So I'm using frenzy on my barb, and thought I found a weapon that was a good substitute for another as it would increase my DPS, but I was mistaken.
So this was my prior build with the weapon I was planning to switch, I have a DPS on 106.61:
I switched it with this weapon, and now my DPS has gone down to 94.76:
And this was the weapon in my alternate hand:
Now, I'm just downright confused as to why my DPS went down as opposed to going up. The DPS on the axe itself is higher than the sword. I'm guessing maybe it has something to do with the 15% bonus attack speed from dual wielding? Oh, and if I swap the axe and sword between my hands so that the axe is in my main hand, the DPS goes down as well. Could someone please explain to me what is going on here?
I see what you're saying, but my rebuttal with that claim about attack speed affecting higher DPS more greatly because of its bonus is kind of refuted by the fact that the axe has more damage than the sword.
I'll take your advice and read more about it on the forums. Thanks
Let's say you have a weapon that does 15 damage and gets you 1.3 attacks per second and another weapon that does 13 damage and gets you 1.5 attacks per second. They both do the same DPS (19.5). Now, let's say you get +5 damage from from your equipment. The first weapon now does 20 damage and 26 DPS. The second weapon now does 18 damage and 27 DPS. The reason? That +5 is getting applied an extra .2 times per second with the second weapon, which accounts for the extra 1 DPS.
Basically, if you have a lot of +damage on your gear, then a higher attack speed is probably going to help you out more because then you are maximizing both multiplicands instead of just one.
As the OP's have said somethings in your skills can have an affect, also the 2% attack speed makes a difference. I dont know if it applies to both weapons or just one (id assume its both, otherwise it would just lower the attack speed on the actual weapon.)
With that 2% attack speed increase you are now hitting every 1.4 sec instead of 1.43 seconds. Same thing with your off-hand. It would now hit at 1.27 speed instead of 1.3. While the numbers done seem that different it does make a difference.
That. But note that this is only true for generators/skills that use cast time. There are plenty of skills which are instant like the grasp of the WD where only pure damage counts, and attack speed is irrelevant. For these instances the higher raw damage is obviously better because skilldamage is calculated based on damage and not on DPS.
Yes and no to that, poison dart is instantaneous (ignoring the DoT portion) but if you have a low ATS you can't shoot your next shot as fast and it is painfully obvious with a 2 handed weapon. Overall you have to assess what abilities you are using, considering that grasp is a CC move I wouldn't be using it as a main focus for a slow weapon.

Playing Diablo since 97. I know nothing and having nothing good to say, I be a troll.
Poison dart is not an instant spell. Yes it goes off instant but it has recovery time afterwards. What I mean are real instants like grasp which has no recovery time. Summons are another great example for instant spells (I believe they always attack at the same speed regardless of how much you have). I'm not too familiar with the other classes but there are a few of em. Mostly spells with cooldown are without recovery.
Ahh gotcha, thanks.

More damage for same resources isn't always better; if you’re over killing everything you lose that efficiency since there is X amount of damage being wasted before you can land another attack. Honestly I haven't had many issues with resources YET, I'm sure it will be different much later on.

Thanks for all the help guys, but the math wasn't the problem. Well at least I hope it wasn't else I'd be putting math majors to shame
I also tested each item by taking off my armors with +dmg on them, but the sword was still giving me an increased DPS.
This lol I totally forgot about the passive. This explains it all, and if I turn weapon mastery off I get a higher DPS on my axe rather than the sword as it should be.
