I am making most of thoughts here based on the assumption that the world we see in Diablo 3 will be an extension of D2 gameplay wise your regular Action RPG pretty much.
But I think there is room for huge growth in the Universe depending on what happens after D3.
Instead of a the same gameplay we had before I think it would be interesting to have a persistent world with characters fighting for either side of the balance, where the players choose where the stand when they create their characters or through their actions in-game, I believe the time where players are happy with grinding the same boss over and over to max their level is gone. A world where random events and choices by players change the "Balance".
This kind of gameplay would allow Blizzard to incorporate an ever-changing storyline, This I believe will also stay closer to the lore in the books where it isn't necessarily good vs bad but all about keeping the balance in Sanctuary.
Never really played WoW outside the trial, but if I understand it isn't changing based on character choices, My thoughts come more from what has been revealed about how the world in Guild Wars 2 will react to missions completed by players and
playing Dragon Age and other decision based games.
Up till now Blizzard hasn't really got into the "Balance" of Sanctuary at all it has always been good slaying the bad, After reading the books I feel as if that and the Massivness of the world have been lost reall through gameplay through Acts or gameplay at one location.
And to the people that do say it sounds like it has elements of WoW, why not? Obviously it was sucessful and just because it happened in WoW doesn't mean you can't do it in another game. An ever changing balance in a game and multiple sides to a conflict make a game that much more fun in the long term.
I said this in another thread and thought I might add it here:
Since the worldstone has been destroyed technically there is nothing holding back the Prime Evils and Angels from coming into Sanctuary with their true and full forms rather than possessing humans who defeated them as Diablo has. Uldyssian, seems to be the only human in lore that can match everyone because technically he has become Sanctuary.
Again with that said with the World Stone destroyed humans will have nothing what so ever hold their power back which is explained in a interview on why we will see humans that will have almost godlike powers in Diablo 3.
On the same note I don't think Diablo 3 will be Good Guys(Us + Angels) vs Hell but Humans holding back and possibly invading Heaven and Hell themselves.
I dont think diablo3 will be big enough to support two sides against each other. How would joining games work. (All evil people this game) idk. I would rather it be the way it is now.

World of Diablo, what you are asking for, will ruin the Diablo lore.
Nah it is possible for it to not destroy the lore.. it's even possible for it to greatly increase our knowledge of sanctuary.
I like this idea, would be really fun I admit.
Thing is tho, it would probably have to be an MMO.. I dunno why but if blizz makes a game like this it's gonna be an MMO.. and I'm not sure Diablo would fit as an MMO. For sure I'd play it lol but I think alot wouldn't.

This body holding me, reminds me of my own mortality.
Embrace this moment. Remember... We are eternal, all this pain is an illusion.
At first probably not but it was said in a thread I read here that Diablo would be killed in this game based on an interview. So the game will probably change direction anyway.
I think people might be annoyed at first that it became an MMO but I don't see why not if they could keep the elements that make it Diablo.
An Example would be how Guild Wars is handled towns are MMO areas but once you enter a duengon or wild area a "server" is created where you are either alone or with a party you have. This would keep the duengon crawl experience we love about Diablo allow Blizzard to expand on the lore and we wouldn't have a million trading games being created, so it doesn't lose what it is.
I wonder at what time a Diablo MMO would be set. The big problem with MMOs is that they ruin lore by adding a ton of bosses. When in the Diablo lore is the world filled with bosses? And if Diablo dies, then you can't fight him, so why placing "Diablo" in its name? It would be better to connect it to Sanctuary rather than Diablo, that way you have much more freedom to let the characters fight more minor demons that doesn't impact lore so much.
That or make it a spin-off.
That is the great thing about making it persistent. Instead of a game with a story/time line you have events and demons that are ever changing.
Example:
One of the greater demons, something less than Prime Evils but still powerful is leading an army into Sanctuary, for the next few weeks the characters of the world fight to hold back invading forces, this can be done through random events that occur while in game with a set quest that allows you to face the greater demon after defeating a set amount of his "invading army"
Other events other that invasions, can be treasure hunts, or sieges.
Treasure Hunt: Something like Stormfury has to be found again to fight Karbaxis again but it is not know where it was finally lost or even if Darrick is still alive.
Sieges: The Church of Zakarum is tired of the Necromancers so the decide to hunt down the followers of Rathma and it is up to the players to choose a side and fight for it.
With this you accomplish 2 goals players can accomplish set goals that push the long term storyline forward whole not spamming the game with a infinite amount of bosses. After a set amount of time the demon and his army are pushed back.Obviously to make it really persistent the Humans must be able to lose ground and if that occurs they must push the opposing forces back.
You can keep Diablo and the Prime Evils in the game by making one of their invasions a large event that lasts lets say two months. These larger events are spaced apart by small/medium sized events that keep the game interesting but not tedious.
These are all rough ideas I am sure Blizzard with all its great workers can figure out a way to keep lore intact and still advance the story with no set timeline but a continually evolving game.
While I think that would take way too much work, more than they would put into the game, that it would be amazing. I would love a game were every time I log in, I say " what do I have to kill this time, demons or angles?". It would also make the game so much fun not knowing just what they game will be. Overall, the game would stay the same but new monthly events to participate in would be awesome.

