I've had enough of this really skinny body, especially since I used to have a killer body. I lost around 6 kilos since I stopped going to the gym sometime in the passed year. I have to tell you, it feels great. It's a solid outlet and makes you feel good (hurray for endorphins). Hopefully I can get my previous body in something like 4-6 months if I'm lucky and consistent. It's a bummer that I don't have the cash to get a protein shake or anything like that, but that's alright, because merely going makes me pig out on food.
You know what's annoying? Those steroid-infused idiots who can't stop looking in the mirror, flexing their pathetic fake muscles, and keep yelling whilst lifting weights that are laughable when you look at their size. This guy who is the most muscular and defined guy in the gym that I'm currently going to, literally yells whilst lifting weights..weights that I can lift, and I'm easily 6 times smaller. When I had a good 6 months run the last time I went to the gym, I was lifting his maximum weight and then some, all the while not looking at the mirror, not yelling, not tanning 8 days a week, and not shaving my entire fucking body.
its aight, i smashed 1 of thoes dudes in a pub the other night cause he had an attitude problem. Your making me feel lazy and fat, i havn't been to the gym in 2yrs because i stopped playing rugby.
Your feelings are a major concern in my life, so I aptly apologize for creating such a rude and provocative topic. Your forgiveness would be cherished deeply and stored in the left ventricle of my heart.
On a more serious note, I completely let my body melt away from laziness, so it's a wonder that I actually took the step to get back to the gym.
I've been to the gym for only two years. But it got me addicted to working out and i try to carry out at least a few routines at home, six days a week. That is because i don't get the time these days as i have to go to tuitions in the early morning and i hate going to the gym in evenings. I'm pretty happy with the outcome. And yeah, not being able to carry out the routines at any particular day gets me frenzied. I wonder how you were able to take such a long break Meph.
As for shakes, i take them on an alternate day basis. I skip them sometimes when i forget to go to the store. But i'm a pure vegan and so i have to stick to beans and soy milk. They taste like shit. So protein shakes, for me, are just a tastier substitute for protein supplements. But for the people who can consume eggs or chicken, i don't think these shakes really matter.
All thats not for body-building exactly. Its just become a habit.

It's like, you have to eat plenty of eggs, chicken, and all those things to rack up on protein. Everyday. I get sick of eating the same thing for 2 days in a row, nevertheless on a daily basis. That's where protein shakes come on. Some are actually pretty tasty, and you can switch flavors every month when you supply ends.
I hate shakes. They don't really feel "natural" to me. I don't really want to be HUGE like these shakes promise, just muscular. A 5'8" guy like me would just look like a tool covering for his height by bulking up with those shakes.
There can be contradictions. Like your daily diet program might not meet the exact requirement of protein your body needs for muscle building. Or sometimes diets high in proteins might also be high in fat content. People might take to shakes for those reasons as they help both in muscle building and toning.

Yes. Over intake of protein is highly dangerous, that's true. And no person undertaking muscle building is ever advised to replace any part of his/her daily diet with protein shakes. They are just meant to be a source of the extra protein that is sometimes needed to get you over the boundary line between an average and a high build. But as protein shakes contain fewer calories, it would be convenient for people who are looking for weight loss as well to replace the protein part of their daily diet with these shakes for a set period of time.
Overall, protein shakes are a matter of choice. There is not actually as much to them as they claim on the pack. Without the right diet and the right routines, you would be advised to actually reduce the intake of protein shakes. And then a high water intake is also compulsory for people taking high amount of proteins as it helps in absorbing the extra protein content.

I remember my sweat smelling like shit. I'm pretty sure it was because of the shakes. It doesn't happen anymore though. I guess its just necessary to work out according to your protein intake. Taking high amounts of protein with light weight lifts and less reps might not work as you imagine.
But whatever, haven't we all been through the same?

Shakes don't bulk up. Anabolic steroids bulk you up. Shakes just give you the protein that you need to actually build and repair your muscles.
speaking about it repairing = building
when cells are damaged they multiply thats why ur muscle grows. theres no point in taking protein shakes if ur diet is not good, waste of cash. nothing will be absorbed as good as normal food, not to mention most shakes are milk based soo u know allergic stuff and all that..
When cells are damaged...they multiply? Since when? That's such a wrong concept.
Diet or no diet, you're drinking shakes that bring your total protein intake to about 150g/day. A normal person who isn't training needs 50g/day. It has nothing to do with diet. Whey protein has excellent bioavailability, so that's for your "absorbance" talk. Not all of them are milk based.
read some articles about hypertrophy, muscle fiber damage.
no one says theres just milk shakes but most of em are milk based.
protein intake depends on ur weight
bio what? yeah believe in all they say on the box. so u say for instance egg white or steamed chix breast < protein shake? lmao
if u ask me u can have ur chocolate shake for breakfast, dinner and supper xD
Hypertrophy, and I'm copying this straight out of my Pathology notebook, is an increase in the size of the cell along with increased functional capacity. It's a response to signals, or increased functional demands, and is commonly a NORMAL RESPONSE. There is no damage. It's not specific to muscles. I don't know, but I'll take the word of the head pathologist in the hospital over some internet article that you've read in the past.
No, most of them aren't milk based. They even tell you that you can mix it with milk. Mixing milk with milk..yeah, illogical.
Protein intake recommended is based on a 2000 calorie diet for a normal person. Obese people aren't going to go to the gym and stack up on protein, and skinny people will have their dose adjusted. That's beyond the main point we're discussing, anyway.
You can "laugh your ass off" all you want. You didn't even bother to Google bioavailability. It's how much of it your body actually absorbs, and whey protein bioavailability is in the high 90s. That's in response to your silly absorption comment, not a phrase in which I'm telling you that it's better than eggs. It's certainly way more convenient than bioling eggs and preparing chicken breasts. Mix and drink, takes less than 1 minute, and it has everything you need, without any added fat or carbs. I've said it from the get-go. It's a convenience thing. Stop nitpicking.
Simply put, hypertrophy refers to the increase in the size of a cell and not in its number. When the muscles are damaged during weightlifting, the body not only compensates for the loss but also gives some extra tissue material to the cell and hence it grows in size. Hence, repairing = building.
And for as much as i know whey proteins are absorbed relatively very easily by the body. So the bioavailability factor might actually back up the shakes.

What you want is to rip tendons but that's different, and that causes regrowth.
But if you over-exercise you will just damage them.
Pretty irrelevant if the person in question is allergic to milk.
Some people getting unlucky or living in overly sterile environments are not worth making allergy information worth mentioning IMO...
