1. The main difference between season and non-season are a few exclusive items (one per class) and a new gem. While the items are usually not that important but rather "gimicky" (barring some exceptions), the new gems are usually quite powerful. The main *reason* why people play season, though, is that you get a "fresh start". All those things combined, more and more people are leaving the "non-season" game mode and switching to seasons, which means it's easier to find people to play there. I strongly suggest starting on seasons, you'll have caught up with everything on "non-season" in a few days (a few hours of in-game playtime). Also, there's something called "season journey" and "conquests" which gives you goals to strife for and makes the gameplay a bit more enjoyable as opposed to non-season where there's no such thing to aim for.
2. Yeah, see point 1.
3. When the season ends, everything is merged, and your stash contents will be mailed to you.
TL;DR: It's up to you what game mode to choose, there are still people that prefer non-season. But as someone who has always entirely been again seasons, Blizzard has created so many incentives to play season and is essentially killing non-season a bit more with every patch.

I am looking to start playing D3 again. I have never played in the new Season system; so I have a few questions about Seasons--
1. What is the advantage of playing a Seasonal Character over my old main?
2. Are there any loot/gear or anything unique that drops on Season Chars only?
3. What happens to Season Chars and the crafting patterns they unlock when the Season ends?
TLDR--
Why should I make a Season character instead of continuing to build up my old main?
