I pondered a few interesting things about the world of sanctuary and our own world of earth.
I don't wish to offend anyone with my statements, More so I'm taking a few elements from religion.
Here's a few things that came up in my mind..
What if in the diablo universe, Sanctuary is the primal state of Earth?
Take this very lightly, But think of Christianity. Satan = Diablo, and I guess "God" = Crystal Arch perhaps? Or maybe just the idea of good, or "Angels".
As I said again, take it lightly. As it is simply the idea of GOOD vs BAD, Holy vs Evil. Etc.
Now if in earths christian history, Satan wished to overthrow god, he was defeated and cast down to hell, Which now we have the forces of hell vs heaven.
In Sanctuary, we have all that betrayal trashed and it's simply demons vs angels. More so for a deeper plot and to not alienate anyone's beliefs on blizzards part.
MY THEORY:
Sanctuary is the primordial state of earth, I believe that the eventual conclusion from the conflict of heaven vs hell will result in the forces of heaven either disappearing, turning into humans, or dying.
I believe that the forces of hell will be "completely" wiped out, or so we think.
This will leave only the nephilim. I believe that over time they will slowly lose all of their magical properties, much as the world stone was intended to do, and we will become humans of now.
I think that we believe hell and heaven will be erased throughout time, but the "essence" of good and evil will still linger on, meaning that diablo will NEVER die as long as the concept of evil exists. As will the same for angels.
This is probably due to LAZINESS but I will also state that the world of sanctuary's moon is the same as earths moon.
The moon parts funny, probably just a laziness thing on Blizzards part lol. As far as your theory, I see where you're coming from, but I just don't think Blizzard would make one of it's universes a symbol for ours, it's just not that much fun as gaming goes. But who knows, maybe =D
i think that is uncertain. Your theory is a little confusing if you want to say that on LORE terms. Like Sexton said, Diablo Lore is closer to TES universe. Anu and Tathamet are beings of a monomyth, not someone like an omniponent god. Even the angels of Diablo universe looks stronger than the christian god.
I would say that Tathamet had powers to destroy galaxies with a punch, but since he died, his essence, in this case the great evils and prime evils, would be a small essence of it's power.
No being on Diablo franchise reminds me of a omniponent god. They are just incredible powerfull. And at least Blizzard could gave us messages about the world of Diablo being milions of years before the actual time. So since there's none. I would say no.
I know tethamet and Anu were in an eternal struggle and killed eachother blah blah good and evil, But that's all pretty much pointless to have in a theory if neither of those beings are no longer an opposing force, they "no longer exist" in a sense. So what's the point of mentioning them as god and satan if, before any sanctuary, angels, or demons existed when they did.
What I was basically saying in short is...
If Diablo is to Satan (Ruling hell)
Angels(Angiris Council) is to god (ruling heaven)
Nephilim are to humans (both aspects of good and evil)
Perhaps they are the precursor to our existence.
Before you run to conclusions and being an ass at least take other peoples possible knowledge into consideration..
Otherwise you just seem as ignorant as they MIGHT be.
If you can't express your opinion without insulting someone don't post. This applies to everyone.
Sanctuary is not earth. It's Sanctuary. This is a universe created by this game company that reflects our own reality. The entire game, and in fact most every game is filled with references from the real world. That does not make those places earth any more than this does.

Yes, well, obviously it's not Earth. But it also is somewhat representative of Earth. There really is no point in analyzing the presence of our moon in the sky of Sanctuary. I think they were mere aesthetic choices and sometimes while designers wish to create a totally alien environment, they may also wish to include enough of the familiar as well.
It's just like, you have these mortals on Sanctuary that basically seem human. We don't really need to wonder if they are aliens or not since it may be another planet. I think it's best to merely think of it as a parallel reality...a place that could exist and bear similarities with our own world.

Maybe it's a parallel universe, where everything is in contradiction to ours, like a mirror image of our universe. Up is down, east is west, demons are humans, humans are demons.
The following is just a thought, it's not said to entice a debate about religion or anything in that sense: One could say that instead of the Second Coming of Jesus in our universe, it may be the, well not the Second Coming of Diablo, but the coming of Diablo to earth in the parallel universe.
"He [Jesus] will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. ... We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen."
- Where Jesus will come on a fluffy cloud, Diablo will come on a fiery meteor (don't know whether this is true or not).
- Where Jesus will come to "judge the living and the dead" after the "resurrection of the dead", Diablo will come to leave destruction and death in his path.
- Where Jesus's "kingdom will have no end", Diablo's "kingdom will have no end" (hell).
- The " "world to come" is an phrase reflecting the belief that the "current world" is flawed or cursed and will be replaced in the future by a better world." (wikipedia). Instead, the world after Diablo came, will be replaced by a worst world: demons of hell on earth.
Yeah, don't really know how and why I came up with this...

So except for the MOON, I'd say its an parallell universe or, logically; made up.
