If the end goal is optimizing the play experience against the content, increased difficulties simply presents a longer period building to the easiest possible means of completing that content.
Is the challenge simply the climb to making that content irrelevant in difficulty?
Well... my goal is to improve my killing speed and survival rate to as close to 100% as possible on MP10. Yes, that's min/maxing, and I believe that's what the game's about: creating the ultimate character.
That said, at that point it's really just killing time and having fun. I'm sort of at that stage at the moment, though in random spurts I do die to some nasty elite affixes. Then I get upset. Then I search for potential upgrades.
