playing diablo 2 with my summon necro. trying to kill diablo (failed misurably cause im on single player ) i had a thought about armys and ars in diablo 3.
if some people read the sin wars. and i dont think this is a spoiler cause well. war, army alot of people fighting at one. so what if in diablo 3. probably not random but probably an epic battle. with not only the characters in the game. but maybe several npc classes in the mix. along with a couple 100 people. (might be to many maybe 20) versus a slightly higher size army then yours demons and buring hell.
i think this would be an awsome idea for diablo 3. 2 armys, maybe 3!!, in a giant epic battle to kill the other armys.
what do you guys think of this idea.
a problem i see is a computer running all this massive fighting. but other then that....EPIC!!!!
im sorry. i actually shouldve explained my idea a little better. (i do that alot)
so im thinking. near the end of the game. maybe before you face the last boss or the greatest evil or something. theres a huge wide open area. maybe some trees and some rivers. and theres an army of demons to get to the final boss. i dont know how many. but ALOT!!!. (try and picure the cinematic trailer with that huge army. where they are semi organized and not just running around wondering what to kill)
you are on the other end. lets say barbarian. decked out in full gear. leading another army. now lets say your in single player. so its just you playing. and since this is an army of the burning hell.
(i have no idea how you would get this stuff. maybe you find out about this army or something) but you have your own army. not just human soldiers. but several other characters. (some wizards, barbarians, witch doctors, 2 unannounced classes, then the rest soldiers and archers, maybe bring back some d2 classes!!) you wouldnt get alot of the classes. (wizards, witchdocter, etc.) but it would be an army none the less. and you end up fighting this huge army.
now this is just you playing. so as you see a monster you are trying to kill. you see npc's attacking other monsters.
i dont know. i just feel we need an freaking epic war in diablo 3. plus. it would be awsome. lol.
**instead of the woodys area. maybe going and having a siege to hell. like river of flames or something**
Until you start capitalizing your sentences, I'll just say you're lazy.
If there are tons of NPC's fighting each other and you don't really matter, that's a cutscene.
If there are tons of NPC's fighting and you do matter, that's a game called Dynasty Warriors. I just don't understand why we need that in Diablo III, especially in an important place like a boss fight. Diablo is a solo or party game but not really a mass game.

Um...it wouldn't be NPC's fighting other NPC's. It would be a group of you leading NPC's fighting a bunch of monsters. (are monsters considered NPC's?)
I'm not saying its going to happen all the time. Im just saying once during the game. One huge battle. If there was more then one, i guess you would called it Dynasty Warriors. (AND AGIAN. I HAVE NEVER SEEN OR PLAYED DYNASTY WARRIORS)
I am not saying we need it. (now that i think of it i think i did. my bad) But i am just saying that it would be pretty neat to have one.

By leading you mean there would be your char somewhere and there would be a bunch of NPC following your char, breaking away, going to kill some monsters, getting stuck, getting themselves killed in stupid ways, standing still doing nothing while a monster hits them, etc...
And, yes, monsters are NPC's. So, it would be NPC vs NPC and you are somewhere in the middle of it all. This is the core gameplay of Dynasty Warriors.

Well, can you say why? We sort of had this in Act V, and I didn't really like it.
"kinda neat" is not a reason.

That doesn't change the fact that it's a gameplay element Diablo, in my opinion, does not need.
Okay so basically what your saying is that its to much like Dynasty Warriors, and its not a Diablo style gameplay. So it shouldnt even be considered to be put into the game?
yes that is what he is saying some of these people have some obsession with keeping diablo exactly how it was in diablo2 and are afraid any change will ruin the game. You could make this an event that could be skipped only occurs in 1 act and isn't a big deal just fun for people interested.