World of Warcraft ruined the original Warcraft lore.
World of Diablo, what you are asking for, will ruin the Diablo lore.
WoW doesn't effect the Warcraft lore. When (if) Warcraft 4 comes out, it will simply ignore everything that has happened in WoW. Blizzard has already stated this. However, you could argue that the immersiveness is gone because of WoW...
And yeah, World of Diablo is a bad idea... Just no. Let's keep Diablo simple okay? It's supposed to be an action RPG. If you want a different type of game, why not create a new universe for it? I think/hope that's what they're doing for that new as of yet unanounced game anyway..
It would still be a Action RPG if it used the system I outlined in one of the replies,
The towns are pretty much lounges where one can trade and talk but one you exit the town, you are in your own game void of other users free to explore alone or with a party. It doesn't lose its Diablo lure, the only difference is instead of having a chatroom on game selection screen, you have it in the game at a town where you can talk and trade, once you leave that area you go to what the core of Diablo has been an Action RPG with a party if you so.

I agree with your second idea. I actually hope they don't make another warcraft style rts, just because of all the issues it will make with WoW. I mean, I guess you could call it a parallel universe or some such nonsense like comic books do, but why not just make a whole new world? Leave Warcraft lore to WoW and it's sequels/expansions/etc. They could even make it an RPG-RTS, like they did War3 (only more like it). That way, they have the arpg in diablo, the hardcore/retro RTS in SC, the MMO rpg in WoW, and the whatever you call warcraft3 in a new universe. That would also let people work on something they aren't tired of, cause how long can you keep creating off of one universe before it gets old and/or insane (aka, just how long can we keep killing Diablo? Or how many demon generals do we have to kill before the Burning Legion is no longer a serious threat? Or how many times can the SC universe end a game in a nice stalemate?)
When (if) Warcraft 4 comes out, it will simply ignore everything that has happened in WoW. Blizzard has already stated this.
Wai..what?
I am going to assume that you read a quote from Blizzard saying that they would not include haiwazupguys, a level 80 Paladin who killed Arthas the first time, in the lore. Not that WoW doesn't matter. That's simply not true, the lore has developed immensely. For gameplay reasons there's of course limitations, and retcons would probabl happen, but large gist of it is definitely not gone in the case of a new Warcraft game.
PlugY for Diablo II allows you to reset skills and stats, transfer items between characters in singleplayer, obtain all ladder runewords and do all Uberquests while offline. It is the only way to do all of the above. Please use it.
Supporting big shoulderpads and flashy armor since 2004.
Exactly. That's why I want the warcraft 3 team to move on to a new IP. I'm not just saying a Diablo RTS, or something. I'm saying a whole new RTS realm. I wouldn't even be opposed to another fantasy IP.
