Edit: this is on a whim.. no research done, and it has been a while since playing d2.. so I'm sure some names are off.. and such... but you get the idea none the less
This is my twist on OldFan's idea of a melee magic class... so thank you for the inspiration OldFan...
I agree with the idea.. with some modification....
I would love a melee/magic hybrid.. but you would have to keep it from being a cleric or pally... so I suggest:
Melee abilities that are enhanced by magic (obviously...)
Defense with magic (a telekenitic sheild, blocking ranged attacks, and reduces chance to be hit by melee attack for X seconds), Flare (blinds enemies), Kinetic Absorption (takes X physical damage and turns it into HP or maybe aditional damage/attk speed... without hurting player), engergy absorption (takes magical attacks and adds to mana)
Close Range Magic - Energy Sword (magical energy blade out of each arm, does X damange - or energizes the current weapon), Freeze/slow target, telekinetic push (violently throws enemies, dealing damage and letting you get some space), premonition: see what will happen before it does (increases chance to hit, slows enemy movement, and increases chance to dodge)
Levitate: Fly above the ground, increases movement speed and well.. other stuff... think it would look cool...
Plus a variety of unique melee attacks and defenses.. such as BladeStorm: A massive surge of kinetic energy allows inhuman agility, allowing your character to move faster than the eye can see attacking all enemies withing range mulitple times for X seconds.. and see.. you can use this with something like flair and energy sword for a brutal combination..
And more.. without the loss of armour (or atleast, being able to use decent armour).. the idea would be agile melee attacks supported by magic... you could also go the heavy/strong route, but I feel that makes it much more like a cleric...
The Character itself...
Class: Outkast or outCAST if you prefer... or we can call him a Maverick, but that might bring political implications, or copyright violations against McCain..
Story: Oringally practicing magic at X (some place fancy) to become a sorcerer/wizard... the outkast found the ranged attacks too withdrawn for his liking, he/she wanted to be in the action fighting it out against his enemy. His ways were looked down upon, and he was punished for his use of physical force at the school. He left without warning, travelling to harrogath at a young age to train with the barbarians (or somewhere else to train with knights) - He never lost touch with his original magical teachings, eventually mastering a hybrid technique of magic and hand to hand combat. The barbarians excomunicated him for his "dark ways".. forcing our hero to wonder the lands of sancurary as an Outkast, not welcome at the only two homes he ever had...
Even if one takes every reefer madness allegation of the prohibitionists at face value, marijuana prohibition has done far more harm to far more people than marijuana ever could
thats a good idea, I like. Kinda like the Assassin with fists of fire, and that stuff, I always love the idea of geting pounded by fist, and MAGIC! Like Houdini on steroids.
Heh... similar question went through my head.
If it wasn't spelled with a k, I probably wouldn't hate it so much.
And no... the k doesn't sound cooler. It makes you sound like an idiot.
Aaaanywho, enough with spelling.
I like the class overall, the magic/combat combination would be something new to the Diablo series, most of the spellcasters thus far have been frail and unreliable in melee.
I also like the two skill trees of defence and combat magic, possibly pure combat skills could be another tree ?

Exactly what i was thinking... and the magic combat skills could work with the combat skills to make a very fun/lethal character... combining a rapid attack combat ability with an energy blade skill combined with a slow enemy skill would be wicked.. and various combos of the like..
and for the record, i was not high, merely VERY sleep deprived.. which some might argue is a very similar experience...
And when u create your character hes a rasta black male named andre

furyana perhaps... or.. or... Mana for both... difference being, the character can build mana by doing physical attacks, and has an increased mana restore rate naturally.
If a mod would change the title spelling to Outcast, it would be great, that way we could discuss the build rather than the spelling of the name,,,

This.

That's because they're casters, not meleers or caster/melee hybrids. It would be like saying the Barbarian was an unreliable caster
All this talk of a magic/combat combination already exists in the form of the Druid and works quite well. I don't know specifically about this character idea, but I would like that style implemented again.

Sounds pretty cool, but calling it an OutKast has made me hate it. Bad spelling is not cool at all, just makes you look like an idiot.
It's not bad spelling. Makes you look like an idiot for not knowing Outkast.

I wasn't even thinking of the music when I named it, I just typed it with a c and a k.. and figured since this is a game, and outcast is a fairly common word, why not make it a little different while still having the same meaning...

Subconsciously you were honoring OutKast

Ah, good point. But you get the point hopefully, we haven't had many characters that have been using close-range "magic", instead of combat skills. The assassin is about the only one I can think of thus far.
True, the druid was a pretty good hybrid of the 2. But I think the OP was going more towards a caster that uses close range magic and combat skills, not a caster who can decide between long range or short range spells.
Heh, thank you SO much for changing the name. Finally the english language is no longer being bastardized... In this thread atleast.

Dunno if you'd need to create a specific class for this, won't the Wizard be able to?
Maybe i'd just like it more if it was spelled "Ootcast".
What in the hell is "Ootcast" ???
After looking at the skill trees, it looks like they have some more shortrange and melee based skills for the wizard, but - she is still limited to only mage style armor... and the base of her skills are almost all long range magic based attacks.. so you couldn't exactly run into a mob and start knocking heads off with a sword without dieing very quickly...

"hey bud have you tried magic?" -- "no... sounds kinda gay...."
lets see what happens when we put a "k" rather than a lame "c":
"hey man have you tried magik?" -- "whoah, what is that!!!???"
see my point? This concludes our lesson on proper child abduction. Good Day.
Serious question: are you high?

Siaynoq's Playthroughs
I was going to say... as long as there is a skill called "Bombs over Baghdad."... but you've ruined my fun now..
;P
The fury globes could just glow from behind the pool of mana.
