So, I just saw this movie yesterday and I have to admit, I was up all night thinking about it. For those of you who do not know, the movie is based on a true story about a hiker who got trapped from a rock that pins his arm. He is stuck in a canyon for...127 hrs. As it is no surprise that he survives since he told the story, I will ruin the ending by saying that he cuts his own arm off, with a dull knife, so that he can get out of the canyon.
My question is, do you think you could do the same? Faced with life or death, what extremes do you think you would be able to do in order to live? I know this is a hard question mainly because such an extreme is beyond our comprehension in normal everyday life but it is still worth taking about.
As for myself, I would hope to be able to say yes. Not that I want to cut off my arm but that I would be able to take such extreme measures to stay alive. I think a big part would be the motivation of wanting to continue. As it briefly covers in the movie and interviews with Aron Ralston, his motivation to do the act was spurred on by a vision he had of his son (who was not born yet). Basically, this idea of his son to be gave him the strength to do it. I would hope that I would find such courage and motivation to do anything to keep myself alive.
Again, this is all just hypothetical (unless you have been is such dire circumstances, in which case I would love to hear about). I don't think that anybody can without reasonable doubt say they would or would not but...

True, I think a state of delusion and separation from reality is almost needed to perform this task. With a clear head, I think it would actually be harder. You would be more in tuned with what you were actually doing.

I'm not sure if I would or not.. Quality of life is something most people take for granted, and after suck a thing happens to you, between your physical state, and your mental health, your quality of life is going to take a hit, likely a big one.
I know this because I have always aimed to increase my quality of life, I'll give you a short story real quick, (I promise it'll be short lol). I'm a musician, it's been my source of income, and joy since I was in grade school. I took pride is having A+ hearing, 24k in both ears which most people loose at the age of 8. It helped me tune perfectly by ear, and just enjoy music more. On a side note, it always helped my pin point sounds, you know how when you hear something and sometimes you know exactly how far it is, how big it is, how far off the ground it is, if it's heavy or not, that kinda thing.
On July 22nd of last year (2010) my "friend" whom was drunk, thought it a good idea to light a firecracker right next to my ear as I was distracted playing COD. It was so close to my ear it blew out my ear drum completely. Many hospital visits, and audiologists later I to this day, and forever will be hearing impaired, with a bad case of tinnitus in both ears. If you don't know what tinnitus is, you know when you are exposed to a loud sound and your ears are all muffled and ringing? It's that, forever. There is no treatment that has been found. I haven't had a moment of silence since that night, it sounds like a fire alarm is going off in both my ears at all times...
When I play with my band, I have to where heavy duty ear plugs, where I can barley hear what I'm playing. I have trouble understanding people unless they're in front of me.. All and all my quality of life took a huge hit, and there's times honestly all I want is play Diablo 3 to get my mind off it. Back the the OP story, idk what I'd do knowing how my life would be after..
“We act as though comfort and luxury were the chief requirements of life, when all that we need to make us happy is something to be enthusiastic about.” - Albert Einstein
My father did have to make a decision about losing his arm or his life back in a textile mill accident back in the 1950's.
My Dad was working a midnight shift and was the only one working if you are not counting the security guard. The security guard was really no use since he was panicking the whole time and company did not give him keys to open the main door and also the only phone was in the office managers office which the guard had no key to.
The textile machine had his arm trapped and fortunately my dad did manage to get to the emergency stop button before the machine pulled his head closer to crush it. My did did manage to get himself free from the machine but his arm was only being attached by a few strands of tissue. My dad focused more on limiting the loss of blood. My dad used his belt just above the elbow to restrict the blood flow. He constantly tightened it as much as possible. My dad had to wait until the morning shift arrived for work so he can get to hospital.
Being able to sacrifice your own body part to save your life will depend on whether you are the type of person that panics in life and death situations. If you panic in such instances the chance for you to not panicking will be very low. You will also have to be in a frame of mind that you can think on what to do after losing the arm before cutting it off and also on how you are going to amputate it.
I believe I will be able to do so since I have never panicked in a life and death situation.
[edit]
My dads quality of life was slightly impaired more to do with the phantom pain(itch) from the missing arm.
My dad did adjust to loss of the arm very quickly and the nursing staff at the hospital was surprised with the adjustment. My dad never used the replacement arm since he stated it got more in the way of his life since he could not move it without using his other arm. The only thing it did was make other people more comfortable around him at first. My dad taught himself on how to do things with one arm and as well as using his legs or other things that was around. I have never felt that my dad had a lower quality of life. Different yes but not lower. Most people were astonished to see some of the things he could do with one arm. Some things he had to come up with unique solutions in order to do it.

True my Dad did not have to cut his arm but he did make a choice to free himself from the machine before the ambulance could come. He made the decision very early that his best bet would be to free himself and try to see if the guard had the key to call for help. The accident happened a few hours before the morning shift would show up.

I think I would NOT hike alone. Just saying. Or at least I would tell people where I was going.
However, if I was in that situation, I would probably end up doing something similar to avoid dying of thirst/hunger/drowning. Its not like theres much of a choice. Not that it wouldn't suck and wouldn't be a terrible thing to happen though.
Well, first thing you would want to do would cut off circulation to the arm, that would help with it immensely. I'd try to cut off circulation then wait 5 or 6 hours and see if I could feel it. (Either that, or cry like a baby and die.)

thats what the guy did too. his arm was rotten and had a fair amount of gangrene by the time he cut it off. but by the time he had to cut through his tendons; that's where he said it was like his arm was in molten lead.
How would you become a cyborg exactly? Would you find mechanical parts and a couple of microprocessors under a rock, and perhaps a guide to robot construction/details of the human body?
If my hand was pinned, and I had no choice but to cut it off, I certainly would. I'd strap my forearm, effectively numbing my hand and greatly decreasing its blood flow. I'd then burn where I want to cut, because that would quickly kill any nerve endings (it would hurt like fuck, but it would hurt less than cutting it slowly), and clear any bacteria that might have latched itself onto my hand. I'd then try and break the bone, because breaking it would be FAR better than actually sawing through the bone with whatever instrument I have at hand (pun SERIOUSLY intended). After it's cut off, I'd rap it with something, try and hold on for dear life, and hope to survive (major blood loss can still occur after all my precautionary measures, resulting in a rapid death..unless you're John McClane).
You are on a hike Mephisto. How would you burn the location and clear the bacteria?
Smart hikers would go hiking with a basic survival gear.
Gear:
Extra clothing
Lighter and matches and some kindling to start a fire
Basic First Aid Kit
Survival Knife (Many have a compartment to store matches and kindling and a compass)
Extra Water and Food

I've been wanting to see 127 hours just because Danny Boyle directed it. I'm not a huge fan of James Franco as of now, but I think he has the potential to do some really great things. I'm from the same place that his character is from. He was in our local news for a long time so I really got sick of that guy. Like even when he'd go give some inspirational talk somewhere about his experiences it would be all over our news. But at any rate, I hear the amputation scene is pretty gruesome and that people were passing out at theaters. Was it really that bad?
I didn't think so but I used to watch TLC back when it was the "surgery" channel. The worst part is when he gets to the nerve. It definitely makes you cringe a little. The nerve is something you do not really think of like the bone and muscle.

I suppose it can't be that bad if I'm watching it in the comfort of my own home. I wish Danny Boyle would team up with Alex Garland again. Ooh, maybe to direct the Halo movie!
That'd have to be an amazing script. I wonder sometimes if Halo could be the first actual good game turned movie. That could set the precedent for a good Diablo film perhaps. Either one could just end up being a sci-fi/fantasy Hollywood action schlock.
