Paragon 2.0 begs for Ladder System to be implemented , I don't think they implemented Paragon 2.0 without thinking about ladders.
Some players or even any player that played D2 on battle.net knows what are ladders and knows that any loot game requires it , even though it was mentioned in one of the replies that it goes against the whole system of loot and accumulation but remember if you are casual and like to play slowly and at your own pace and you feel that the time even if it is little too valuable then Ladders are not for you and you have an option to play non ladder but on the other side of the spectrum there are the hardcore players(non casuals) who get bored after achieving everything the game has to offer because we reached the maximum height not because the game is boring , we still enjoy the game but there are no more goals to look forward to and achieve.
We want a way to reset our progress without having to buy the game again , I even at one point started playing on Americas just to have a fresh start because I had 10 characters on Euro and they were all 60s and had gear on them and my Blacksmith and Jeweler and Stash were all unlocked and I had loads of gold that I can't get rid off from one of the characters but keep it on my main , Ladders will offer this option.
Again , Ladders are optional , you don't have to play them if you don't feel like it and btw Ladders on D2 still bring players back after so many years , every season reset many players (me included) go back to D2 for another spin , starting fresh with everybody in clean economy and race to the top or just enjoy the fresh start where everything is challenging , specially on hardcore. Go check D2 forums few weeks before the ladder reset , you will see all kind of posts from players that are coming back and looking for groups , forming a new group the moment the servers come back up from ladder reset and progressing together with nothing is just amazing , the fear because everything is hard and there is nothing to make it easier except playing better.
I like your ideas Vomica, i definitely would go along with those. I do believe we will eventually need a ladder or challenge type system. But instead of a D2 like system something different along those lines you mentioned would be perfect IMO.
As far a paragon 2.0 begging for ladder... i'm not so sure that was the main intent. One of the major points about paragon 2.0 is that your progress can never end since there is no max level. Instead of reaching level 100 and being "done" there will always be another level up to strive for. So you could play forever with no reset and never really be "done".
And if they did have weekly / monthly challenges/races that would help keep things interesting, even for the people that do manage to get to paragon 10000000 or whatever.
Well..The most important aspect of a ladder in a game that is all about loot, is to reset the economy at frequent intervalls. My personal wish for a ladder was due to the fact that the auction house inflation had reached a level that was unbearable and plain silly.
With the removal of the auction house, it'll still balance the economy by reseting it every few months, it'll also create a competative aspect to a game that is mostly played solo. Ladders in diablo 2 introduced unique items and runewords to encourage people to participate, they could easily do that in diablo 3 aswell (recipies instead of runewords). I hope they introduce ladders, and i hope non-ladder game will be more forgiving on the BOA aspect they're introducing. (whyy..whyyy do that...the removal of the ah was enough...blaah).
