If there was constant fighting, no gaps between monsters, AoE would be too effective.
If there was little groups/squads it's just like everything else, except you have people helping you. Useless, OP or tanks, they still don't make it fun.
Taking out so many enemies by yourself is fun, but I like a break in between.
@ bulif
i was only saying that if this was to be implemented in game. it would only happen once. if it did more than once. then it would end up being repetitive.
With a game like Diablo, what you would really need to fulfill this idea of fighting an armor, would be you and your friends in game(so 4 people), fighting of a hoard of mobs.
I think what your trying to say by using the word 'army' is a big orgaized group of monsters, and captain monsters, etc...
So it would be the 4 heroes, rushing towards a boss fight, but have to stop and fight off 3-5 groups of, say, 20-30 mobs, including a few blue name(captains), and a unique(commander), a few times, before the last fight. So, like baal in act 5, but in one big rush, not fight, wait, fight, wait etc...(and more than just 10 at a time)

In one of the videos werent monsters fighting each other? i think it was goatmen and skeletons, maybe something like that on a larger scale could happen (i might be confusing it with something else)

Berserking is a term I invented while playing Heretic, so, yes, it's berserking. I think I know what my own term means.
Berserking = your enemies fighting each other because the game designer said so.
Point is, unlike battles, berserking is not a scripted event but a possible event that will happen once in a while between enemies under some rules maybe. So it doesn't fit under necronergal's description.
I believe DI's Berserk was renamed to something else in DII anyway.
I wouldn't mind having a side quest in which you defend a small town or castle from being over-run by enemy forces, and if you don't go and do it then when you go there it would be like Tristram in D2.
No, that is a horrible idea...Get out! THE DOOR IS DOWN THE HALL TO THE LEFT!!! ------->

Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then he is not omnipotent. Is he able, but not willing? Then he is malevolent. Is he both able, and willing? Then whence cometh evil? Is he neither able nor willing? Then why call him God. -Epicurus-Athiests- Winning since 33 A.D
If there are tons of NPC's fighting each other and you don't really matter, that's a cutscene.
What? No it isn't. A cut scene is a part of a game where you have no control over your character. Period. It has nothing to do with your characters value or interaction with his surroundings.
If you have control of your character, you're not in a cut scene.
Something similar was in Diablo 2 in Act 5. It worked just fine.

Mechanics are not important because every encounter is measured in terms of gameplay value. If you can't participate, it means it was put up as a show for you using the in-game engine, which is a cutscene.
I really don't see what having or not having the control of your character has to do with it. If they lock up your char in a small area but permit you to move him around while showing you some stuff, it doesn't cease to be a cutscene just because I am able to move my char between 4 walls.
I see things as gameplay elements first, mechanical terms later.

True. But also true if you look at it from his angle.
I can't believe you're (both of you) fighting over the basic rules of what a cutscene is.
You are both correct.

Point remains though: The huge army wars concept is not supposed to be something where you sit back and watch little green men swing at little red men for TEN MINUTES.
Factors to pull it off would be : timeframe, immersion of player (as in whether you will be able to inflict changes in the outcome), whether you can actually participy in the event (or just spectate), and execution/idea (how it's being portrayed on the screen).

The Barbarian is from Arreat, a very cold snowy mountain top, but they are much tougher than normal humans, so they don't need warmth.

Where are Barbarians originally from? Sumeria, or more specifically Mesopotamia, AKA Europe. Think the Alps and the Pyrenees

This is exactly what I was thinking lol.
I kinda like the idea of you by yourself slaying Diablo, it makes the fight epic (As does a giant war)
but imagine one great warrior against a prime evil clashing.
Both rather good ideas just depends how they are implimented....
