After reading the thread with all the Wirt hate, I just had to play D1. Even though I never liked it. And now I'm stuck
It's simply amazing, I just had to give it down to King Leoric. Looking for spellbooks, never knowing what you'll find. Fun quests, and actual quest rewards at that as well. Bying stat potions!
Of course, my first sorcerer got beaten pretty bad upon entering hell, as I didn't really have anything besides firebolt and lightning, but that's about to change. Now I'm on my second try, and I'm about to stone curse the shit out of Zhar. I can't believe I didn't play this earlier.
Just wanted to say that. And yay for my first post in the D1 forum :sorcerer:
PlugY for Diablo II allows you to reset skills and stats, transfer items between characters in singleplayer, obtain all ladder runewords and do all Uberquests while offline. It is the only way to do all of the above. Please use it.

Diablo 1 is definitely one of my favorite games. If it had as good of a multilayer as Diablo 2 I would probably never stop playing it.
Make sure to play through it several times on single player because all the quests are fun, but they are randomized. The first few times I played through I never got the butcher quest, and then when I finally got it I was thinking "ah its only on level 2, it can't be that hard." But by the time I heard "ahh fresh meat" I was dead.

Yeah, I'm doing a second run now. I need to get mana shield or I will die so bad further down. Still haven't found it though
Oh, and the Butcher is seriously overhyped. King Leoric is much cooler.

I think I would find King Leoric cooler if I didn't have memorable experiences with The Butcher. For example when I first got the game I was probably 8 or so and I thought the butcher was the scariest monster, I was not expecting somebody that hard on level 2. Also when I first tried The Hell Mod I was not aware that the butcher is on level 1 and that he has over 9000 health. So when I realized it was a lost cause, I went with my usual strategy and hid behind a closed door, but I almost shat myself when the butcher opened a door (he can't do that in vanilla diablo 1). So I mainly like the butcher because he scares the shit out of me.
Wirt can actually be pretty useful earlier on in the game. His biggest problem though is how slowly he moves merchandise. Either he takes forever to show you something new, or you have to buy whatever he has just to see what's next in his line of goods. It's pretty awful really. I've occasionally relied on him to get stat rings or ammys. I think I even found a nice Bow of the Sky once from him. Something with like 15 all attributes.
And of course many of us hated Wirt cause he's a shit-faced little red-headed bastard. Plus he's clear the fuck away from everything else. In The Hell mod they stuck him and Adria much closer to everything else and wisely stuck Gillian, the most useless character, farther away.
I also agree with your sentiments about The Butcher. He did scare the crap out of me when I first played the game at 16. But King Leoric's tomb was just as scary. It's a whole level just for him, he raises skeletons, and if you die down there, he makes you one too.

WHAT THE FUCK DID I TELL YOU PHROZEN!?!?
"No Zhar, I hate Diablo I, you do that section of the wiki. Lolz."
"Phrozen, I daresay you are mistaken, Diablo I is a fantastic game, and helped build the lore behind Diablo II, if you'd only give it a-"
"I SAID NO ZHAR, BOW TO ME!!"
Exactly how our conversation went down.
Anywho, Diablo I is still definitely one of my favorite games. Lore behind it was incredible, atmosphere was just as amazing, simple gameplay, but fun.

But isn't be supposed to be able to sell some really good gear if you're lucky? I mean, why else would one bother with him?

Are you crazy? Game manuals are the best potty reading ever. I also really loved the Starcraft manual. I read that many a times while making a dookie. Sometimes I'd even just stay on the potty and keep reading after I was all finished. That's right. You WANTED to know that about me!
As for Wirt, yeah like I said you can get lucky with what he has sometimes. But I'll often find just as good stuff with Griswold. Also, I recommend finding a weapon with knockback. Knockback was super annoying in D2, but in D1 it can be so useful. Especially with a ranged weapon. I personally love the Rogue. You up her Dex as high as it can go and get a nice bow, you're all set!
... Shit you not (lol, pun), I've got the Starcraft manual right beside my shitter as well.
Swear to god, I'm taking a picture of this tommorrow in case you don't believe me.
Had the Warcraft III manual for a while too, the lore based one (not the strategy guide, that guide was terrible reading) which rocked. But I lost it :(.
Siay speaks the truth, knockback was the shit in D1.
If you really want to see it kick ass, get yourself Griswold's Edge (it's a quest, level 9-ish). Sword with knockback, works absolute wonders once you find it. Warriors best friend.
edit: Oh yeah.... Vista.

I really don't know what to say. I'm stuck with Vista for awhile. Unless that what's his face releases a new patch for The Hell that isn't anti-Vista. God, it's embarrassing as time goes on to even still have Vista.

Pff, I don't need that. Just got a Dreamflange for my Sorcerer yesterday. Sweet weapon.

That's might actually a problem with Hellfire itself. The 1.01 patch for it doesn't work on 64-bit systems.

Well I can play The Hell just fine on my computer. But we can't seem to get multiplayer working. And there are all sorts of third party programs we tried. And they often are the ones that have problems with Vista. Meeeeee!
Im glad you got into D1. Its my favorite game EVA!!!! I love Diablo1 more than life itself lol. Hell just today I got on battle.net in D1 made a game and did some dungeon killing.

It's nice to see that you liked Diablo 1. It's a very addictive and cool game and I enjoy a lot killing skeletons in Leoric's Tomb and The Chamber of Bones? (can't remember if it was called like that) I can't wait to battle Leoric again in Diablo 3
