This is an edited excerpt from a post of mine from the thread "Im i the only one that thinks d3 is amazing?" on the Diablo III General Discussion board. But I think it's an idea that should be read by as many 'haters' as possible.
I think that a good portion of the people complaining about the game, are just victims of age. Tastes change. When I was little, I used to run around the yard playing imaginary war with my neighbor friend, or play with hot wheels cars on the kitchen floor. But, at age 23, that stuff just isn't fun anymore. And with 11 years between D2:LOD and D3, plenty of time has passed for series veterans to grow up. So, I wouldn't be surprised if a good half of the people who think D3 is trash compared to D2 are teenagers and young adults whose tastes have changed. They just don't know that it has happened.
I think this could be a big factor in the discussion, but I personally believe most of the complaining is from new players to the Diablo franchise.
They've become accustomed to how WoW-style loot works, where you go kill the boss who drops the loot you want. There is still RNG in what exactly drops, but this is chosen from a predetermined list of items that can possibly drop.
In Diablo, however, it is completely random what can drop, and so the idea that you may or may not get the gear you want without using the GAH/RMAH becomes quite scary and frustrating. This is what has kept me playing the game daily however, since I love the endless grind to get better gear, and that feeling when you roll a 1200 dps 1h wep is too addicting to pass up ^^

"Never argue with an idiot; they'll drag you down to their level and beat you with experience."
I can see that. I am loving Diablo 3 but I'm also realizing I don't have the time to devote to just grinding items like mad anymore, which sort of diminishes the fun of the genre. So I still play it quite a bit but a lot of my time ends up going elsewhere like work, and family.
I'll have to agree, tastes defiantly change. Hell I loaded up D2 for the first time since D3 launched, and while I was full of nostalgia, I couldn't help but feel the game was lacking, a lot. I played D2 a ridiculous amount and it was a great game, but I don't have near as much fun with it now as I did back then. Blizzards decisions make sense to me with D3; They tried to bring back some of the fun of D2, but offer new and better ways to do a lot of things, because a huge portion of their fanbase has grown up. D3's awesome and I have a lot of fun with it, but I'm defiantly not devoting as much time to it as I thought I would, but that's probably because of my 50+ hour workweek lol =D
The feeling of finding great loot is still there tho, even with all you RMAH haters saying it's taken the fun out of it; Just found a 900 dps rare 1 hand xbow with a socket =D On par with my 1k dps crossbow with a socket, but faster =)
I believe age does take a major role in all this, however I also think Blizzard kind of set the expectations for most alittle too high, with the announcement of unique animated deaths, PVP, ect...Only to remove them mere weeks before launch, I know PVP is coming, but how long from now?
Oddly enough D3 made me actually want to play SCII, not sure if there is some sort of subliminal message in there somewhere, probably that Zerg head no one can seem to find.
