Since we're not just talking about the Christian God any of that could be true. Hell I'm proud if I take a big poop, if it was full of tiny sentient beings I'd want them to worship me also.
I also don't strictly believe you have to have unwavering faith. Not because it's petty though, because it's impossible to know which religion is right and you can be almost doomed from birth depending on where you live and what religion is most abundant there.
I think being a good person is all that really matters, if that isn't enough, oh well.
I thought people would share their ideal of what God can be(my first post was serious btw :sorcerer:) but I see people complaining about what God 'supposedly' is. I say supposedly here because it is obvious to me that no one can create the idea of a perfect God seeing how we all share different values and beliefs and God remains a personal concept.
And this is what religion has already realized and most if not all have defined the Supreme Being as unimaginable, beyond thoughts, words and description. These religions have then set some form discipline to help us achieve a state of mind and body whereby we can 'see' or realize God. It is very akin to any task that we want to complete successfully in real life. For example to achieve good grades, we proceed to follow a discipline- waking up early to study, eating healthily and exercising regularly to keep the body and brain as fit as possible. In terms of God, this discipline does not arrange itself with any substantial rationale and instead relies more heavily on faith since unlike grades we do not here possess any means to measure the result. What do you achieve by worshiping God? Happiness? Peace of mind? Heaven? None of them are tangible objective measures.
I wonder how many here have actually followed these 'rules' behind the discipline and seen their effectiveness or ineffectiveness.
Regardless, it is natural for a thinking man to question anything before undertaking any course of action. I believe religion can be a good start or foundation on the meaning of life but it remains greatly limited since it tries to describe the indescribable. If you are looking for God in religion, it is complete FAIL. No offense to anybody here.
Now for my thoughts of what the Big Boss is about. Once again I'll say this-it is personal.
She is a real badass and totally awesome. Ya that's about it. Lol. Didn't I say that She is indescribable? Why would I want to describe Her?
So that's why the rest of the post is concerned about life and its meaning (for me).
Life is a game. Why we play it? Because we all agreed to but we no longer remember that we did.
The goal of the game is to reach God. There's nothing like game over here. Just press escape when you have died and you're right back in it. You won't know of the escape button until you die though. So essentially, you'll be playing hardcore.(awesome diablo reference)
So we are here and we are playing. Obviously, no games get more boring if there are no challenges.
Some challenges- death of a loved one, betrayal and the list goes on and on.
The thing is each challenge is here to remind us of the goal. And no I don't mean here- worship God and pray that She helps you. I see true prayers as forms of unconditional love. You ask for nothing. You just show your love.
But I digress.
Each challenge has a set of outcomes:
-move forward and overcome it (you grow stronger)
-delay over it (leaving it for later but it's still here)
-the challenge gets the best of you (you grow weaker)
By growing weaker or stronger, I don't mean anything spiritual(though it can be interpreted this way if you want) but merely your own ability to tackle the next challenge in line. Besting the present one leaves you in a better shape and position for the next one.
And so you move on in life facing new situations, sometimes demanding novel strategies and oftentimes using old experience. Discipline (whether by religion or not) helps you keep focused for these challenges and that's how life rolls for me.
Possibly more later on. Going to the swimming pool now. Yay!
And I wouldn't say it's for fear or favors, it's just being grateful.
Grateful for what? Existence is not something to be grateful for, or not. Existence just is. It can be good, it can be terrible, why should it be something to be grateful for? It's not like I requested my existence. It's not like I requested the instinct of self-preservation in my head. It's not like I'm here making up rules that you must not kill yourself. I see a lot of stops against existence in the human brain which makes me think that quite a few people do not want to exist, and would have gotten rid of themselves if there were no stops like that...
My problem with worship and faith for God is that a being of that magnitude would not be so pity to want and expect it. To simplify the idea, that's like a parent having a kid just to have someone love them. You should sacrifice yourself to make them happier, no the other way around.
Pretty much. And parents who make kids just to have someone love them are terrible.
And if you consider some Bible stuff, like sacrificing Isaac... *shrudder*
God is everything. You in your mind can be god. We, as humanity can be god. We can create things by simply thinking about them. If people would know how to use their body's frequency and energy, all these things could be somewhat clearer to us. Secrets have been kept hidden from the commoners for centuries and even today. We do not know what our brain is capable of. We are born with "powers" that we lose bcause no one taught us how to use them. An example of this would be a baby that cries when a murderer enters the room, its this thing we call the 6th sense and its in everybody's mind. Our DNA is shaped and formed every second and we are a result of mistakes that our ancestors did, all the people who jumped down a cliff died, and this got written in our DNA, its as simple as that. Today, studies show that we can change our own DNA just by a thought whch makes us again, gods. "God" is the nature, its the universe, its you and me.
Who says he did? Again, no tangible proof. It doesn't make much sense for me for creator to have to sacrifice anything.
Doesn't have to make sense, why would a greater being need to conform to logic? Of course there is no tangible proof this is a thread about a theoretical god.

