I sell everything that's not lvl60 unless it's rare with really good rolls. What do you do with inferno items though? sell for the essence/tears? I've found that the actual sell value is generally better. I only have 2-3 blacksmith recipes that have 5 properties and I don't have a lot of gold...so I haven't been crafting.
What do you do? what should I do? (I like to pick up everything hehe)
Look at the unit price of what you get from selling the crafting materials on the AH -15%. If that is more than what you can sell an item for, then do it. There will be a specific vendor price that makes salvaging the better option (say, 700 gold)
However, I suspect the margins would be so small (and the added time of Auction Housing) that it would be more beneficial just to instasell everything, and spend those extra few on the auction house killing a few more monsters and getting some added gold drops.
Just to give you some idea of what at least one other player does, here's my usual salvage/sell techniques. On a quick run, I mostly just pick up ilvl 61+ items only; both blues and yellows. I generally check what the exquisite essences are selling for and use that as a gauge. If they're selling below 700, I vendor all 61+ blues without regard to price. I used to go through and check the vendor price for each piece, but at this point I'll just look at the price point of the essences to decide if they all get salvaged or sold. For instance, just before and after 1.0.4, essences were in the 1300 range, so it was a no brainer to salvage all blues and some yellows. But now the prices are in the 750-850 range, so I just assume that all the blues when added together would make it about a wash so I sell the trash and move on.
I think 900 per essence on the AH is about when I would switch to salvaging blues. Of course, if you want to hoard them and wait for the price to go up, that is a viable gamble. I'd wager that 1.0.5 and 1.1 would see pretty good price bumps for a short while.
Ilvl61+ yellows that aren't worth listing on the AH, straight sold to the vendor. The yellow crafting mat is so worthless and the chance for a Fiery Brimstone is too low for my tastes, so yellows go straight to the vendor with complete disregard as to price/mat conversions.
Life is short. Time is money friend. Don't over-think it. Get a general idea of how you want to approach it and go from there.
For ilvl61+ blue/magic items if they are worth under 700g I salvage them. If they are worth more I sell them to the vendor. Mats I get from salvaging are put on the AH as I don't craft anything myself.
All ilvl 61+ rares that are ordinary rolls are sold to the vendor as well. I rarely savage them as they are generally worth 1k+ vendor price. I also like to pick up everything
As an addendum, when you reach the point where your next reasonable upgrades are going to cost you millions, it's probably not even worth touching blues. Once you're looking for big-ticket items, messing around with blues will just slow you down.
* follow items don't go above ilevel 60, and ilevel60 follower items salvage into the exquisite essences
* ilevel 60 rings and amulets also salvage into exquisite essences
* its better to vendor any irridescent tears you get than to see them on the AH. Alternatively you can save up as many of them as you get in hopes that some day blizzard does something to raise the demand or lower the supply

This is true for the most part but it's not really about how much your upgrades will cost, but rather how fast you farm and how much MF/GF you have. If you're near max MF/GF and can clear a3 in about an hour (just as a measurement of farm speed, a full run isn't as efficient as partial clearing dense areas) then it's not even worth the time to pick up anything except rare ilvl63's, any rare amulet/ring, and class specific rare 62's.
The reason for this is that picking up all those blues and crappy ilvl rares fills your bags so fast that you waste half your time vendoring/salvaging/ID'ing and even the time just to pick it up is considerable, but you could be making just as much gold from killing during that time while also getting more chances for higher ilvl rares and legendaries.
