@BashiokFor D3: If I start a game on the last quest of Act 4, will the bosses in the first three acts be alive to kill in that same game?
The reason I've thought about the quest system so much recently is because of all of the discussion surrounding Nephalem Valor Buff and boss farming for loot.
The belief is that:
1. You will not have any waypoints further along in the story than the current quest that you are working on. For example, if I start a game in A1, I will not have any future waypoints even if I have already beaten all four Acts on that difficulty.
2. If you start a quest in a later Act, all previous bosses will already be dead in that game.
This causes a bit of a dilemma for quick boss farming in Diablo 3. To me, it seems as though you would have to really sit in a game for a while, killing A1 boss, then going through A2 story > A2 boss, A3 story > A3 boss, A4 story > A4 boss.
I realize this isn't Diablo 2 or Diablo 2.5 and that this is a different game... This isn't a complaining or griping thread. I'm really just trying to get a feel for others' opinions on the matter or see if anyone has gotten confirmation that this is indeed how the system will work.
Which, by the way, I'm assuming is the case since it would be kind of silly if we could just start on A4 and work our way back by quickly teleporting to all of the previous bosses.
Huh, that's a good question... I guess you will have previous bosses, though it doesn't work well with 30-60 min buff duration. I think we'll only be able to assume after they announce the final version of the buff, if they are planning to before release.
I believe the system works just as you describe. In beta, you never have future waypoints if you start an earlier quest. If you start a later quest, all sub bosses are dead already, but the standard mobs and elite packs are still there. Theoretically you could then maximize your farming potential by using your waypoints to go to common elite spawns, farm them, then quickly go to the boss Waypoint to kill that boss.
I don't think you need to be able to kill multiple bosses quickly, then it just becomes like Diablo 2 where you farm the bosses over and over again in one sitting and that's what Blizzard is trying to avoid. This way you can sit down, pick an act or section of an act to farm, and have fun with it.

^This. Find an Act/ quest etc that you particularly enjoy and play through it, then continue on if you want or do it again. Love how it is beneficial to play the whole game as opposed to farming bosses.
Question about the "bosses" what constitutes a boss? By this i mean do mini-bosses like Leroic count? or "end of act bosses" only?
Good question. It's highly probably that the Skeleton King would count as a "boss" using this mechanic. I assume that because, as of right now, he drops minimal loot for the effort it takes to kill him after you've killed him the first time.
This would mean that farming an entire act and taking out all the sub-bosses on the way would possibly be the best course of action . Of course this means someone will find the best act to farm for the most efficient method, but that always happens anyway when theory crafting gets involved. For the rest of us, however, we can still farm where ever we want and not feel punished for it.
I like that picking an act or quest gets you started there as if you never beaten or gotten waypoints past that point. It promotes playing through the act to farm again rather than boss rush.
There will always be people trying to min/max and find the fastest way to farm for gear. Although, i think the player base is just so excited to have the game that you will see more of people playing through larger parts of the game just for pure enjoyment rather than the efficiency of it. Atleast for a while.
Also, events and random mini dungeons are incentive for me to go out and explore when replaying. You never know what you might find and what's going to drop!
