I've never personally played D2 and am considering getting it before D3. I've played torchlight so I know the genre but I want to make sure I completely understand how awesome the Diablo series is so I don't get hyped into D3 and I'd like to see some reviews of the game before I purchase it. I plan to play for about 64 hours, in 2 weeks.
My main question is, does D2 have gameplay that would be solid right now? Obviously the graphics aren't modern and so it falls to the gameplay to make the game worth it. While I know it was revolutionary for the action-rpg genre do you think its gameplay would be enough to suck you in today?
Please give me a detailed response, I've seen thousands of "ITS FUCKING AWESOME" posts but I'm looking more toward why it's still awesome today?
diablo 2 is pretty much diablo 3 without the streamlined skill book and bars at the bottom of the screen, also u have to customize ur char via skills and stats instead of it being spoonfed to you. So if you have played the beta you know how d3 will be, if u haven't d2 is a very good approximation of a harder version of d3.
Also if you want to play diablo 2 you would have needed more then 3 days to fully appreciate it. and you would need to play online as that as definetly more fun then single player.
Still go play it and have some fun playing around with some of the classes who knows u might get hooked like we did once
Like volrod said, you will probably not enjoy it too much with only 3 days to play. To get good (and by good i mean perfect, because every single point matters in every single spec until level 90) you need to hold off on skill points until you reach a certain level, to put into specific skills etc. Overall i do not think you should base D3 off of D2 with only a few days to play it
I plan to play it for 2 weeks to give people time to get a good feel for D3 would that be enough? I'm on summer vacation from university and only taking 1 class so I have plenty of hours to put in. Lets say around 64 hours?

Yes, D2 was punishing when it came to building your character. But I think D3 will be insanely more difficult at the end of Inferno than D2 ever was. E.g. in D2, 1 Hammerdin could solo Hell Baal with 8 players. That will not happen in D3 Inferno.

Honestly, I wouldn't bother playing Diablo II with 3 coming out in a few days. Everything looks and feels rather dated and there is probably very little you would take away from playing it for a few days, or even a couple of weeks. It was amazing in its prime, but that has long since passed. If you are interested in the story, there are better and quicker ways to get it.
I will give you the generic ITS FUCKING AWESOME. I also believe it would hold up today...sort of. Gamers today move toward quicker and easier setups for games. If you look at games today you have checkpoints all over the places, save spots etc back then you had 5 lives, get to the final boss cant beat him? Start over. Diablo is sort of the same way with a different aspect. It is unforgiving (making you restart characters over and over) because you selected a few skills wrong, these wrong skill placements ultimately would cause your demise in harder difficulties. The gameplay itself is amazing, you can use a sorceress and teleport throwing orbs of frosts into dozens of demons, be a barbarian and leap in and whirlwind them to shreds. I still to this day go back and play sometimes (well, i guess D3 is coming out...) It is enough to make me level my few favorite characters, a frost mage, hammerdin, bowazon, elemental druid.
like i said I think it can still hold up, but needed a few things fixed which they fixed in Diablo 3. IMO, you can play diablo 2, but don't expect to love it ASAP. You need to hit at least level 30 to start appreciating classes. I would personally just buy Diablo 3 rather than D2, because although D2 is great, diablo 3 is coming out. D3 will be fixing out dated mechanics such as having to make multiple of one character,(IE : Frozen Orb, Blizzard, Fireball, Meteor, Lightning, Melee, Hydra, Fire/Frost, Fire/Lightning Sorceresses) Unforgiving skill and stat trees, and a terrible trading system.
Edit: To the person saying D3 will be much harder. I believe someone will eventually solo Inferno with 1 character with 4 characters in a group...Diablo 2 was hard as hell, i could barely get past act 2 offline without significant farming because duriel was too damn hard. After YEARS of getting Imba items, perfecting strats and skill trees people were finally able to dominate the game with the most imbalanced spec? I never would have guesses >.>

keep in mind that was with the best gear..if you went about the game solo, and didnt just buy duped runes and me all the best rw's, it's not that easy

D1 and D2 were awesome for their time. But honestly, I'm not sure how old you are, but picking it up now will kind of be lackluster. Personally I started playing when I was about 12, so it was reallllly cool =) But it takes awhile to appreciate the things like the item hunt, trading items with other players, doing baal runs until 4am, realizing a zod rune is never going to drop for you and buying one off the interwebs =P
They were awesome games, and you should give them a go sometime just to have tried them.

On a hammerdin? You bet it is. I played through hell on single player no mods or anything and it's not too hard. Monsters still hurt, you still die, but the major thing is you don't have immunity problems with magic damage (99.9% good). Since I played on single player, I didn't have access to many runewords that were "the best gear" but it doesn't really matter with that skill and synergies.

Yeah that's true. I still think that even with the best gear, Inferno sounds like it will continue to be more challenging than anything D2 had to offer. Actually, maybe apart from Uber Diablo. That was fairly insane.

I'm 19 so fairly old. Not enough to find any new nostalgia. Like I said, just played torchlight, found it a lot of fun but nothing to spend days on. Multiplayer would change that I'm sure.
Eh I'm in the mood for an old fashioned HARD action rpg, hope D3 has that then. . .

this made me chuckle also it made sense if u read the whole thing in context not just those 10 or so words :/ all in all u guys suck
Haha, come on do we suck that much? Even though I quoted you out of context, I at least addressed your issues in the bit under the image.
like i said i found it funny but now people will jsut see that and be like WTF is this volrod guy derping I DONT LIKE TO DERP, and fair enough you did adress my issues so im happy.... kinda.... sorta
Its to late to get a real taste of why everyone loved diablo 1 and 2. I fall asleep when I play single player yet played d2 for 1000's of hours on b.net. Its all about co-op,trading etc and all of that is mostly gone. I say jump into d3 head first monday night.
OP, despite my shenanigans in this thread, I never actually answered your question.
I was completely addicted to D2 (as probably most of Diablofans members were :P), but I think there were many features of the game mechanics that I don't appreciate anymore.
The main ones, as everyone else has mentioned:
The brutally unforgiving character building process (skills/stats). This was probably the worst system, because to make an actually good character, you had to have prior knowledge of how to level your character properly. You also needed to know what gear you were going to use, which is impossible to know on your first play through. This has been removed in D3.
It was very very difficult to "get rich", compared to other online players, if that's what you're interested in. You had to rely on good drops, which rarely/never happened. There was no cumulative process, unlike in D3 where you can save up gold and buy your dream item one day. So there was a big divide between people with godly gear, and people with nothing.
As for the atmosphere and storyline, I think that's something that was best experienced back when the game came out. I think a lot of us would be disappointed to go back and play D2, because we have a lot of nostalgic memories, but after seeing D3 it just won't live up to our memories in the same way.
So of course, play it if you want, it's definitely a classic, but I don't think there are many really good reasons right now, other than seeing what all the fuss was about.

Jesus fuck, are you a troll or are you seriously just dumb? Diablo 2 was not hard in any way, if you found D2 hard I feel sorry for you. It was a good game and it still is, cant argue with that, but it's NOT a hard game. You're the one doing the sucking here.
Cant see where i said that d2 was hard i just said it was harder then what i have seen of d3. dunno where you got it into your head that i said it was hard. Personally i never found it hard at all.

I was playing with a friend (which always make it better) and the excitement of finding a better sword, even at low levels, was still there.
