So I have used the RMAH and the GAH over the past month to get my Barb geared to where act 4 inferno is now easy. I play a tank build, with around 25k dps, 1200 all resist, 12k armor, 4k health per second, 72k health, 32% block. Took around 25 bucks and tens of millions of gold to do it. A 5 stack diablo kill is now easy for me and takes about 30 mins. Which is a big change from my first diablo kill which took 9 hours of attempts in shit gear, to finally get an kill where I litearly had to be perfect. So that's where I stand now.
I mainly sold things on the GAH with an ocasional sale to my Battle.net funds. I just created a paypal account, linked my bank account, and put 10 decent items up for around 4 bucks a pop. If they all sell, take 1 for the auction charge, 15% for the paypal transfer, so in the end thats around 25 bucks.
I know making money off of the RMAH is going to entirely rely on my luck with drops. However I'm wondering, should I have decent luck, is the RMAH actively used enough to actually make some money on the side on my down times from work.
I'm up to $416 (after bliz and paypal cuts). People are still actively buying things on the RMAH.
Since patch 1.0.4 I've made most of my money on set items and good weapons/ammys. I haven't had much luck selling anything else. My set items typically sell pretty fast for $30-60 depending on the rolls. Even more if you get a really awesome roll I'm sure.
It depends entirely on the items. Not just stats either.
You could have a very nice chest piece, that would sell for (random number) 3m on the GAH, but because it's not a ring or an amulet, people might not buy it. A friend of mine sells only weapons and rings/amulets on the RMAH, and they sell pretty often. He's even sold a few rings for 30$ a pop. Armor, however, he just sells on the GAH.
Either way, I'd say if you don't need/want the item yourself, try and sell it. If you make some cash, great, if not, sell it for gold.
