Was the first sci-fi, alien experiment game original? Yes.
Was the first FPS original? Yes.
Was the first dungeon crawl original? Yes.
Was the first racing game original? Yes.
Was the first game original? Yes.
Already one hand there. You oughta be thinking of NEW games that are original, not original games.
And as someone once said, "There are no new plots. Writers merely apply new window dressing." Now, this was said about writing, but video games seem to be the same way.
There has not been a single FPS/Fantasy mix since heXen... and that's a whole big huge genre which has been dead for 10 years until Project Offset. I think there is something wrong with that.
You probably never heard of any of those games. Just as people never heard of FPS before doom or whatever. The first games usually never get popular it's their clones that get popular. But my problem is not with those clones.
My problem is the absense of a typical search for uniquenes. Like the RTS Perimeter. It's not like no one changes gameplay these days the don't change ANYTHING these days.
DooM. 1st weapon is melee, second is some pistor, third is shotgun, then assult rifle, then plasma gun, possibly grenades, grenade launcher.
Take HL. Same list, BUT, I give credit to HL because it was a puzzle game and it had like 3 weapons that were actually unusual.
Take Prey. Same rubbish they just look different but still same set up.
Quake... Duke Nukem 3D...
Exceptions are Unreal, Deus Ex, Undying, AvP
And please don't tell me it's the limit of hte sci-fi genre, because sci-fi is NOT limited, same goes for Fantasy.
So basically, we make a game, then we never make it better. We make Diablo, we never make Diablo 2. We never make Titan quest. We never, by this process, make Oblivion.
Clones, at least in the good old days, we often improved over the original, and that's why they're known.
Now don't get me wrong, I know the difference between a clone and a sequel. But without clones, we would no games to play, to compare in a genre to see what is better.
There has not been a single FPS/Fantasy mix since heXen...
So you want a heXen clone? You agree that heXen is a good game, but wouldn't a clone of it, with improvements, be better? Then it would sell, be known, etc.
Sorry, I'm off to bed, but I'd be glad to continue this in the morning. In the meantime, anyone else want in?
Clones are not contributions. Clones are pieces of crap that crowd original games like heXen out so we end up with all these 50 crappy FPS games that are all copies of each other. How many sci-fi games we had with the storyline "Lab experiments/alien invasion"? How many fantasy RPG we have overloaded with all the elves and dwarves?
Games that are original can be counted with the fingers of a hand. And I think that's a very bad thing, not a good thing at all.
I didn't say that the clones were contributions. I said the games that spawned the clones must have been contributions. And yet you also say original games are a bad thing, even though they can be counted with the fingers of a hand?
No but seriously just playing the demo on my PC I played that level 3 times twice on normal mod and 1 on veteran (Hardest mod) it's already that addictive can't wait till the game comes out. I know i'll be hook'd for a long time. I mean it just seem's so realistic, so many things going on at once, and it just sets the new standard of fun and challenging at the same time.
Halo one was the first actual game that I was ever addicted too at the age of 9. Good story, good gameplay, alright graphics (And i usually like games with good graphics but it was that good I didnt care for over rated graphics)
And one most of all you guys are gonna hate me for saying this but World of Warcraft. This was the longest game I have ever played before. I played it for 4 years. over 200 days of played time. Not including all the characters I deleted ect.. And the reason why it changed gaming is because it literally changed my life. Changed my attitude. Learned new things not only in gaming world but also in real life. It taught me things. It changed my life as a whole. For merely a game to do that it has to be listed under "Changed gaming"

