Well for one Wizards can still use swords and shields. And they have a good amount of melee skills (spectral blade, explosive blast) and armor skills (diamond skin and others) and thats not counting rune effects. So yea, not dead.
Plus short of enchant you didn't really have a melee D2 sorc.
Melee sorcs were actually pretty powerful in D2... Your mastery spells increased melee elemental damage as well so you go with a weapon like Baranar's Star with 1-200 cold/fire/lightning, tiamat's rebuke shield and a bunch of +elemental dmg charms/gear and you could hit for 10k plus per hit. I didn't play much after 1.10 so I don't know what rune words/duping really did for the build but with all the damage reduction gear, max block, plus a cold armor/mana shield you could tank anything including in hell and just 1-2 shot most monsters with no fear of immunities since you're doing four types of damage each hit or even throw in some of the melee range spells to soften/snare them first.
Im sort of curious. You all keep throwing around this "melee wizard" idea but I don't think I completely understand what you mean by this. Could someone provide a concept of how a melee wizard would operate? Like do they still cast spells they just run around with a sword instead of a wand? Or do they use "melee spells" like some sort of summoned lightning hammer?
In my opinion I don't see why you don't just use a barb with a fiery magical sword - Ther ya go magic and melee combined.

Blizzard used to care about releasing Diablo III, then they all took an arrow in the knee...
It kind of raises a question ive been wanting to have a serious discussion about at some point, why not scrap archetypes all together ?

that being said, im a lil disappointed in the wizards melee spells, I made some good suggestions over a year ago, but meh, what can you do?
