I'd like to start a thread about what you'd like the Pally to be like.
One thing I'd like to see is the smite skill turn into a double attack: shield bash that stuns and then a swing with the weapon held in the right hand. This is much more "realistic" a use of the skill, since warriors in ancient and medieval times fought like this. They even had special bashing round things in the middle of the shield to aid in the bashing, and sometimes a spike in the middle.
I found the smite skill rather annoying to play with in D2 because I'd have to keep switching from smite to regular attack with my controls, and it just got annoying and not fun. I made one smiting pally that maxed out on the skill and got the best shields for it, but it's just not a great skill unless you can have the other arm's weapon included in the attack.
Well, what similar character will there be?
Is the only melee guy going to be the barbarian? What about a more "civilized" soldier/knight-type melee character? Even like the Amazon or something.
Well I think a pally version will return, but not until the expansion. Then again I am kinda hopeing for a more caster pally then a melee pally type of class. Maybe some sort of wayward bishop or something that has to do with chanting spells. Just something holy and more caster based.
id like to see some more area of effect spells. ALSO damn just had an awesome idea. it would be fucking sweet if there was this spell called "the blessing of heaven" and when casted you go down on one knee put your sword into the ground and look up at the sky and stay there for a second then get back up. and then because of this spell your chance to cause a critical strike is increased and chance to take less damage or not get hit at all is increased. when this happens an angel appears, just barely visible, and blocks you from that individual attack.
that would be cool, and the chance of them appearing however would naturally be random. and then each individual point we put into it would increase the chances of it happening.
Hammers are cool but they don't tie in with my idea of a warrior with a sword and shield as zeal and holy shield did...
I used to think the paladin shooting out spinning hammers in spirals form him didnt fit his class either. But i guess he needed some spell to cast and not be all melee or one BIG spell like FOH. Tho....i loved the paladin for foh and zeal.....and charge cuz it always scared the piss outta me with that sound effect in duels.
exactly he isnt simply a night he is a paladin, and he has holy powers at his dispense. i like the story behind the hammers i shall try to post it if i find it.
as i forgot about this thread i shall post it now "The Visions of Akarat tell of a hopeless battle. Legions of the undead had laid siege to a small convent of nuns who were the keepers of a sacred relic, the Hammer of Ghrab Thaar. Suspended over a fiery chasm within the convent, the sisters knew the Hammer to be a powerful vessel of the Light and vowed never to allow it to fall into the hands of evil. With no weapons of their own, and no one to defend them, the nuns sacrificed themselves to destroy the hammer. Rather than let the undead despoil the church and the relic, they took the hammer and plunged themselves into the fiery chasm. At that moment, a powerful force of Light washed over the undead legion, striking them down where they stood. Since that time a well-trained Paladin is able to tap the remnants of this released energy, whirling a magical hammer to strike down his adversaries, especially the forces of the walking dead."
I think Smite should totally go to Barb. It seems like a skill that depends on STR a lot, and on body complexion, + barb has shield specialization already and needs more shield skills...
It seems to me that Blizzard decided that the barbarian will have "SHIELD specialization" skill. So you're wrong already unless they change something.
A knight doesn't have to be on a horse any more than a barbarian has to be unarmored. I really don't get all this issue with people of character adaptation. You don't directly copy the real-life version when you use a name, that's boring... you change it and adapt it to your world.

or perhaps it would look like this, barely visible we get the outline of a large angel around our character http://intheirboots.com/images-solutions/Soldier-Angel.jpg
but really i get this image of a female angel coming down and being a shield. and then perhaps a warrior angel type looking character coming down doing the same act we are doing (swinging a sword) but just over top of us. sort of like this http://cache.gettyimages.com/xc/3431990.jpg?v=1&c=ViewImages&k=2&d=A6F75B5D5F9A091C5AB4EF606D08CD71A55A1E4F32AD3138
or perhaps something like this, and then out of the angels hand a shield would appear around us, sort of like the same effect of the protoss shield except more faded, and perhaps misty

and then perhaps he might have a teleport, and it would be the same effect as that other spell except this angel would appear http://www.allthingsbeautiful.com/all_things_beautiful/images/in_angels_hands.jpg
