I was just wandering guys and please pardon my ignorance but I have unfortunately not gotten around to reading the books yet, but is the "Burning Hells" a group of some sort? or is just ment to be taken literally, as just a description of hell in that it is burning?

For anyone who thinks the sword isn't "upturned"...
Think about it, the natural way you wield a sword is like this:
So if you upturn it it would be with the hilt on top.
It's tricky wording.
Nothing personal to you Daemaro, but that just doesn't look like an "upturned" sword to me. Yes, I read your thing about it being tricky wording. Even beyond that, it doesn't even resemble a sword to me, more like a cross.
So I did some research.. I google searched "define: upturn" as well as upturned, upturn sword, and upturned sword; nothing was of relevance. Next, I googled "What is an upturned sword" and on the first 2 pages of results, I got all this...
This could be taken as earlier said that the sword would be horizontal with blade turned up, or as vertical with the point of the blade in the air; as I don't think hurdling sword hilts is that breathtaking or dangerous.
--VIDEO--
This last quote also enforces the sword laying horizontal with blade turned up.
So there you have it, quotes from the first two pages of a google search "what is an upturned sword." I should also mention that there were no results saying that an upturned sword could be vertical with hilt in the air.
In any case, think what you want Daemaro, I'm not convinced.
Oh wow, ok lol...man I have played both D1 and D2 completely through and never caught that. I'll be sure to pay attention to detail this 3rd time around.

That's fine. Good finds on all that. But the wording still doesn't convince me completely.
I mean all the pages of replies and number of views and you're the only person to bring this up adamantly. Which is not bad, but it also leads me to believe that the majority of people have no clue what a upturned sword is. This could include Blizzard or Richard Knaak the author of the books.
The way he described it in the book he could of meant for it to be facing hilt down, but Blizzard designed it hilt up to look better.
You also can't really say it doesn't look like a sword, what do you expect a blazing sword to look like? It wouldn't have much detail. It's ablaze.
Knaak also couldn't reference a cross in the book, people would associate it with Christianity, which is not what he wants. He wants references to it, he doesn't want blatant symbolism.
If he had said Imperius had a blazing cross on his chest people could of took it multiple ways.
I think the council may consider him a agent of chaos because he potentially is creating chaos when he destroyed the worldstone and went against their rules.
I don't think he'll end up working for the burning hells though.
Oh, I kind of misread your initial post about this- you're saying that the Angiris Council would consider him a minion of Chaos, not that he'd actually be one in reality. I think that's what you're saying, right?
but it also leads me to believe that the majority of people have no clue what a upturned sword is. This could include Blizzard or Richard Knaak the author of the books.
This could be very true. I didn't mention it but I did some google image searches as well for upturned swords and no position of a sword came up frequently enough to effectively make a decision.
Maybe no one knows what an upturned sword really is.
I think it depends on what you define the "sword" as- is it a hilt and blade or blade and hilt? It can't function without either- without the hilt you'd cut yourself, and without the blade you couldn't stab someone.
http://www.thefreedictionary.com/upturned this is the definition of upturned...the symbol or "sword" on that angels chest is being directed downward...not upturned.

Then I'd agree with you.
Yeah that's what I meant.

That also depends on how you view a sword in it's natural state. Is it supposed to be hilt down while holding it, or hilt up while in the scabbard?
yea it is very confusing...it seems like it could go either way.....I have an idea. But don't shoot me down...maybe If someone from Diablo Fans could get a confirmation from the author on exactly what he ment by upturned or how he envisioned it...that would put this whole thing to rest...in fact Daemaro....who wrote that part about Imperius??? which author was it?

That doesn't say anything about swords, though. We still need a definition of what the "top" and "bottom" is of the sword.
Ok guys I did something either smart or stupid. I wrote Knaak an e-mail to try and finally find out what he ment by upturned. Hopefully he will get back to me soon.

I hope he replies, but he may not be able to. It could reveal too much of the plot of D3 depending.
I was thinking the same thing, but at the same time I am just asking for a better clarification on the description of how Imperius' looks...so hopefully he replies.

So what exactly did you ask? Because you might be able to fool him into telling you, or he may tell you whats in the book, or he may realize and not reply at all.

This is what I wrote...Hello Mr. Knaak, I am a member of www.diablofans.com...recently there has been a huge discussion having to do with what exactly you ment when you described Imperius' upturned sword on his chest. I am writing to you to try to get to the bottom of how the sword should be shown on his chest. If the sword is upturned like you had wrote, should blade be pointing towards Imperius' head or should it be pointing towards his legs? Please get back to me on this there is a huge thread on this topic and I want to lay it to rest. thanks!......I never mentioned Diablo 3 but we will see.
THIS IS MY BOOMSTICK!
It's just what Hell is referred to in Diablo.
Heaven is usually "The High Heavens"
Hell is usually "The Burning Hells"

This would suggest that an upturned sword would be lying horizontal with the blade turned up so that one could sit on it.
This could be taken as earlier said that the sword would be horizontal with blade turned up, or as vertical with the point of the blade in the air; as I don't think hurdling sword hilts is that breathtaking or dangerous.
This IMO further enforces the sword horizontally with blade side up. To argue, a sword hilt could hardly split a scarf in half by its own weight.

Knaak I believe.
I'm not too book savvy.

Though I think we'd of been a lot more inclined to get an answer about 4 months ago before D3 was announced.
We'll have to see.
