I have one major concern with PVP victory being based on total number of teams kills after a finite period of time- won't this promote teams to target only 1 or 2 players on the other team who may have weaker defenses (i.e. the wizard or demon hunter classes). I don't want to be a demon hunter and constantly running for my life every session. Similarly, I wouldn't want to play a barb who may rarely be targeted for a kill and thus no sense of threat to your character dying. I know Blizzard is trying to properly balance dps and offensive skills, but I'm guessing the defensive skills may not be getting the same scrutiny.
A possible improvement or solution to this is to make a random alive player on a team worth 2 points instead of one and for some short duration (30sec or so) and randomly change the 2-pt character throughout the match. This way there's more strategy and thinking whether to target the 2pt character or continue after the weakest character who's being exploited.
Hoping PVP doesn't suck or become super repetitive

If they add in that Diablo 2 style dueling then who cares. A lot of people won't even bother with arena then unless they wanna dick around.
Also the weakest is always going to be ganked and jumped regardless of format, so making a random player worth points won't help you. Once the weak is gone they can jump the strong and pretty much dominate the game.
Trolling people (specially pesky physical DPS ones) with a mass debuffing and dodging Monk is going to make my day.
Like Dae said, with no ranking system and just mindless non-competitive fun, there's not even a point in saying "Team X wins", as long as everybody had fun.
Winning/losing is probably there only to make their hidden matchmaking ranking system work and properly place you with people of similar "skill" and "gear" level.
DUNCAN99: "small amount of people" rofl, how come D2 survived this long? Not to kill mephisto, diablo or baal one more time thats for sure. Also, there wouldnt be nerfs in PvE because the PvP and PvE skills are separate and they can adjust things specifically to PvP without nerfing PvE. The fun in a nonrated arena wont last long, it will get boring and repetetive when there is no specific goal. A part of the fun in PvP is to climb rankings, get achievements, get braging rights about your rank/rating etc. Also, you're wrong about Diablo 3 not being competetive when it comes to gear. Its a competetive nature there aswell even though its not competetive in a tournament kind of way. People will compare gear with others and start braging about your awsome gear once you've collected the gear you want and thats competetive in its own way.
If the nonrated arena came with more rewards then just cool banners, achievements etc it would be alot more fun. For example: The higher "rank" you get in PvP even though its not visible, the cooler you can look through vanity items. That would make the arena alot more rewarding because eventually you can stand out from the rest if you get high rank enough to get that last PvP vanity item to look awsome. Having just a banner to brag about aint that cool.
I agree with you on a lot of your points, however to say that nonrated arena won't last long but praise Diablo 2 for surviving so long on nonranked pvp just seems all sorts of contradiction. The PvP community will do what we always have done and that is make our rules, make our ladders, and take control of the PvP. We don't require and honestly I don't want Blizzard to intervene with this process, this is what makes a community shine. We don't have to worry about Blizzard making radical changes because some new comers don't quite understand all of the mechanics and how to be good at PvP.
I am sure Capcom when they made Street Fighter had the idea that it would be a global phenomenon and a huge tournament game...not. The community makes the game in the long run, the developer pretty much just gives us the tools to do what we want. If the community deems that Diablo 3 become an esport or a hardcore PvP game then it will happen, we won't get help from Blizzard but who cares? As far as I am concerned from listening to interviews, the Diablo team isn't even good at Diablo, they struggle with PvM and couldn't hang with PvP, those arn't the people I want sticking their nose in the communities business.
I went to blizzcon and played over 20 games of team deathmatch and can tell you im more excited about d3 pvp then ever. Sure you will be able to pick off team members that arent with there team, thats the style of play. But a well balanced pvp team, that supports their team, and doesnt allow them to be picked off will prevail. I played a witch doctor, wiz, barb, monk comp all day saturday and went undefeated. And two of my team members won autographed posters by the entire blizzard dev team for having top scores in a couple of our victories.
One more thing, i was originally opposed to the idea of deathmatch but it works really well in d3. 4v4 also feels a lot better than 3v3, it feels like your team has much more control. I actually played a 3v3 match at blizzcon because of their systems were down, and it didnt feel right.
In my opinion d3 pvp will be competitive and the team play aspect along with the crazy builds combinations will make for highly addictive pvp. I know im already addicted.

thx for sharing, good to hear that! sounds like it's gonna be awesome.

D2 had no visible PvP ranking system... Just saying
Hmm, so you want to play a obvious kiting/ranged dps class, and not have to run/kite for your life?
What world do you live in?
If running and using your range doesnt appeal to you, then I think you should roll a tankier melee champ, because that is exactly how those heroes are gonna play out, as they have in every game out there.
On my wow hunter? I kite. On a sniper in a fps, guess what? I kite and run once someone gets near me.
I actually thought a bit about this when reading through the DH forum. Everyone just assumes that barbs will be tanky and DH's will be weak, what if your team just swaps roles? Make the barb as "glass-cannony" as possible to dish out maximum damage and try to beef up the DH as much as possible with defense and escapes/slows.
The sqishy targets will probably be the first things people go after and I think people could be taken with surprise if you swap it up ;). Just a thought tough..
It should be number of ears tossed into a team container!
I wonder if you can earn a banner with ears on it.
I will be happy as long as it doesn't take 10 minutes to kill anything.
Fast paced is more fun for me anyway.
Hopefully healing abilities won't be effective enough to be annoying in pvp.
I will be PVP just for fun, and as I would like to see WSG style maps it is not a deal breaker. There will be so much fun PVE to do with friends that I won't mind missing pvp as much. It is a nice option just to have anything like an arena. I got along in diablo2 just fine without an arena.
Hopefully healing abilities won't be effective enough to be annoying in pvp.
And I certainly hope they are! Playing a healer in PvP is some of the most MP fun I've ever had. I've already figured out a nice spam healing monk! :Thumbs Up: Maybe I'll annoy you one day "soon."

That in itself is a powerful defensive boost
A kill is a kill, which is a win in my opinion. When you kill someone that's the satisfaction you get. It won't have a rank to look at.

D3 is going to be my favorite game this year (and probably into the future).
I hope Blizz can ameliorate the current state of the PVP system for me.
