Hi, new here but imo people get excited over Diablo 3 because Diablo 2, not because they want a whole new game but because they have enjoyed the past Diablo games. If they make this a D2 version of WoW then this game will definetly not be as much fun to me because I come to expect a certain theme and playstyle from Diablo that does not include WoW.
I say bring back D2 style inventory. I'd rather bitch about inventory size and see the awesome graphics that Diablo 2 had than look at tiny little pictures.
They had the different inventory in D2 becuase the only real 'detail' you got was from what the item looked like in the inventory. You didn't get much once you put it on.
In D3, it's the other way around (which I like). You don't have as much detail in your inventory, but when you put the item on, you get a ton of detail.
Which is better, item detail in inventory, or looking awesome with the item equipped?
EDIT: I think once people buy the game, they will realize that Blizzard knows what they are doing. Stop worrying about eveything being so "WoW-ish".
Also, there is a petition out now for the D3 team to NOT change the art style.

I'm still waiting for someone to say that we should have 640x480 graphics so that we can be just like D2. And none of that fancy 800x600 stuff neither - a return to the old school diablo.
What I want from diablo III is a good game and that means design improvements. There are tradeoffs to gameplay that the designers need to make. Can you really imagine problem solving or improving the game in an environment where you want to hold onto the old, frustrating, complained about and outdated concepts? Imagine sitting at the table and having one designer shooting down idea after idea because "it isn't diablo". I can just imagine "but people hated the inventory system. It's easy to fix, why don't we..." "No, can't change it. That's what made diablo diablo!"
The new inventory is a trade off for making the game more playable, quicker paced and less frustrating. I don't care if they decided to use the exact same bags, icons and incentory screen as Wow - especially if it was shown that the design uses the least clicks, is the most intuitive and is the least frustrating system. And if that means they also need to change the "spacing" of items to avoid nesting huge bags, great. I suspect it means that organising my bags will be that much easier, and I'm all for it.
It's like people have been dreaming about what the game could be like for so many years that anything, no matter what it is, would come up short... and any change from what they have "branded" as diablo (like the inventory) is automatically seen as bad. I do kind of hope it is similar to wow though... I'd love for wow to be an isometric, randomly generated loot, quick paced and cooperative game... cause that's sure not the wow I quit. I'm sorry, but I just don't think that using bags will... how do you say... overshadow those games elements. No more than using 3d graphics instead of (practically) tiles and sprites will make it "wowish".

As far as a bag system goes I would love to see some extra inventory room. I do wish we could still see the full item but I am willing to give that up for the space.
The thing that bothered me though were the skills. I noticed that there were some skills that had ranks i.e. Hammer of the Ancients was rank 4/5 and Battlecry was rank 5/10. While other skills such as Whirlwind had both a rank and level (rank 1/20, current lvl 1). Does this mean that not all skills will level to 20? or is this some sort of advanced leveling system that incorporates ranks and levels. I do not mind some evolution of the skill tree but limiting the number of times I can lvl one skill verses another is disappointing (so I hope that isn't it)!
I am totally for the new system. Running to town to stash items killed the speed of the game and combat.
I also like the BIG armor on the Barbarian.
The only thing I'd like to see change is the lighting. Diablo is suppose to be a dark game. They should at least explore the darker art style before deciding on one.
Sonicpld, stop being tied to D2. Games evolve. If u want the D2 inventory system... GO PLAY D2. Things change. And all the years after the development and release of D2, ALOT has changed. Get with the modern times. Sequels are suppose to be more/different/better to their prequels.
Also... For those of u that keep comparing D3 to wow... get over it. Really. All of the stuff in wow has been done before, so its not "From WOW". There has been bag systems in previous games, ext...
That would be cool, but then with the individual loot system, if you killed say tyreal, you'd have multiple copies of a really powerful sword/armor/ whatever it is that he has. Plus bosses will drop loads of very powerful stuff.
Also it will be difficult to get a barbarian helm as i dont think we will be fighting/killing many barbs.
1-2 months is very hopeful. Cant wait for this one though.
The only thing with this inventory system is the fact that you cant really look at every little detail but i am going to trust blizzard, they havent ever disappointed me yet.
Did anyone else notice in one of the videos that there was a cool-down on a battle-cry......not more spamming battle-shouts, i think i just died a little inside haha
I've been playing Diablo for a long, long time now, and one of the things that always bugged me was the constant ports to town to unload loot. I do feel that this system was needed to keep the action going without constant interruptions.
That being said I actually like the bag system in WoW and I don't feel that having that system will really distract from the feeling that I'm playing diablo3 at all.
I agree 100% with what you said, I also played sence Diablo 1 first came out and feel you always need to run to town if you found a good drop, looked in ur bank..and it was full with stuff you needed. It made you throw away so much 'could of used items. I also liked how WoW had the items iconed in your bag, so much more room, but no doubt we still need that bank chest.
I think that the way the inventory system has changed is for the better.
In my inventory for Diablo 2, it was mainly filled with charms so I never had enough space to carry a lot of items. >.<
