I haven't really played Diablo 3 for a few weeks or so, but when I got back on, my fps dropped to an average of 20. Before I could play it with a smooth 60+ fps with everything maxed out. However, now no matter what I do to the graphics settings, my fps remains at an average of 20.
I can play all other games on max with 60+ fps, I am playing Darksiders 2 atm. However, I was able to play Skyrim on Ultra settings with a decent 60+ fps, but now I can't even play it on high without the game crashing, coming up with a video card error saying that is stopped working and has just started again.
Anyways, my system is:
OS: Windows 7 Ultimate
Processor: AMD Phenom II x4 955 Processor (4 CPUs), 3.2GHz
Memory: 8gig ram
Graphics Card: AMD Radeon HD 6850, 752MB
However, I just realized that my graphics card current display mode is set to 1920 x 1080 (32bit) (60hz). My OS is 64bit, could this be causing a problem? If so, why does Darksiders 2 run perfectly fine?
The 32 bits at the resolution is about the color pallete, not related to your processor at all...
Old days it would make difference playing 16 bits or 32 bits in performance, not anymore.
But D3 is a bugged game, I had to restore my laptop to factory settings because I couldn't play D3 anymore, so there it is: it started to lag with basically no reason at all and after reinstalling my Windows I didn't even care to reinstall Diablo, just copied its folder from pendrive and it was working as good as new.
Basically, that's the answer.
Blizz told us a while ago that they know there are issues with some HW config and that they had run an internal test and plan to fix this in a future patch (soontm.....).
You can try to delete the folder "Bnet" (better to cut it and move it on another folder) and restart the game to create a new one (sometimes this works) or you can try to reinstall DirectX.
Also since 1.05 reset some of your preferences check that everything is as you want it to be.
And check your video card config for D3, they sometimes got messed up for unknown reason (also check your drivers are up to date and you may consider uninstalling the driver and make a "clean" installation afterwards.)
Hope it helps and wish you luck.

Go figure it out.
