One of the things we were promised in Diablo 2 was the existence of super rare items with godly powers, that would be so coveted and rare that no more than 1 would spawn in something like 2000 game worlds.
I remember drooling over the presence of such rare and godly items, and hoped that I would be able to find one...and if I was lucky, find one for each body part....
These turned out to be extremely common, and usually very weak so called "rare" items in Diablo 2 that nobody gives a crap about, unless you happen to get a very good combination...but even then, not as good as a unique because its too hard to describe the stats in a trade channel and nobody really knows what its worth, making it hard to trade...not like a unique where everyone knows value-by-name.
I would like there to be 2 different kinds of rare items -- differently colored -- a basic commonplace kind of rare item (your standard yellow), and another kind thats ALWAYS godly, has a different color, randomly generated, and EXTREMELY rare...such that you would be lucky to find one after playing intensely for a year.
I just want them to be out there...somewhere...even if I never get one, it will be fun dreaming of it...and even the best uniques in D2 were not that hard to get, I want something that is so rare that people refuse to trade it once they find it
I actually believe your description of the so-called "super rare items" was a role originally intended to be filled by the higher level unique. After extensive botting and Mfing though it has degraded to the state we have now.

hopefully builds are diverse enough so that certain mods arent universally good.
I hear ya there. And I just don't want there to be like two classes that are uber powerful while lowly Assassins like me remain the brunt of everyone's jokes.

Also, I hope they could add new weapons to the game once and awhile along with new dungeons. Like not a WoW type patch but more of a once in a blue moon type of update.

1) I agree that there shouldnt be 1 item best for all players...but thats not what I was saying. I was basically asking for randomly generated items that draw from a set of better modifiers -- ie, like rare items, but using their own set of modifiers that have better potential stats.
2) They already do add new items once in a blue moon. For example, Annhilus charm and Gheed's charm. There are others too, I think...
i hope they do make it like this. ive always wanted to have an item that people would look at and think "where did he get that? i want one!"
i think that as long as the item is super powerful and no one knows the value, as long as its obvious that its worth something, then it could make things very interesting. like in a real economy, the value of something is never set in stone. you can always find something really cheap or really expensive. so you could essentially buy it for cheap and sell it for lots. but like you said, if it was so rare, why would you want to trade it (:
