Wow for once someone gets it. we should be friends
Seriously though, I don't see the big deal. I played PC for two years and I liked servers, I also like matchmaking, either way this game WILL RAPE.
Yeah, someone getting it is just someone not giving a crap. Matchmaking completely suck Freedom out of the window. There is nothing wrong with matchmaking by itself, what is wrong is throwing dedicated servers out of the windows.
Why the fuck they can't do both?
Because the makers are morons, is really my only answer. Even on console, having something closer to dedicated server would be good. In Halo 3, it was requested a lot, a "server list" at least and all that, but nooo, just throw matchmaking and everything is fine, right?
But you guys don't care, so you guys probably deserve to slowly lose everything you never had. You'll still buy things no matter how obvious they are just trying to abuse their customers. So yeah, just keep it, you'll get what you're asking for.
The big deal is that a lack of dedicated servers is having a negative impact on competitive gaming. There are, of course, other reasons, and some good general overviews can be found here and here.
Basically, this is all just a slap in the face to PC users; the series wouldn't be what it is today without the support of PC users.
Also, for you people arguing over the controller vs. keyboard/mouse, take a look at this.
Wow.....just wow. lol i mean no harm and am not being mean, but i can GUARANTEE you that that article is complete crap. try playing counterstrike with a controller and tell me how those head shots are coming for ya...cause ya only have a split second to react. mouse undoubtedly wins, just as the wiimote (if done right) beats stics aswell.

Oh and a good example of this is the fact that when retrod studios made metroid prime 3 they didn't need lock on as the controls are so good, the same is said for PC versions of some shooters (GTA IV in the shooter sections) being easier (as reported by gaming sites) on PC.
LOL maybe i missed it....who knows. its no big deal i just like to have friendly arguments :P. Either way i doubt ill be getting MW2, but if it does AMAZING then its a POSSIBILITY for me, although I'm much more looking forward to BF BC 2
Well, I think all the article was trying to point out was that controllers and keyboards are pretty much equal - both have their strengths and weaknesses. All it really comes down to is what the player is comfortable with.
I think Modern Warfare 2 will do well on console, but I'm not really sure about PC. Like I said before, Infinity Ward basically slapped PC gamers in the face with this announcement - most people I know that have cancelled their MW2 preorders are now, like you, putting that money toward Battlefield: Bad Company 2. I can't say that I blame them.
I was more excited for BF:BC2 to begin with, but i figured id give COD a try if it did decent, but I have too much to play as it is lol, and with borderlands just released im content until BC2
To be honest, I haven't actually played any Call of Duty aside of the first two. I have, however, sat with my fiance while he played through Call of Duty 4 on PC, and I will say that the single player was amazing - the multiplayer, not so much. It was so obvious that the game was just a console port. Modern Warfare 2 now looks like it'll be the same thing (great single player, bad multiplayer).
Hopefully B:BC2 will live up to expectations. If not, well... that's going to suck.
Yeah, someone getting it is just someone not giving a crap. Matchmaking completely suck Freedom out of the window.
Exactly how does matchmaking do this? You can party up with your friends and still play with them, vote on maps, search for a certain gametype, etc.

Infinity Ward did this because of all of the hackers and pirates, you guys only have yourselves to blame. Plus it will cut down on lag.

Or because they don't want their game illegally downloaded by hundreds of thousands of people. But hey what do I know?

Exactly what is so bad about dedicated servers anyway? I personally enjoy matchmaking, less lag, less time consuming.

You'll still buy things no matter how obvious they are just trying to abuse their customers. So yeah, just keep it, you'll get what you're asking for.
By having dedicated servers you can choose servers that are closer to you and have lag free games. Where as with matchmaking it chooses for you and can be a poor chooser. Also with dedicated servers you can have mods, you cannot with matchmaking.
And yet another reason is because you can't play with your friends on the same server. Being able to favorite servers and play with the same people is very nice. Having options is a good thing. I would have about 2-3 servers that I would play on everyday in CoD4 and I became good friends with everyone on those servers. Can't do that with matchmaking unless you friend everyone you meet and try to join the same games.
When they announced this terrible move, this game went from a first day for sure buy, to a not even going to touch it with a ten foot pole. Bitch slapping your customers is not a good way to sell a game.
I would also like to point out that the petition has 140,000 signatures. So its obvious that a "few" people are upset by this.
Also, there is always a workaround and the end result will be :
1. Less people will buy the game because the dedicated servers will not be supported. This means less money in the pockets of the distributor and the developer.
2. A bunch of pissed off pc gamers that have been loyal to the franchise are treated as hackers and stealers when they would gladly buy the game.
3. Removing a unique pc feature will have the opposite effect on the consumers who will feel no remorse in copying and sharing the game since it virtually is the same thing as the console version.
Exactly how does matchmaking do this? You can party up with your friends and still play with them, vote on maps, search for a certain gametype, etc.
You don't know the difference between set servers and matchmaking? There is no actual "place" to go to. Its completely different and don't get me started when it comes to mod.

Seriously, how pathetic of an excuse can you or they find? Hackers and pirates? I'm sure they'll find a way anyway, thats just dumb for anyone to think otherwise. You always needed something to authenticate yourself online, even if thats only a cd-key, and that always worked.
Steam, TF2, CSS are the perfect examples. Are there pirates and hackers? Sure. But its quite the meaningless.
And about actual -hacks-, matchmaking or normal protections like Valve does is exactly the same god damn thing. I'd argue matchmaking can be worse, because you have less control over where you are going and can't be sure of any place that is well administered.

See above. The only slightly viable reason is pirating, and I don't see how its going to stop it. Games that laugh in the people's face to try to slow down pirating got shit back in their face. Look at EA and DRM. They -WILL- pay for what they are doing. In this day and age, you have to encourage people to buy their product and respect them, not laugh in their face to stop pirating, because that actually make people pirate them more.
But what the fuck, right. They never learn.

Less lag? Don't make me laugh. Ignorance, much.

Footage from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare2 leaked onto the Internet yesterday, and if you thought the lack of dedicated PC servers were the big controversy in regards to this game, you're in for a huge surprise. The leaked gameplay footage reveals that you'll be able to play part of the game as a terrorist. Update: The footage has been pulled from CNN's iReport site as well. Heavy spoilers ahead, obviously. The footage has since been pulled from YouTube, but part of it is still up on CNN's iReport site. In the level (reportedly the beginning of the game), the player is with a group of men who murder innocent civilians in an airport. The level seems to consist primarily of capping innocent people, including the clearly injured who are trying in vain to hobble away as you shoot them in the back. This is where CNN's video ends. Based on other internet reports, after the airport killing spree, the group then exit to the tarmac where they pass a pile of dead bodies, and shoot some cops. Eventually, the main terrorist, Makarov, murders the player with a shot to the head. It's strong stuff.
When asked if the footage would be in the game, Activision released a statement to the press, saying:
?Yes it is. The scene establishes the depth of evil and the cold bloodedness of a rogue Russian villain and his unit. By establishing that evil, it adds to the urgency of the player?s mission to stop them.
?Players have the option of skipping over the scene. At the beginning of the game, there are two ?checkpoints? where the player is advised that some people may find an upcoming segment disturbing. These checkpoints can?t be disabled.
?Modern Warfare 2 is a fantasy action game designed for intense, realistic game play that mirrors real life conflicts, much like epic, action movies. It is appropriately rated 18 for violent scenes, which means it is intended for those who are 18 and older.?
I predict an uproar from certain members of the excitable media. I predict semi-accurate headlines will proclaim: "New Game Has Players Take The Role of Terrorists!" while ignoring the fact that this is, essentially, a cut-scene where you control a character, and the scene itself doesn't glamorize terrorism: After all, you are betrayed by your own leader, who is so evil, he shoots his own men.
We don't really know the context of the level either: Perhaps the player is infiltrating the terrorist group and has to participate or blow his cover. Maybe the main character is under the influence of mind-altering drugs. Maybe it's a dream sequence. But no matter what utility it might serve in Modern Warfare 2's plot, it's a disturbing thing to watch; I can't imagine how disturbing it would be to play. While I'm all for artistic freedom in games, even I gotta shake my head a little at how far this goes.
Although Modern Warfare 2 is scheduled for a November 10th release, You have to wonder whether this particular level will end up in the finished game. I give it a 50/50 shot, honestly, depending upon the intensity of the controversy surrounding this leaked footage.
Personally I don't think it is a very big deal, I mean, in games like GTA IV you can mow people down and if Fallout 3 you can blow up a WHOLE FRIGGIN TOWN and it never sparked this much controversy, Hell even MSNBC did a report on it. Personally, its not gonna stop me from buying the game, as a matter of fact I will probably play this mission and not give 2 shits about it because its a freakin game. Can't wait till 11.10.09
The game pissed me off. The nline leaked footage liek yesterday relle upset me. Why because in cod 4 i get like 30 kill streaks sometimes more. Sadly now if you get a 25 its a nuke and you win the game. Id get my airstrike make he best of it get a heli then hide as it kills enough ppl to get me a frikken nuke then nuke everyone. ITs going ot be soooo easy to win now its not even funny.

Not even Death will save you from Diablo Bunny's Cuteness!
I don't see the problem with playing a terrorist in a video game - especially if it's only a starting mission to show how things happen on the other side of the story.
Basically it's no different from having a chapter in a book be from a villain's point of view.
Seriously? Wait until the game is out and you've played it. It seems to me they've added quite a few things to make sure people are more evenly matched. I'm mainly talking about death streaks here.
What do you know! Someone who doesn't judge the game before they haven't even played it! Looks like me and you would be good friends
