It's an interesting situation. I actually thought Brevik's interview was one of the more unprofessional things I've seen in my time. I know from my own experience in the games industry that you absolutely would not put shit on a former employer like that. It's just not done.
Ironically, of course, it only stood out in my mind as particularly unprofessional for a few hours, before Jay Wilson came along, took the lack of professionalism, doubled it, and doubled it again.
Agree with the moderator that claims need to be verified before jumping the gun, but several game media sites are running this gossip as breaking news, people who saw it unfold like a few angry people in this thread and myself, can verify it was a legit post. Much like the 10 bow AH hack a few weeks back, it sounds like a myth but those of you online when it happened, know it happened.
In regards to the post, yea its bad-PR, but who cares?
My mum swears like a sailor, and after living in Aus for 3 years, I find it difficult not to break into curse words myself. Its bad language, its unprofessional, but its just a gaffe, he has several hilarious ones already online.
You probably woulda done the same thing, although maybe not if you were pulling his salary.
You can't belive this is real? Then don't check out the emails from the LIBOR scandals, people talk like ordinary people.
Even if this is an epicly succesful troll, 1.04 is so close... IMHO anything not 1.04 is old news already
You'd better care. When the current game creator tells the father of the game to go fuck himself, it's pretty bad. It's pretty bad because you know he'll disregard anything good people have to say about D2. Now you know why D3 is nothing like D2. I'm not saying it's the worst game (I'm still playing it) but it could've been oh so much better.
//Oh, and also: suck our collective cocks JW. You fat fucking piece of shit.
The "father of the game" wanted to make it claymation. Diablo wouldn't be a national past time if Blizzard didn't say "screw claymation".
Also stop cursing. When you post in forums you abide by the forums' rules. If Jay Wilson came to this forum and said "Fuck Sartorius" I'd infract him too. No one is above the rules.

Fair enough. Rage has been contained.
I'm glad we're on the same page now.
I'm a fan of Blizzard and will take no side in what is going on, but instead of everyone going around and cursing we can instead talk like civilized people and argument our answers. It's what Diablofans has always been and will always remain. Against Blizzard or not this is not something we decide - it's always been about the community.
But hopefully the community notices our support for their involvement here and starts behaving like normal people.
If this is true, it shows a disrespect for the game that Diablo 3 was suppose to live up to. This disrespect shows why Diablo 3, in my opinion, didn't live up to its predecessor. So they "ruined" what was suppose to be game of the century, because they didn't pay it the respect it deserved. I've never liked Jay Wilson, especially not since the "Shut up PvP guy" video, and this sure as hell hasn't helped.

Did Blizzard tell him to screw claymation or did Blizzard North tell him to screw claymation? There's also the fact that D2 isn't claymation which means all the bad ideas (whomevers) get filtered out in the development process which means he's obviously doing something right, either by listening to his peers and/or having a good grasp of what is good and bad for the genre. The end result is a franchise considered an all time classic. I don;t think it's too far-fetched too say he's the father of Diablo or that Blizzard North was.
I think if I was developing or trying to fix an ARPG I would listen to what he had to say.
I'm gone for 2 months and come back to an explosion of drama in the Diablo universe!
I hope none of this has an effect on the games progression!

We all should be aware of how it went by now:
Before there was Blizzard North there was Condor. A company developing a somewhat RPG-horror mix. Blizz liked it so they put a ring on it. Bought the company, renamed it, and just like Justin Timberlake in his great role in The Social Network, said "just one thing, drop the claymation".
Booya. Hit.
edit: I guess I can explain it better with saying something like "Imagine if Halo was originally a strategy" (which btw I think it was).

Did he drop claymation because his budget just increased due to being bought out? Claymation sounds very niche and something an indie company with a limited budge might use to compete with the big mainstream players. Either way the whole claymation thing was obviously not some huge overriding design principle he cared that much about or else I'd imagine he would have stuck to his guns. What I'm trying to say is a person can have bad ideas but what sets them apart is that they can recognise the bad ideas and change them and so you end up with just the good ideas in the end product and Diablo was certainly full of good ideas. I think that was the main difference because some not so good ideas got through into the end product here.
I watched a lot of interviews with the Runic designers who are ex-Blizznorth and I just get a feeling like they've been there before and know what works and what doesn't and what they have to say is worth listening to.
Kudos to Jay, he put his heart and soul into this game, if the "father" of the series can't say anything good about it then that just makes the game look like crap, especially if the internet gets to it, which it already has!
Jay has the right to make the comment he made.

