I agree, it's going to be more about finding the plans for stuff at end game then it is going to be about leveling him up, pages and even mats themselves will be plentiful in the AH's, so even if you have to slowly buy pages to supliment the drops your getting it won't be too bad, but the plans will probably go straight to the RMAH at least for a while, or be really expensive to buy with Gold.
I like this, I was a bit worried as well that it was going to be too easy to level him, this takes care of that, at least in a way. The jeweler is interesting though, that's a lot of pages, but someone mentioned that it's not by increments which was true last I checked so that makes sense.

Aren't crafted items going to be the best items in the game?
Kind of makes sence if that is the case.
My understanding was that the "crafted" items will LIKELY be about one or two steps behind the top tier legendary items, but occasionally (in D2) a really exceptional rare would turn out better than any unique or Runeword. (Biggest difference from D2 to D3 would be the skills and +skill levels which wouldn't appear in the rares, but did on the specific items).
Since there will be no +skill items, I'd expect a decent amount of elite crafted items to be on par with the best legendary items in the game.
(Although since we don't even have an idea of what ANY of the legendary / set items are yet, or the type of attributes that can exist on crafted items....it's all just speculation anyway).
It boggles my mind that some of the people on this forum are complaining or surprised about this. Did you really think it would be that easy? That a source of such incredible gear would just be handed to you?

I hope it's an achievement to have a maxed out blacksmith and not just a thing that everyone has. I have a feeling it'll be easy enough that everyone at max level will have him maxed out. We'll see how rare the pages are though.

Kind of like this since it seemed too easy to max the black smith out initially, especially since you can craft legendary items and sets. This would give most players a reason to keep playing as well and it would feel more rewarding in the end.
Hopefully the items will be worth the hard grinding work.
Considering that crafting is likely to have the strongest gear in the game (perfectly rolled 6 slot random attribute rare), I don't find it surprising that this will be quite a grind.
Its all going to be about who knows the plans. I can see right now, assuming they are as rare as I think they will be, those +6 affix inferno plans will be the kind of things that make their ownsers super popular. You log in and instantly get like 50 msgs saying "hey can you craft me some legs!D?"

The point I was making was that even after you get him to max level you still don't just get shit handed to you. It could very well take a long time just to get the recipe. Then it takes even more time/money to just craft one of the items, and I am willing to bet you won't get good stats easily. Actually I don't need to bet, because I know from personal experience on beta. They intentionally make good affixes more rare, and with more affixes the probability of getting good stats on them all becomes quite bad.
At this point it seems like they are trying to make these items as hard to acquire as rank14 gems or something.

I actually enjoy the grind. It makes me feel good to chip away at it a little by little everyday. If you finished everything in a few hours, what would be the point.
I am seriously thinking that its not going to be worth leveling up the BS to max anymore. It seems it would be more beneficial to simply sell the crafted materials and buy the item you want.

This is a GOOD thing. First of all it gives gold value. Which is something we desperately need in D3 to avoid it becoming another FG fiasco.
Secondly tome pages and rare recipes are drops. More than a few people complained taking out Rune drops gave us less to hunt for...well now we have these two things. The fact that pages and such are drops also makes them valuable in the Auction House. Further giving a use for gold.
Color me excited by this news. The crafting system has me pretty excited.
