So, in D2 the escape key was well, key to playing HC. Get surrounded by cows, esc. Get smacked by some stygian dolls, esc. I was curious...is this also an option in DIII. If not I feel quite a few people are going to lose a few more chars. then normal. Anyone have an answer?
I never used this method in d2 unless I lagged out, and even thenci recall using alt f4 instead.
When you use esc to leave a game when outside Tristan in the beta however, I believe the countdown is 10 seconds. There is an actual timer on your screen, would be painful to watch that count down hoping to get out in time hahahah
Town recall is still around 6 seconds and channeled, if hit you are interrupted.
Potions are on a 20 or 30 second timer, not exactly sure what it is.
Best to have way way more of a back up plan then esc!
The one thing that may define hardcore experiences are the boss events.
Currently you can not town recall out of the skeleton king event (and I don't think you can zone out either but forgot to check )
I can just imagine doing a do or die boss encounter with 4 people and 3 die and don't leave the game forcing you to solo down a boss with 3.5x hps or die!
Will see if they allow event zone outs, if not they will be crux points again much like earlier duriel kills when low level in diablo 2

I don't know about you, but to me that sounds awesome!
It will most probably take a player that's experienced in the game, and knows the ins and outs of the way every monster and boss handles before they make it to inferno.
Just stopping by to inform that while there is no pause, ESC-leave game is still possible.. somewhat! Although the delay is 10 seconds so it's not really useful..
But basically you can click up leave game, and while the counter is ticking you are free to do anything and it will exit you instantly when the 10 seconds has passed, unless you cancel, wheather you are in combat or not.
Sooo, if you are really extreme you could "predict" when you might need to exit (10 seconds in advance of course) and use it that way.. again though, it's not really that viable and would be kinda obnoxious to deal with but it may have its uses.
Remember you'd get in a group at lvl 1-3 with a few other untwinked people, and kill andy around lvl 8 because you skip all the non essential quests? One person dies, you have 5 people left. You make it to mephisto around lvl 15 because someone grabbed the wp. Someone gets 1-shotted and everyone leaves. Then you are stuck trying to find a game appropriate for your level....
Personally, I like the fact that it is a bit harder to instantly leave a fight. Maybe it will force people to slow down a bit, do the optional quests, and clear those random dungeons to make sure you are at a reasonable lvl before you try to kill xy or z.
That being said.... *whispers* alt f4 the new esc exit?
All these escape hardcore death threads makes me wonder. You play hardcore to give you a challenge but instead of facing it, everyone just press escape and cheat yourself out of a situation.
You bring up a good point. I agree with you. It is hypocritical. And I've done it a bunch of times. But, if you play hardcore and say you haven't ever escaped, you are either the 1%, or just plain lying. It is cheap to be able to do it, so I am glad in a way that Blizzard is removing the feature...
A defense for D2 escaping: PK'ers, MSLE, LAG
In D3 it seems like the issue of PK'ers has been resolved. It seems since announcement of D3 in June '08', insanely over-powered monsters like the MSLE should be pretty well combed through... Lag spikes will still happen, but I think things have come a long way since dial-up

do you mean by do anything like using skills? this will make Serenity "3sec and heal or 5sec" + inner sanctuary "8sec out of reach + 40% damage reduction" really useful
even with the long cooldowns they have which makes 2 of your slots useless 99% of the time, you will find alot of people using builds like that if viable.

Yes you can use spells and do whatever you like while the logout window is counting down as long as you don't press cancel. So yes, having "OH SHIT" buttons that protect you for the 10 seconds it takes to logout could prove useful in hardcore.

Yes they are and it is good. Using esc to save your character was maximum lame. I only did it once and I ended up dieing like a day later anyway.
A lot more hardcore friendly skills available than in diablo 2 tho.
