Why does everybody assume the author of that zombie guide is right?
Not everyone assumes that. But it's the most thoroughly researched and consistent book about zombies. No other author but Max Brooks has spent as much effort in covering so much information about the zombie.
His ten basic guidelines are as follows:
1. Organize before they rise!
2. They feel no fear, why should you?
3. Use your head: cut off theirs.
4. Blades don't need reloading.
5. Ideal protection = tight clothes, short hair.
6. Get up the staircase, then destroy it.
7. Get out of the car, get onto the bike.
8. Keep moving, keep low, keep quiet, stay alert!
9. No place is safe, only safer.
10. The zombie may be gone, but the threat lives on.
I do find his third rule to not really depict what needs to be done to the zombie head since ultimately the brain needs to be destroyed. But the chances of somehow managing to get bit by a decapitated zombie head are phenomenal. And at any rate, I think he really meant to let common sense prevail. So it's the first part of the rule that makes sense while the second is more just part of the expression.
Simple, fun way to get rid of head, punt it like a football (american). I wonder how far it would go.
Yeah... I'm gonna wear tights. And then underwear outside the tights. Then a cape. You see where I'm going with this.
The point of tight clothes is not having anything that a zombie could grab hold of.
In World War Z (Max Brooks' other book), the military gets annihilated at Yonkers because they are slowed by extensive body armor and biological protection. There were other problems, but the infantry being outfitted wrong was the final, crippling error.

Yeah. It makes a good point at that part of the book too. For each war the military fights, they are basing it off of how they fought the last war. So by the time they actually learn how to effectively fight the zombies, it's about over anyway.

See? I followed these rules the most. The nomadic plan seems to have the best chances to me.
Like they say, out of sight, out of mind. We will be like splinter cells if this happens. Will never see us coming.
They may smell us but if we can avoid them then we win.

Yeah, a lot of your plan was sensible. It was just the whole part about getting off the continent that I was scrutinizing.
Ya, with good reason. But staying on the land with the zombies scares the hell out of me. The water seemed to be the best idea but in the long run it may not be.
So it comes down to the risks:
Chance of survival on infected land and hope that it will eventually end due to a dying out or military operation
Chance of survival on the waters and hopefully finding a non infected area.
Here's something else I thought of. Won't they starve eventually? With enough supplies we could out last them on a boat. Or at least sail the boat to a more rural doc and gather supplies somehow avoiding masses of zombies...

Again with the water!
But to answer your question, no. Zombies do not require sustenance. Their digestive system doesn't even function anymore. This is why it's so mysterious that they want to eat flesh so badly. And zombies that have consumed lots of human flesh, their stomachs become distended as more and more flesh keeps getting packed down their esophagus. They're not digesting anything.

Seriously, if I was trying to make it to an island, I would be very afraid of other people. I really think you should read World War Z. It paints a pretty accurate picture o If think of what would likely happen to people trying to flee large land masses for secluded islands.

Can they die naturally then?

The whole book said a lot politically and socially. North Korea's reaction was spot on. I did find Cuba's rise to wealth to be really interesting. Oh, look at me spoiling the book for potential readers...
The idea of total war was great. That's the thing about the zombie scenario. This is an enemy that you absolutely must kill every last member of. War has never been about killing. It's about forcing your opponent to lose their will to fight. How do you defeat an army composed of hundreds of millions in which every member is entirely dedicated to killing you, 100% of the time? The only option is meticulous, organized killing.

Without being bitten? You're referring to ferals. People who are out on their own and running from zombies for too long are known to eventually mimic the behavior of zombies. They can be just if not more dangerous than zombies themselves, although they are obviously much fewer. The funny thing about ferals is they can act like zombies all they want, but zombies don't distinguish between the crazies and normal people. Ferals will just as quickly be eaten by zombies.

The Cuba situation was just hilarious I thought. One of my favorite chapters was of the man in space watching the Earth below him change for months on end.
Thats the thing that confuses me about Zombies. They're "made" from people who have been infected with that virus in their brain, and it mass replicates and replaces the brain as a new type of organ, while the rest of the body deteriorates. If thats true, then how would the Zombies get the nutrients for their muscles? With no muscles they couldn't even move at all, they'd just collapse after a while and be able to do nothing. If they inject human flesh, but it doesn't actually get digested, then they can't get nutrients from that to help sustain muscles. So basically, they simply can't work in such a manner? Unless I'm missing something (other than the fact that chances are "zombies" will never arise)?
