I think they should remove the respec system. Sure it may sound like a cool feature but in my opinion a lot of the fun of d2 was coming up with new build theorys and trying them out. Sometimes you have success and other times complete failure... it's a learning process. Also there will be no pointing in having multiple characters of the same class with different builds. With the respec system all you will have to do is get different gears sets and respec when you want to try a new playstyle. lame
It can either enhance replay or decrease it, depends on the person. Some people will screw up, have a bad experience and just quit. Others will start over.
Some people will just respec to fix minor errors, others will respec as much as they're allowed for different personal gain.
Besides it's not even 100% confirmed yet as far as I've heard.
If you still want to have 10 characters- go ahead- just collect the gear separately- because you were going to do it if the respecc wasn't there anyway :P. Also keep in mind that D3 devs want to change loot and gear so that we can have some more customization aspects to tinker with in that department.
Whether or not there is a respec system- there are going to be cookie cutter builds- like it or not. D2 was a great example of how that played out... The D3 skill system is a great integration of the D2 skill system and the WoW Talent System - so you'll really be getting the best of both worlds and have a good number of possible builds available. Again keep in mind- we've only seen 1 set of skill trees so far.
I guess your kinda right. Respeccing in WoW works because it takes forever to level. I guess it all depends on how fast leveling is in D3. Also if they do keep it which im sure they will I hope the cost of respeccing is large.
This con is not really valid. This will exist either way, regardless of respecs or not. Guides will be written and people will be inclined to follow them.
I will only respec if I'm following a specific path and just want to try out a spell from a different talent, then I'll respec back not to mess up my build. But I won't completely respec a character, I'll just start over. D=
Indeed a penalty is always a good thing to put on this to prevent it from being spammed mindlessly. The 50gold penalty in wow was certainly a pain in the ass.
Only thing in D2 that actually added some replay value for me was the barbarian masteries. When I found a new type of weapon with great mods in it, I generally made a new barbarian for that weapon type. I had like 3-4 barbarians and 1 of each other class.
I agree with your post, but what the hell does not having respec capability have to do with cookie cutter builds. On the contrary, unlimited respec capability will lead to homogeneity in skill makeup because noobs will be able to just get a good template online and respec instead of actually building their character properly.

If you want to be a real hardcore (not as in die once) player, then don't respec. You don't have to.
They have said there will be a cost to respeccing (I quite like Star Wars: Force Unleashed respeccing where in order to redistribute your talents/skills, you lose 1 point as a reset cost)
Because they have said there will be a cost (whatever it may be) the ultimate uber-characters (that you see in D2 now) will be ones created from scratch, that don't have this negative cost associated with them.
For people who don't want to replay the whole game to fix an early mistake, let them respec
i check your posts , and i think - We are both in almost same opinions.
Let's hope blizzard keep the hardcore gaming as it is ... Diablo is not lamercore game as WoW is !
WoW is way more hardcore than Diablo is ...lol wtf? WoW happens to be on a much larger scale...and takes hardcore gaming to a new level - you can't say that diablo is more hardcore than it because diablo doesn't even have the character depth + game content to compare... (think Arena, Think End-gAme raiding). Again with the comparisons...and pointless WoW hating... Make a point and stick to issue of respeccing please...
What's worth in replaying the game if you're doing the same thing with the same character, just a few points different? Respeccing doesn't reduce replay value, it enhances it.
False.
A dedicated player will replay the game as many times as it takes to get a build where each skill point is used optimally.
This is the only reason why I played for years.
As soon as I finished building that char, and found all items, I was finished with the game and never touched it again.
If there is a respec system, there will be no reason to play through the game with any class more than once.
LOL! You people would honestly just keep ONE character around (per class) because of respeccing? I highly doubt that. Personally, I will still have various builds for each class. Not only do they have to carry radically different equipment, I don't want to have to respec for every particular kind of situation.
When I played D2 my entire focus was on pvp. Thats what I loved the most about the game especially in patch 1.09... I cannot speak much for 1.10 because I quit playing after the first season. My hybrid asn was my main character that I put all my dedication into. Sure I played lots of other chars with different builds but my main focus was my hybrid asn. The reason this fits into respecs is because I would create new versions of my asn ever few months. Nothing huge just tweaks to make it as pefect as I could. If I noticed something I could change about my build and items I would right it down on a list of changes for the next version of my char. After I had a decent size list I would create a new char and implement my changes and rinse and repeat a few months later. These little tweaks im sure did not make a huge difference but for me it was more of a mental advantage knowing that I am just a little bit better than before and it would improve my pvp performance. This is one thing, other than playing skill that helped seperate myself from other less dedicated players. I am sure lots of other hardcore players out there did something similar to this. Anyway as long as leveling in D3 is not a long and rigerous process like it is in WoW then I will still be all for removing respecs.

Lol@WoW fanbois getting pissy and shit. It's a fucking game.
Seriously though, respeccing is just a faulty concept from the get-go. Don't use it? Others will, and I will be at a disadvantage. It wouldn't enhance shit, even if it DID come with a high cost. All this talent and respeccing bullshit really shows us more and more how many ideas from WoW they're copying. Seriously though, at the end, I don't give a shit; all I'm saying is that Diablo should be the game others copy from..Diablo shouldn't copy from others.
I am not hating on WoW at all. I played both D2 and WoW embarrisingly hardcore. They are both two different games and that they should and will stay. Small changes like these make a big difference to me. WoW is a much larger game with a huge fan base but the hardcore WoW players are not anymore hardcore then the Diablo players. Diablo is a fast paced action RPG and WoW is a MMO. I think the main reasons they made changes in WoW like respecs is to satisfy there huge casual player fan base. O yea and leveling in WoW makes me wanna punch a baby in the face.

Uhhh.... " a lot of the fun of d2 was coming up with new build theorys and trying them out" - yeah that's true, except that it took you exactly one day to restart a character and get it to level 85. So your theory is pointless. You could cheat the game that way and respec every day. It's very possible that D3 will be more restrictive than D2 was in that sense. Not to mention that it won't let you reach a high level in an afternoon because THAT is what ruins replayability.
But you can't argue that D2 was more replayable because of no supported means to respec, since everyone was respeccing anyways. I don't want my 'learning process' as you put it, to last 2 months and then to realize that I need to spend another two months to start a better char.

Ya, but dont you think people that actually think out a build should be rewarded in some way. If you make respec easy then as soon as someone comes out with the new 'it' build, it will take 1 second for people to hit the respec button and thats that. They need respec to take at least as long to earn in D3 as it took to build up a new character in D2.
