The twitter tracker is starting to make a name for itself, always giving us bits of news for us to salivate and speculate over, all the while not giving us any actual details.
Anyways, this time we've got an interesting quote about the skill system.
Official Blizzard Quote:
Diablo: The skill system revision is in full force. Trees begone! I think it might be a winner. Jay says hi.
So there we have it, skill trees might be out for good. This could be a good thing though, we've just grown so accustomed to skill trees that we haven't taken time to consider what benefits may come of a tree-less skill system.
First off, no longer would we have to waste skill points in skills we never use. Remember in Diablo II, when you had to put a point into Sacrifice to get Blessed Hammer? Nine times out of ten, that was a wasted point that never saw any usage. No longer would we need to waste our points in skills we'll never use.
Also, this will open up countless character customization options. Sure, cookie cutter builds could become even more widespread, but for those players who liked to experiment with new and innovative builds, this will be a godsend. Now, we may be able to take a sampling of skills that work well together, but don't fall into the same skill tabs.
But, in classic Blizzard fashion, they didn't tell us more than we need to know. They left us to ponder what the new skill system could be, and knowing Blizzard, it will probably blow our socks off.
Also, props to Kamori for noticing it first, throw some rep at him if you've got the time.

"One in every 10 million people can potentially have a headache from this pill." God forbid she is the 0.000000001% of having a headache.
Will the new skill system be like Torchlight then?
Anyway D3 will definitely be a NEW game...
Wether that comes out as very good or just good remains to be seen....
Possibly a lvl up system like many other games has.. such as your earn new skills/talents by lvling up. But you must use the skills to lvl them up, like many other games. Ive never been a fan of this type of skills lvling cause someone with enough free time could max out there all there skills.
Or maybe a skill/talent plane such as the one they used in FF10. That was a very new and fun way to customize your character.
There's also been a few games that used items or other players to learn there skills/talents but have limited slots to utilize. Such as Lost Odyssey
I wouldn't mind seeing perks or special birth attributes. That's always a nice way to add customization to different characters.
How ever they decide to do it. I'm sure i wont be disappointed. =)
I actually think I'm going to miss the old skill tree system, it had its charms. Maybe this will be an improvement though and I guess it goes along with Blizzard's desire to have every skill be effective.
I wish we could have some more information though... After this fiasco with the patch, you'd think Blizzard would be a little more generous with what they tell us. Then again, I guess they don't want to announce a new skill system before they've finalized it.
I've always been a bush type of person anyway. Bye trees.
I don't see anywhere in that quote that says they are implementing any sort of new skill mechanic. Just that the trees themselves are gone which I thought we already knew. Any skill in a certain tier can unlock any higher level skill.

A tree implies that there has to be roots (i.e, skill points wasted), so I have a feeling the skills will be the same as previous, but you don't have the "wasted" skill points.
As such, it would be much easier to balance more skills to be good (especially with Rune variations).
Instead of a "tree" build, think of it as a lawn of grass. Sure, some blades of grass will be higher and better than other blades of grass, but each blade of grass is independent of each other.
Will you be getting another one in 20 days? Or better, will you be getting one of those keyless keyboards? No, you'll probably just buy a plain ol' keyboard because you know it works and works well.
The only acceptable thing they can do is what Torchlight did... except there are still trees. The difference is that the only requirement to go to the next tier is level and, so you don't dump 10 points in to a skill right as you get it (a-la D2), there are level caps on each skill.
So it's balanced.
If that's what they mean by getting rid of trees then that's great. Sadly, I don't think that will be the case.
For the same reason you don't go out and buy a new keyboard every 20 days.
As far as I know, they don't completely revamp how the skill trees work every twenty days, and we've essentially had the same skill tree system for years now in Diablo II. Why not?
Will you be getting another one in 20 days? Or better, will you be getting one of those keyless keyboards? No, you'll probably just buy a plain ol' keyboard because you know it works and works well.
We are talking about diablo 3 here.. not a keyboard. And im thinking D2 has been out for a bit longer than 20 days.. correct me if im wrong tho. =)
What im saying here is a lil change after 9 years 5 months and... 20days?(i think thats right im horrible at math) of playing a game, wont hurt a bit.
As far as I know, they don't completely revamp how the skill trees work every twenty days, and we've essentially had the same skill tree system for years now in Diablo II. Why not?
Because we have a system that works, and works well.
You missed the analogy.
You don't change things simply 'cuz'. You change things when there is a problem. And, generally, if there's a problem you first start by changing small things so you can observe how it impacts the game.
Torchlight did just this. They changed the trees to being tiers. Same system, similar mechanic, except now stockpiling points to dump in to one skill doesn't work and those lower skills, even if it's only one point spent in to them, actually matter because you use those skills to level up.
So, why don't you go out and buy a keyboard every 20 days? Because you have one that works and you don't need to buy a new keyboard every 20 days. To compare the keyboard analogy to Diablo time, I've had this keyboard since Diablo 1 and it still functions just as good as it did then.
When they say "We're removing trees" it's essentially like saying "We're removing keys from keyboards." There's no reason to do it other than to add another dot on to the back of the box.

It's an analogy there chief.
As an aside, I don't understand why people on the internet have a hard time grasping analogies. They're one of the simplest tools for putting things in to perspective.
I could have used cars and it would have been the same thing. Or televisions. Or houses. Or anything for that matter. The result is the same. Sometimes you have to upgrade what you have so it works, but you don't have to completely change it. There's a reason houses still have roofs, cars still have engines, and televisions still have A/V cable inputs.
Look, you can be excited for a brand new skill system, that's great. Until I know what the skill system is going to be like, I'm going to resent it because I know from years and years of playing games with this exact system that it works. It works so well that any ARPG I've played that hasn't had that system...
Actually no, I've never played an ARPG that hasn't had skill trees that didn't come out before Diablo 2.
Your double-posts have been merged. Please avoid this in the future as it is a type of spam.

wow at the keyboard guy, anyhow the whole point here is that, diablo 1 while being simple easy (and part chance) was a fun skill system. and diablo 2 while new (at the time) was cool because it changed from the first game. so why shouldnt it be the same for the 3rd installment of the game.
so the keyboard guy understands,if you old house burns down are you goin to look for old material to rebuild it or are you gonna just build a new house. I would choose the latter.
blizz usually does not upset us when they bring out new content. Hence skill tree, from the skill book system.
if there changing it it is for a reason. the only thing they do is hide information from us for long periods of time.
So, Credge, how do you know this system isn't better? Did you see it already? Did you already play with it? What's wrong with trying to make something better?
I didn't miss the analogy. I just returned your sarcasm