You're not thankful to be alive? I'm pretty sure I have a list of dead people that would love to trade places.
Existing is a lot to be thankful for. If you didn't exist you couldn't experience good things. Sure if you didn't exist you wouldn't know anything about it, but since everyone in this conversation exists I would assume people like to have good experiences, and you can't have good ones without bad ones.
If someone wants to kill themselves there is nothing stopping them.
I think being a good person is all that really matters, if that isn't enough, oh well.
This is exactly my thought. My wife is Christian while I do not believe in God. This could cause a lot of problems but both of us hold this ideal above all else and that is how we can get along.

When I say "creator" I am talking specifically about someone that created us. Not some inner spirit or collective unconsciousness or any of that junk. A specific, tangible, creator of the world. Separate from us. So all that philosophical stuff for me is in a different section and creator may or may not be related to it.
Doesn't have to make sense, why would a greater being need to conform to logic? Of course there is no tangible proof this is a thread about a theoretical god.
You need a bit to create this world.
Generally, my assumption is that creator is not an idiot, creator is not primitive, and creator is sensible.
If he is otherwise, he is terrible, and we're all screwed. If he really is like that, I prefer not to know that until I'm done.
You're not thankful to be alive? I'm pretty sure I have a list of dead people that would love to trade places.
No thankful, no. I'm alive. OK. *shrugs* The only reason I'm worried about being alive is because my parents are, tbh. Otherwise, it's all instinct of self preservation + fear of death maybe.
That list of people probably already traded places. As I mentioned, I believe in human-to-human reincarnation.
What we perceive as "logial", doesn't always make it the right choice. I'm not going to claim to know God or know how they think.
Eh? Logic is the same for everybody.
We may lack information. Which, we do.
God's thinking mode is either close or far from us. If he's close to us, we can understand him. If it's far from us, he won't get anything from our worship.
God is everything. You in your mind can be god. We, as humanity can be god. We can create things by simply thinking about them. You, good sir, hit the nail on the head 20 times and screamed alleluia (cause it's just a cool word to scream randomly).

It's all been said. The pun, the not so funny joke, the phrase, something about oneself, the not so random picture.
In my opinion, Equinox is by far the one making the most sense in this thread. People should really start questioning why they believe in what they believe in. Are morals really right? Why should you make an effort for anybody else? More people should read Nietzsche's work.
I believe god isn't a being. It doesn't have will, it doesn't have judgement, opinions, or power of any sort. God is/are the laws of nature. God is the reason why the speed of light is 300k km/s, the reason why everything is made out of atoms and energy, the reason why positive and negative attract each other, the reason why mass exists, the reason why Na and Cl form salt... you get the idea. I guess you could say I believe god is everything metaphysic, the axioms on which physics are based upon, the unchangeable, nonunderstandable characteristics of our universe. Of course, god is just a name, I could just name that 10th dimension.
You then fill these set of rules (or god, or 10th dimension) with actual matter (a separate entity) and you get the universe: matter following rules. Everything we see today, including life, is the direct result of that matter following those rules. The rules have no reason to be, they are not good or bad, the simply are.
I also don't strictly believe you have to have unwavering faith. Not because it's petty though, because it's impossible to know which religion is right and you can be almost doomed from birth depending on where you live and what religion is most abundant there.

Or bad things. It goes both ways.
Except the stoppers.
Instinct of self-preservation.
Fear of death.
Religious writings against suicide and consequences for it.
It's why people do not rush to die who otherwise would have. That, and some people are just plain happy, of course.

I think God and George Carlin would get along great. No doubt both find acts like suicide and genocide hilarious