I've enjoyed so far what Halo 3 has taught me. That there are a lot of degenerates out there who take some games too seriously, have no manners, and love to call people "fucking faggots".
I would have to agree on Doom. The whole story of ID entertainment working from bottom to top with this game (and Quake) were fricken brilliant in creating and ecorporating their feelings into the games; and it showed.
Next is obviously Super Mario. It's just a classic best seller. I dont know if there is n e one that hates this game (And if they do, well, ur all alone whoever u r....lol)
And lastly, I've either gotta go with Halo (numero uno) or Forza Motorsport (FM) Series. Halo basically sold the original black and huge Box. As for Forza, the customizing and auctioning of cars in the second one cleaned up the first game (which is still funn) and made it a great contender to Project Gotham & Grand Turismo. Way to go Microsoft!!! Woot, Woot. lol
I said the games that spawned the clones must have been contributions.
Yeah but you didn't mention any. Nobody knows those original game they sit dust covered, while DooM and other clones are the one that popularize the genre, but only sometimes, sometimes games go down and they never rise (heXen, Perimeter, Deus Ex, Rev, Descent), you guys just play clones of clones all the time, all these new games are not original. Almost every new FPS game goes back all the way to the game that came before DooM. That game, long ago, was original. DooM is not original. Doom was actually preceded by Wolf and Wolf was preceded by a game who's name I forgot and it really looked weird, something you guys will never play because originality is not what you value and you will never play the first game, you will only play the polished clone of that game (DooM).
I thought Doom was really groundbreaking for its time. Mostly just cause it was so underground yet so popular at the same time and was totally politically incorrect.
agreed, game still is one of my fave FPS's ever, i still play it to this day.
game did change the face of games forever
but as stated above Wolf(wolfenstein) came befor doom and i loved the hell outta wolf as well
Yeah, I understand Wolfenstein came before Doom. But people didn't have as many problems with killing Nazis as much as all the explicit images in Doom. I just think Doom was much more of a controversial game. And for ID to stand by it despite the controversy was a brave move on their part.
Firstly it was Wolf, secondly, Wolf was STILL not first there was a webpage for tha FIRST game. Thirdly, DooM is an FPS of a particular line up and don't tell me that DooM was all that different from Wolf because I'll tell you heXen was WAY MORE DIFFERENT than DooM or Wolf but no one could handle it. Because that's not what people look for. My point is, nobody likes original games, and I personaly not very fond of popularized clones as games that "changed the industry". I think that's a bad thing because the more of these games we have, the more clones will we have, the less original games.
I don't mind clones that are fun to play. I just think they should not be raised higher than they deserve. They did not make it up, they just took what was there and polished it.
If a developer has an idea for a game, he wants it to be good.
He isnt just some robot that is going to make a game hella similiar to another.
He wants it to be unique..and different..but still on the same playing field as a previously released game.
Games for me..lets see.
Yeh Zelda is one for sure, one of the first games I played.
The Quake series, my first FPS.
My whole family loved these games, and was very serious about it.
We'd all lan up, myself, 3 brothers, and my dad would play quake.
It took alot of skill, and always someone was better then the other.
My brothers saved up all their money to go to Quake conventions etc.
Counter-Strike, got me into competetive FPS.
I was in several Cyber Athelte Leagues teams.
Only got up to CAL-IM tho lol.
I know some CAL/OGL people are on these forums.
I really, reaaaally like Unreal Tournament 3.
It reminds me of Quake 3 back in the day.
Games I'm playing now would bee.
UT3 demo(going to buy it)
WoW(sorry :])
Halo 3
SKATE
I liked Quake 1 for atmosphere and Quake 3 because it was fast but Quake 2 always seemed very boring and easy (yes, on Hard) so I never finished it lol...
Agreed on UT3 demo I think I'm going to buy it too. O: Vehicle CTF is FUN.
ok babies. did ANYONE ever say anything about the greatest game of ALL time?

the original Zelda was a pretty great game... its unfortunate that nintendo has recycled the game's gimic 100's of times instead of coming up with new material.

I was actually kinda not all that excited about the UT3 Demo the first time I played it.
It stayed like that for a week, until I tried Vehicle CTF.
Totally changed my mind.
Can you play it on full tilt and graphics?
I can on my Quad Core, it runs so smooth. It looks so real.
Lots of my friends have to play it on low and choppy.
I feel bad for them, because the game is amazing on full tilt.
