To sum it up, basically he said right now there aren't any death penalties but that could change in normal mode. But he doesn't see it happening.
I mean death penalties do suck that's for sure I'm not denying that. But I think death should result in SOME sort of desire to... not WANT to die. I mean if there's no impending desire to stay alive then would that lead to a kind of boring adventure? Yes there's hardcore mode but that death penalty is a wee bit to extreme for me lol. I mean if you are going to wipe on a boss, sure that's annoying because you wasted all that time getting to him and then fighting him only to get owned. Only to instant spawn somewhere probably close by without any consequence. Hm... am I missing something here or does that seem a tad bit too forgiving?
I was thinking the same thing. Loss of experience and gold in D2 was an acceptable loss in my opinion, why would they soften that punishment?
I for one don't see the loss of gold being a good idea in D3 if its going to be as valuable as they hint it will be. But experience loss, don't see a problem with that. Hell, if you die it only makes the end-game longer lol!
If gold is valuable, then that leaves more incentive to not die. It would also act as a gold sink. And it is definitely not as harsh as dying in hardcore, which is the only other option.
So we have two choices, die and suffer a wasted minute of your life running back to the boss
OR
die and suffer a wasted hour of your life doing more runs to gain back the experience and gold you lost.
I know that 1 little minute won't be a bother for anyone, and having no consequence for dying will probably lead to a more reckless and suicidal playing style. Not so fun in my opinion.
If all they do is make it so when you die, you respawn without your gear (like in D2) then I'm happy. Honestly, my ego is enough to keep me caring about dieing. The loss of gold and experience don't mean much too me. Besides, the loss of experience was only a huge issue real late game, when levels took HUGE amounts of xp, and I'm pretty sure you never lost gold out of your stash, so these punishments weren't that big for most people anyway.
In Normal you never even lost any experience, you only lost gold. Now we all know D2 gold was pretty useless, so a death in Normal was pretty negligible then as well. Now you lose durability, which basically means you lose gold. Since gold seems to be much more valuable in this game it actually is a bigger penalty than before. Assuming that repair costs scale with items value, it might end up being quite a lot of precious gold coins.
The only thing they removed is the corpse run, which was an unfriendly mechanic. If you died somewhere with all your gear, how were you supposed to survive there with none at all? Depending on the area it could result in even more deaths, leading to more aggravating corpse runs. Instead, the game gives you the option to go right into the fray once more. Your equipment is damaged, which might result into actually breaking mid-dungeon, but you don't have to run around like a headless chicken hoping the enemies stay away from your corpse long enough.
Edit:
The loss of experience was pretty unforgiving at the later stages of the game. Without any gear you would end up losing a lot of experience. They could put that mechanic in at higher difficulties, since having no corpse run makes this a much more forgiving penalty.
Really? I thought I read that somewhere not long ago. Hmm, if it isn't than my point is moot. There should be some penalty for dying, just not severe enough to ragequit.
Inevitably we’ll all die sometime (hopefully the hardcore people won’t do it often). In death you don’t appear in town but in the nearest checkpoint. You also have all of your gear (will take durability damage upon death) so there won’t be any more corpse runs. There still is an experience penalty for dying, though.
It's from the 'what do we know already' thread, so I don't know the official source this came from.
Hmmm.. I think that in normal play, we're actually not supposed to die a lot. There will be several mechanics (health orbs, potions) to keep us alive. Dying also abruptly halts the action, which is something they want to avoid. Hence the fact that you can run back into the fight fairly quickly and easily is understandable and benefits game fun. If the game is really that fast-paced, the fact that you died alone is punishment enough: your buddies go on and you're missing part of the action. Even in single player it's just frustrating, so I don't think any additional punishment is needed. People won't be dying for fun.

Or maybe there aren't any death penalties because health globes aren't meeting certain standards and there are A LOT of deaths in their tests. Food for thought.

Possibly, but I don't think so. If they'd be aware that health orbs don't meet their standards, it would just take a bit of tweaking with a couple of values to remedy that. They could easily increase the drop chance and percentage of health restored if necessary.
I think what we should keep from these last Bashiok posts is that:
1. The death penalties aren't final yet.
2. Even if we have some as they were in Diablo II (experience/gold loss) it wont be in such incredible amounts as we had before.
I also edited the post in that other thread with the current information. Since it's not final, it's not on it

it is called hardcore, and you play SMARTLY not gung-ho rush-hour jackie chan time, die rspawn and do it all again.
like bashiok said, they want players to think smarter about how they play, and if they keep dying, then they are doing it wrong, and will learn how to do it right when they get sick of constantly dying.
in hardcore, you start with nothing, and whilst you can die with something, its not the end of the world. you let your guard/concentration down and paid the ultimate price for it.
i think this will actually make MORE people play hardcore, or just accept the super-softcore mode theyve created.
What part of , "I PREFER A MODE THAT I CAN PVP IN" Do people not understand? lol.
I'm not one for too harsh punishments (removing XP, for example, is too much).
To be frank though, if durability lost is in like it is in WoW, its enough for me: every death when raiding would cost me a bit of hard earned gold, meaning I don't want to die.
Absolutely no penalty in a world where you respawn instead of loading back to a previous save/checkpoint is the dumbest thing that can ever happen. You have to be an absolutely clueless and stupid developer to go that way. Some form of penalty is an absolute necessity.
At the same time, ruining people's hard work in a single strike is too much. That means loss of XP is NOT welcome. Hardcore is another cup entirely, and is a choice. I enjoy hardcore, but there's a line: you play hardcore, or you don't. When you don't, you need reasons not to die, without something that makes you lose too much.

No I enjoy pvp too much to tempt fate like that. But that's just me.

we don't even know if you take a durability hit if you die. Unless they said something about that. I never heard it.