Thing is, NPC on NPC battles are not really an easy thing to just take and stick into a game. I saw it in many games before, and unless it's Dynasty Warriors or another game that specializes in it, it usually sucks because it's not a core element of the game and it's not developed well. It just comes off cheesy instead of epic. Blizzard probably can make it less cheesy but meh.
NPC vs NPC has 3 versions:
- Your NPC's are so powerful that they kill all the monsters before you can do anything. E.g., a cutscene.
or
- all your NPC's quickly die (this was the case for Act V)
- all your NPC's have a humongous amount of health but deal almost no damage.
So, you're there to finish the job in either case. Question: what are all those NPC for? Just because they are. They serve no purpose besides to make a player be like "OMG, battle, cool" and I am not that kind of player, honestly.
I know I'm being criticisive but I'm trying to take the position of a developer and of a hardcore player who played many games and knows all these things by now. They're not what I want them to work on.

Yes, i see where you are going with the develpoer standpoint. It was just an idea i had and figured i would put it on a thread to give some discusion stuff to talk about.
Another way i thought about it. was (spoiler alert people********)....
In the Sin War, pretty much the end of the third book. You have a Epic battle, you could say. Which i think i heard something about how they were going to use stuff from the books to put into the game.
Another area of this is the cinimatic trailer. You have that huge army of demon people. so why cant you have an army to fight them?
But i do see what you mean about the NPC vs NPC thing.
Once agian, this was just an idea i had and figured i would make it a discusion to talk about.
Necronergal: I see what you're talking about, but like Equinox said, it would be difficult to implement a good "epic battle" and also as you pointed out, a lot of people's computers wouldn't be able to handle it well.

"A wizard is never late Frodo Baggins. Nor is he early.
He arrives precisely when he means to."
"Losers always whine about their best, winners go home and Fvck the prom queen."
a lot of people's computers wouldn't be able to handle it well.
It's not that the computers won't be able to handle it, it's more of the engine would have to be configured either for small battles or for big battles, not both at once, and running a big battle on an engine not used to big battles will be a problem.
A truly epic battle deserves a cinematic. I dunno about you, but watching a bunch of choppy 3D models fighting each other is not my idea of epic. Although, they may do it anyway. *cough* WC3 *cough*
In Resistance (this is an FPS on the PS3) they have these little skirmishes. You come, and a squad of soldiers follows you, and you all meet a bunch of aliens and everyone starts fighting. Your soldiers get in the way, they are immune to your fire, they completely ignore you unless you go forward, then they eventually die after killing maybe one alien, and you're alone against all the aliens, if you haven't killed them all by now. Then the soldiers respawn and it restarts. This is what I imagine would happen in your case. And when playing Resistance, I always felt those soldiers were nothing but an attempt at realism but it didn't work out well because they were so weak it's ridiculous, and making them even with the aliens would diminish the role of the player...
And, there is nothing wrong with having ideas like these. We have to discuss SOMETHING, lol

Thank you for the nothing wrong with ideas thing. thats the only reason i made a thread about it. and ya. i had a thought about making a 3d video or something of a battle. but i dont think that would be very exciting.
i think its a great idea, but so you no most monsters are not NPCs i dont think. NPC stands for non player charector, which usually means the person interacts with you to help, or something, or is important to the plot. i think only boss's qualify.
Equinox is right when says it's crucial to create the right circumstances for such a battle to occur. Both 'mercenaries' and enemies should posses the correct type of traits, and it is important that the player is not a bystander.
My opinion is that the right way to go about it is like in the beginning level/s of Act 5.
Continually forcing the player to charge forward at the enemy (so as to not feel as there are only a few pockets of battle), whilst singular or smaller-group battles are fought between npcs & enemies. It really differentiates from the whole 'dungeon creeping' you do in all the other levels.
I really don't want to watch at 20 soldiers smacking at 20 demons.
On the other hand, 20 fleeing soldiers being crushed by a war machine in a single sweep and demons pouring out of barricated gates is something I look forward to seeing.

lol it can still easily be a ranger since who said you cant shoot arrows at melee distance xD

The Barbarian is from Arreat, a very cold snowy mountain top, but they are much tougher than normal humans, so they don't need warmth.

Where are Barbarians originally from? Sumeria, or more specifically Mesopotamia, AKA Europe. Think the Alps and the Pyrenees
As much as I would love to watch clashing armies with me caught in the middle, I doubt that it will be in the game. It would take a lot of resources to produce that epic of a sequence. But I'm sure that Diablo III will have some epic moments, nonetheless.

i have never played dynasty warriors.
