I find it unlikely that nobody has come across this and speculated on what it means before, but each time I have beaten a difficulty, I can't help but wonder what sort of hint this could be!
This last time of clearing nightmare difficulty, I decided to take some snapshots and stitch them together to have one nice and clean photo to ponder at. In case somebody doesn't know what I'm talking about, I'm talking about what the enchantress says at the end of the game, right after slaying Diablo, when all that is left to do is talk to the angel (her name escapes me) and roll the credits. Here it is, specifically:
A document, huh? That's older than the Enchantress herself (which is pretty old, since she came from the far, far past thanks to Tyrael), and she can't begin to comprehend what it is.
And why is the document so important that an angel try giving it to her at its moment of death?
This is clearly a hint at what is to come.
What say you, diablofans? What's up with this being at the end for no apparent reason other than possibly being a hint at future content?
Sounds indeed like the next saga in this classical and high quality story. Or Jay Wilson's resignation letter
Has to be fun being the public face of a dev team eh?
I bet Greg Street (Ghostcrawler) is giving Jay Wilson some tips since he has like 4 years of everyone blaming everything on him by now.
And everyone, EVERYONE hated Tom Chilton with a passion. Then he stopped being the public face (gave that job to Greg), and nobody ever say anything about him anymore, yet he's still game director. But no one gives a damn. Because he's not the public face.
There are some very interesting conversations that I hope expansions follow up on... the dark gem that Covetous Shen is searching for, the Prophet, Leah's soul (Covetous Shen specifically mentions he doesn't think it's destroyed, and he makes it pretty clear he's seen a lot more than we have), the Templar's corrupted order, etc. The most interesting stories and writing in the game are all scattered along the side, not in the main plot itself, I think.
i think you mean thanks to Inarius. he was the prophet, not Tyrael. Besides not sure how many expansions there will be or how the follower stories progress if they do at all, however a more likely expansion plot lines involve Adria or Imperius deciding that the nephalem are too dangerous and need to be killed.
1.) Adria's still alive and kicking and a servant of Diablo.
2.) a member of the Angiris council went batshit crazy and has been wandering the world for years. No one knows his whereabouts.
3.) Duriel and Andariel have yet to have their soulstones smashed (as far as we know).
4.) Covetous Shen is constantly talking about some great demon housed in this wondrous gem he's seeking.
5.) Covetous Shen may or may not be a god or godlike being, depending on how seriously one takes his ramblings.
6.) The Templar, Scoundrel and Enchantress all tell stories that could be expanded upon in quests in an expansion (Templar's order, Scoundrel's brother and the thieves' guild, Enchantress' angelic meeting, etc.)
7.) Imperius still wants to get down with human extermination.
So, as you can see, there are myriad directions things could go, with Adria OBVIOUSLY being part of the first expansion.
The missing Angiris council member? That would be Malthael, former aspect of Wisdom.
He's pretty much an enigma. It will be interesting to see what they have planned for him. Personally, I have him coming back as the Aspect of Death and siding with Imperius against the nephalem.
Tyrael:Long ago, when Inarius and his ilk stole the Worldstone to create Sanctuary, Malthael became consumed with discovering its whereabouts.
As the archangel of Wisdom, he was tortured by his inability to recover the sacred artifact. Player:
Where is he now? Tyrael:
Some say he haunts the silent halls of Pandemonium, forever seeking answers to the unknowable mysteries of life and death.
The Enchantress' Prophet is likely Inarius, but I don't think there was ever confirmation of such.
You know, I wrote somepostsabout where the expansions might be headed. I think I overlooked or dismissed this Enchantress bit, lemme look that up.
Enchantress Eirena:
I spoke to Itherael, and he helped me translate the document. It was written by an angel who saw promise in humanity...
He began to teach a group of young women who had killed the daemons their masters summoned... Player:
You and your sisters? Enchantress Eirena:
None other. The Prophet I have followed for so many years... He was an angel! Player:
That is why you knew Tyrael was an angel. Enchantress Eirena:
Yes... but I do not know whether the Prophet was the dying angel I met or not. The writings say that he worked in absolute secrecy. Itherael knew nothing of them. Player:
Then you must find a new path through the world without him. Enchantress Eirena:
You are right. And I hope that path will still be with you, my friend,
Okay, maybe not, as they apparently translated it already. I was thinking it may have been given to her so she could fully decipher the End of Days prophecy, but I guess not. (Been a while since I've dabbled in Diablo lore )
I don't really know what role Eirena will play in the future story (I think there's a chance some of her sisters lived, I don't think she checked them all?), but suffice it to say we should be seeing angels and demons fighting on Sanctuary, likely starting with the end cinematic for X1.

