I dont know what blizzards plan for duel wielding in Diablo 3, but I certainly hope they do it right,
Duel wielding should give you two attacks, ie you can attack twice as fast, not just alternate your attack between the two weapons you have, that is completely useless.
Now im not saying the barbarian should have a lame bird flapping his wings duel weapon attack, in some dorky attempt to scissor the enemies head off, but seriously, two weapons should = two attacks, and ideally attack at their own attack speeds, animation might be kind of weird, but I dont expect them to go that far animation wise,
but proper duel wielding is something that needs to be implemented,
in fact, if someone can post this on the real diablo forum id appreciate it, as I dont have a diablo 2 Cd key.
There are a serious of problem in this kind of implementation. If every dual wielding hit represents a double attack, then, they will necesserely have two times more dps then a barbarian with sword/shield. A simple weapon choice will represent a 100% damage variation, wich is bad for the game since the classes and build shouldn't have such high dps variation once diablo is a game were all classes and builds must be dps efficient.
In D2 dual wield was totally viable because they added special skills. Double Swing was extremely powerfull, stronger then any other single target barbarian skill.
They could implement this by adding a small bonus attack speed (like 20%) and a bunch of skills for dual wielding.
They have already reworked most of the combat system for things like that, new modern defense system, etc. Why would they not redesign Dual Wielding? Especially when its designed different in WoW as well?
And yeah, the way to do it is probably simply to not change the speed of an attack, but when you add an off-hand weapon, you rapidly strike with it between each attacks. There could be varying timings for that depending on the weapon's speeds.
To balance that, you apply penalties to the off-hand weapon same as in WoW. If you're curious, the penalties are:
-Off-hand only deals 50% damage.
-While dual wielding, each weapon have a base chance to miss of 24% instead of 5%.
Now I'm not talking about using the exact same penalties at all. You just get the idea: dual wield can have its set of simple penalties that balances its damage.
You dont need to lecture me on Duel wielding Ivaron
Im in Belegarth medieval combat society, and my preferred style is "florentine" which is basically duel wielding weapons, I know all about how to attack with two weapons ^.^,
I didnt necessarily mean swing both weapons at the exact same time, one attack quickly following the other is fine, or perhaps some stab swing combos, I just didnt want to see some lame alternating attack that attacks at the same speed a single weapon would, making it pointless to duel wield.
I kind of forgot about Double swing
but im glad to hear they will be implementing new mechanics for it,
penalties are a given, I just hope they dont get too carried away, 25% less chance to hit sounds a bit harsh, maybe just 25% for the off hand, I dont see how having a sword instead of a shield in my left would screw with my primary attacks chance to hit.
