Not to bash Blizzard but since Warcraft 3 there hasn't been a successful single player game released by them for 7 years. The original release dates for Wacraft 3: Reign of Chaos where:
July 2, 2002 in the U.S. and July 3rd, 2002 in Europe. 2003 for Japan.
Took them a long time to modify them for other countries as well. The point I'm getting to is this is a bunch of new people working on Diablo 3 and Starcraft 2. Sure there are oldies but that does not mean they are the right guys for the job.
Moving on to strengthen my point Starcraft 2 was split into 3 phases for the single player campaign. The players did not expect this at all. More content but have to pay more. A fair tradeoff? Only time will tell.
Starcraft 2 will no doubt sell millions but that is not what determines whether it's a good single player game or not. That will be determined by the fans.
The same will go for Diablo 3. Many of you won't really care for the single player but thousands of people who play by themselves will. People love the campaigns in these games very much. Lets see if Blizzard can step up to the plate post World of Warcraft.
What would happen if they mess up Single Player? Not much really... Probably 90%+ of people who buy Diablo 3 will play mostly on Battle.net
But if they really mess up the Single Player for Starcraft 2 they'll have reduced profits for the expansions

hes right, if they do somehow fail, then any expansions MIGHT lose profits... a little bit of profits. but it seems like most people in this day in age :P(love sayin that) are gaming online. SP is there, but to a lot of people, its just space on their HDD.

i agree, but I do love single player as well. I usually play in single player first to get a hold of the game before jumping into multi.
I've never much been a single player fan. It's so lonely I am interested in seeing how the Starcraft 2 campaign split or whatever you might want to call it will turn out (whether it was a good or bad decision). I for one never cared about Starcraft single player and don't see that changing for Starcraft 2.

There's actually a lot at stake with every game Blizzard releases. Expectation are everything, and it's quite possible that Blizzard has the highest expectations of any major game developer in the world (along with Valve perhaps). Their reputation needs to be upheld, yet eventually Blizzard will fail. It's inevitable, the question is only how many games it will take until it happens.
And what would happen then? Well, worst case scenario is that Vivendi goes nuts and decides that Blizzard HQ needs to be restructured. Best case scenario is that we get a bad game, and their next game turns out better.
From what I've seen so far, I believe Starcraft 2 will succeed. Whether it will surpass it's predecessor in multiplayer viablility and balance however remains to be seen.
Diablo 3 is still too early for me to say, because let's face it, we hardly know anything about it. There's probably a good chance of success here as well though, given how many Diablo clones there are out there. The market is ready at least.
PlugY for Diablo II allows you to reset skills and stats, transfer items between characters in singleplayer, obtain all ladder runewords and do all Uberquests while offline. It is the only way to do all of the above. Please use it.
Supporting big shoulderpads and flashy armor since 2004.
Blizzard knows what makes a game successful, and they spend a lot of time and money making sure they release something that meets all of the necessary expectations. They won't release something that fails. The worst case scenario is that they release something that is sub-par by Blizzard's standards, but not only is there a low chance of that happening, but even if they did it would probably still be a good game compared to most other companies.

Diablo III will not fail.
Blizzard Entertainment will not fail.