Non nobis, Domine, non nobis sed nomini tuo da gloriam.
CE Blu-Ray interview has a rather explicit thing regarding the rescue of Leah's soul and chasing Adria
Does it? I have the damn thing and never made time to watch it. Now I have to.
I have a feeling this next expansion will be us finding the Black Soulstone and entering it to pull Leah's soul back out of it and at least let her rest in peace. Being trapped in an endless void with the combined seven lords of hell hardly seems like a friendly bonfire with a cooler full of beers. Also we kill Adria because her betrayal was broadcast from a thousand miles away and poorly acted(read also: written) when it happened.
Assuming each expansion only adds 1 act(hoping it's more, cross your fingers), I would think the second one will deal with Malthael and at some level Imperius. Tathamet gets left to Diablo 4 and beyond, although as much as I love the series I wish they would end it before the story jumps the shark even further and we all become completely disillusioned with Diablo being reduced to a 'villain of the week' role.
Yeah what about "the jewel" that shen keeps braging all game long?
The jewel would be the black soulstone. For all of those who don't know it the black soulstone is what should ultimatley ressurect Tathamet which is all 7 evils combined in one soulstone. "The prime evil" isn't diablo its Tathamet they accidentally fucked up part of the story with that. I believe Adria will find the soulstone and place into tathamets carcass before we kill her whihc will leave the next game open for killing tathamet.

Not even Death will save you from Diablo Bunny's Cuteness!
Most definitely an interesting thought. I don't know that it will end up translating to anything because it is a small bit of dialogue tucked away at the end of the game but if it does you'll look like a genius and I'll look like a fool.

I don't actually think so. The prime aspects of good and evil has shattered and I do not think they can be made whole again (the aspect of good, that dragon, he became the silver spire).
But apart from that, diablo embed the black soulstone into his flesh (or Adria actually did it to Leah). Then you (yeah, you) destroyed Diablo and thus the Black Soulstone. Or so I assume. There is no reference to you destroying it but none is there any reference to it being still in once piece.... And the Prime Evil was indeed Diablo for a moment, as he had all evils combined within himself, thus making him the prime evil.
And a small little detail; Shen (I do so love that character) is talking about a demon called Dirgest possessing the gem is he looking for

I wouldn't know where you'd have to go, but I'm pretty sure Blizzard personnel have come forth and explicitly clarified that the BS is still intact. (You can see it falling through the clouds or whatever if you look close) Just put in my CE Behind the Scenes DVD, here is the Storyboard showing the soulstone is definitely still in one piece after Diablo disintegrated.
"But the Black Soulstone is flawed and cannot contain that many demons for long. We must capture Azmodan within it and shatter it... lest all these Evils be reborn."
Yep.
As for Tathamet coming back, remember that this game was codenamed 'Project Hydra.'

Non nobis, Domine, non nobis sed nomini tuo da gloriam.
The writing for Diablo III was pathetic, but if the black soulstone just "happened to go overlooked as it was kicked through the gutters of heaven by many a sandal-clad foot," that would be the biggest load of horseshit known to writing. That's like a preemptive deus ex machina coupled with a spell of multi-dimensional global amnesia.
At least one of the expansions should center around Imperius going rogue and waging a war of extermination on anyone with the slightest hint of Nephilim blood. Your character could travel to the origin places of all the characters from D2 and D3, both protecting and avenging those who would fall within harm's way. Imperius could use his powers to summon other creatures of heaven, but twisted to his own ends. It would be like starting the game series over with heaven as the enemy and no convoluted and implausible retconning.
