaked cause I thought my account was compromised for a second. I just recently got identity thefted, so I'm a bit paranoid.
An yes I'd agree earliest is July, though again.. Logic says Blizzard never reaches goals at the earliest possible date.. Again, when July 20th rolls around and the BETA isn't here yet I'll say I told ya so again
Definitely. That's why I made sure to say the earliest a beta could start is July 1. The latest a beta could start is Sept. 30th.
You missed one key point. The use of the word "target". Target does not imply guarantee, so we don't even know for sure if it will be Q3. That's partly why I am so disappointed.
Some good news is better than none. Looking forward to Beta
Well put.

I'm not sure where the disappointment is coming from; did anyone expect an actual guaranteed date? We knew they weren't entering beta until the last systems are announced, is it wasn't going to be imminent (i.e., this month). That means anything is still an estimation on their part. They were right on par with what they said along these lines for SC2, I think they've gotten a better grasp of their own dev cycle and I'm confident in their goal of a late summer beta.
Hey guys. I'm merging this thread with the thread on the main page about the call and beta release. Continue with the discussion. Nothin' to see here folks.

There was some interesting talk along these lines. Morhaime is terrible at answering shareholder questions. He openly admitted when asked about wow subscription "churn" that more people are leaving WoW than joining. If I'm an investor, here's how I see it:
1. BlackOps is doing great, but they spent a little too much time talking about the nickels and dimes of DLC 2.
2. WoW is dying.
3. Starcraft II does not bring in subscription revenue, so it's already priced in.
4. Diablo 3? What the hell is.. Oh yeah, that franchise. No subscription revenue, no real timeframe, no care.
5. They've announced a new MMO that they haven't announced yet, so the universe might run out of electrons before THAT thing comes out.
Conclusion: sell.

I believe the Beta will happen mid-late Q3, at this point with them already under internal testing that is perfectly reasonable. Still, a Q3 beta likely means 2012 release, I've repeated myself so many times in the past 15 minutes but even if the game goes gold soon after the beta, it takes months to deal with paperwork between Blizzard and their distributors.
Edit: Damn you Umpa, you just confused the hell out of me for a second lol.

For me, I don't see how the beta could last more 3 months. This isn't an MMO where you can let people play the entire leveling experience(seeing as that's going to be where you spend the majority of your time in Diablo 3) and just save the endgame content for release. I can see them MAYBE giving us most of act one and just having us find bugs with the game itself(i.e. problems with certain computer specs etc.). It'd be silly of them to give us most of the game to beta test.

You make very depressing, but good points there.. lol. Although looking at the even bigger scheme of things, I think Blizzard is in a little bit of a rut. WoW is old, say what good things you will about it but in 3 years it will be ancient in terms of video games. Blizzard knows this I'm sure. So on top of anything else, I'd bet they are planning a grand release for their new MMO that will kick start a new generation of Blizzard games, which can be funded from the pay to play plan that will undoubtedly be part of it.
If I were an investor, as long as the market holds I'd wait it out.

That's exactly what I got out of Machinima's "Blizzard Entertainment Part 5." Frank Pearce said "I would say that even though we have these really popular franchises, Warcraft, Starcraft and Diablo.. If you look at our track record over the last 10 years or so, really you could make the argument that we've just been the Warcraft company." Morhaime added some color to what Pearce said by staring all sadface at his shoes.
It's hard for me to accept the timetable for D3 because Blizzard constantly and openly admits short-changing their other franchises for the sake of WoW maintenance. Yes, they're working their tails off, but they need more engineering resources to actually get the thing done in a timely way.
I thought it was interesting that Morhaime hinted at changes to their development structure to facilitate faster release time frames. I don't have the quote but I remember that distinctly.

External beta between July and September - I can wait. But you know what would really help the wait...
