I guess I need to get over my misconceptions about it and just go see it. Everyone is saying it's good, or at least entertaining.
It's artistically historic to say the least.

Problem is that there's movies, and then there's movies.
There's movies that are mainly a business, created to entertain the audiences, give them a roller coaster ride of emotions, make them laugh, cry, be afraid or be packed with adrenaline.
Avatar falls in this section. These movies are not so much "good" as they're entertaining, they can be good in their own sense though. It is not necessarily a bad thing if a movie falls into this section, don't get me wrong. But once you've watched more than a thousand movies, you're just not so easily taken by the roller coaster any longer.
Then there's movies that are an art form, that are meant to deliver a message - make the viewer watch the world from a new perspective, make the viewer think of something they hadn't before. Make them baffled, make them stare at the end credits with a "WTF?"-stare.
These kind of movies will never be as mainstream, because they're harder to watch - more challenging, more in your face, less of a mere emotional roller coaster but more of an intellectual challenge.
A good way to differentiate these two types of movies is to ask, does the story loose its effect/grip if the viewer knows the end result? Is the film interpreted the same on the second watch?
Don't take me wrong, I think Avatar is basically finishing the trip that started early 80s. We're already in the era where CGI is indifferent from real images. That's impressive on some levels indeed.
I caught myself thinking about the planet, and how everything moves and lives. I kept looking at the edges of the screen to see a new species or creature that we hadn't been shown before. In the end, I wanted to live a life like Sully lived. And I'm sure most would agree.
I knew that the hero was going to do that "thing at the very end" because it was quite obvious that he would. I knew there would be an epic battle climax. I knew that there was going to be horrific loss of life. I knew the love story would be the way it was. I knew all these things, and it still did not lose (correct spelling) it's effect on me.

It truly is. Avatar is an incredible piece of art, despite what anyone else says.

I don't know if qualifies as make the viewer think and don't want to spoil anyone but the Life Tree and Pandorian Animals part in Pandora made me think A LOT after the movie!
Of course, there is creativity how James Cameron conceived these ideas, but pretty sure he is also trying to tell a message with that as well.
Spirituality I think is touched on with these life forms on Pandora that's something that I never seen before in any other movies!
It's NOT a DEEP DEEP movie that has to make you think, but a Semi-deep movie that has themes can make you think if you want.
It's certainly not a no-plot story that some people claim, they don't recognize it doesn't mean it doesn't exist and isn't interesting. It's not stupid like Transformers is. It's probably smarter than MOST blockbuster movies these days.

Blizzard, please put back the single player offline mode!
I've only seen a handful of films in the theater this year; well below my average, but this is one I'd like to see. Probably won't be able to until next week, though.
Unless I can talk the family who are visiting for the holidays into sitting through a 2.5+ hour movie.
Obviously, the thing about a great movie is that it is all completely opinionated. That is the great thing about art. One person can love it while the other can hate it.

I just liked it. I think it's the kind of movie that you really like when you get out of the theater, but kind of like it a bit less in retrospect. I still like it just as much as I did when I watched it, though.
I thought Neytiri was hot. I'd totally sex a blue chick.
I second this statement. The green dinosaur does not discriminate.

Sure, but it's not so much the color as simply the fact that she was hot
I suppose I wouldn't fuck an ugly blue chick lol. Yes I am shallow. I'd fuck an average looking blue chick though. The colour would just be totally appealing.
