People all over the place are discussing what should and shouldn't return in D3. One of the things I almost always see on the "do not bring back" list is synergies between skills. I always thought it was a good idea, letting the skills you needed to put points on in act 1 come back and help you in act 4 & 5.
Now, I've never been a competitive D2 player, so I obviously don't know the game breaking flaw of synergies, but surely their misgivings in D2 shouldn't mean their complete removal? D3 is coming back to fix what Blizzard saw as a problem in D2. D2 certainly didn't have a great community, but should that mean D3 removes all aspects of communal interaction? No, Jay Wilson is putting a bigger emphasis on community.
Unless I really'm hopeless, I don't see why synergies are so bad.

D3 Pros: Outdoors environment, night time environment, female Barbarian, rune spell system, the Wizard class
D3 Cons: Fantasy architecture, fantasy armor, fanstasy weapons, no shaders.
Synergies are better then Diablo 2's original system. Much, much better.
However in the D2 skill system itself suck, once most of the skill are worthless without 10+ points. That forces player to use only 1 or 2 skill witch make the gameplay stupid...
In this point D1>D2 by far.
I really hope that synergies return. The skill system in D2 was the best I've seen in any game, and the synergies made it better. Synergies meant builds be more specialized, which I liked. The only problem with the way it was in Diablo 2 was that some skills were made really powerful and others sucked (like hydra/frozen orb) because of lack of synergies. If Blizz can do a similar thing as was in D2 but with more balance, that would be great.

I like the idea of physical synergies like the witchdoctor used. For instance, if you had a druid with level 10 fissure and level 10 solar creeper your solar creeper could cast fissure underneath your opponents.

Most people's beef with synergies is that it forces characters to be too specialized if they want high damage output. And being that specialized can make hell a bitch. I liked them because I no longer had to suck all the way through normal and most of nightmare so that I could be good in hell. The system was better with synergies, but it needs tweaking. I think more cross discipline synergies would be good (fire skills help cold skills, etc.)
Synergies in D2 caused some builds to gain a lot of power, which in turn forced monsters to get harder, which made life hell for a lot of build that weren't on top.
I think synergies are a good core concept; it just didn't work out optimally in D2. It's hard to say whether it would be a successful addition to D3 when we have no idea how the skill system will be constructed at all besides some video clips of the barbarian.
PlugY for Diablo II allows you to reset skills and stats, transfer items between characters in singleplayer, obtain all ladder runewords and do all Uberquests while offline. It is the only way to do all of the above. Please use it.
Supporting big shoulderpads and flashy armor since 2004.

It's the decisions you make when you have no time to make them that define who you are.