I think the main problem is he didn't actually comment on anything said in the interview but rather just called Brevik a loser and used expletives. I think Brevik was trying hard to be as innocuous as possible even though the interviewer was obviously trying to coax out a sound bite or two.

You bring up a pretty good point, I guess it comes down to how people respond to criticism towards things they put a lot of effort into. If an artist spends 2 years creating a painting and finally completing with the mentality that its quite possibly the best art they've seen, and someone were to come along and just say "this is terrible!" then it would depend on the artist's level of restraint to not lash out at them.
Ofcourse this analogy isn't the greatest ever, all I'm trying to say is that when you put nearly 12 years of effort into something you have a real passion for and get such criticism then I can't imagine you would be too civilised about the response you'd give. Especially if the criticism is from such a figure as Brevik.

Runic games are a professional bunch, everyone that doesn't see that has a problem with the industry as a whole. But if you can track down what the other ex-Blizz North employees have done you'll see that their individual efforts have amounted to almost nothing. It's obvious that you need a well coordinated team with a good lead. Thankfully it worked for Runic, but not before they moved away from Bill Roper who was by far and large considered the "father of Diablo" at that time.
It's funny how that title goes around. "Father of the game". These days it seems like every developer out there that is against Blizz's current look on their own games and an ex-employee is the "Father of the franchise". I worked at a game company once and when SC2 went out there were HUGE outcries within it by the anti-Blizz community. HUGE. You know why? "The fathers of the franchise" were gone for good. "Almost none" of the SC1 developers had stayed in the company and so the game was destined to fail. Even after its first 6 months after launch people pointed at SC2 like it was the foster child of Godzilla and Tinker Bell - a catastrophic mutant. Two years pass and SC2 is still the most successful strategy out there with almost no one talking about it failing at all. Because it didn't.
Fast forward to Diablo 3. Bashiok was once the face of Diablo 3 as he was the only active person that told stories from the kitchen. Now Jay Wilson had to step up to it as he's the lead on the project itself. Bashiok was an old and respected Blizz employee from ye old WoW times, but who the hell is this guy? Jay Wilson? Never heard of him. Must be absolute shit. I'll take my position against his game right away so that I'm sure to be one of the first on the bandwagon when the company doesn't deliver.
Fast forward some more. Diablo 3 is "being delayed", not officially but we all know that's what happened. Then it got delayed officially. The first actual official delay of a Blizzard game. Shit is now going to hit the fan. Hundreds of thousands of people are pointing fingers at the not-deliverance of the game. So what do Blizz do? They rush it. Many features are left out for future patches, balancing is not at an all time high and the game's server-side hardware is just not there yet. But the community had to have the game now. It had waited 10 years, they needed it RIGHT NOW. And so it happened.
Here we are now. The love child of Jay and company comes to fruition and it's not what Blizzard usually deliver. It's not, because Blizz usually deliver when they feel like it. This time they didn't. They succumbed to the "fans" and this is the result. The game is not finished, everyone calls it a Beta, features are missing, lots of work to be done. So the 40 or so team of Diablo (which is really abysmal btw, Ubisoft has hundreds of employees across 6 studios for example, which they all pull to a singe entity when a new part of Assassin's Creed is developed) start on fixing these things and a guy that used to work there and PERSONALLY CONGRATULATED THEM ON THEIR SUCCESS BEFOREHAND IN JUNE comes and gives an interview on a site and says it's not how he would've done it. He doesn't like. How would you respond?
I didn't really want to go into detail of what Brevik said. It's up to the people to decide how well he behaved himself when talking about the game. If people want to inform themselves they're free to do so, the interview is all around.

I'm sure once the original Blizzard North employees were cast into the wilderness things changed. Less money, less resources (I'm assuming all the art/music assets stayed with Blizzard) and they had to start over. I think that played a part in some of their failures but their firm grounding in the basics of the genre, the crux of what makes a game work is still evident in their designs.
As to the "Father of X" moniker, I personally have no problem with any of the original Blizzard North employees labelled with this even though the process involved a wider selection of talent. Sort of like how Peter Higgs is considered the father of the Higgs Boson but a large number of scientists had submitted important papers on the subject.
D3 was in development for a long time, a very long time considering the resources Blizzard has to throw around. I don't think the fan base getting annoyed and impatient is unreasonable and I also don't think "we didn't have enough time" is a valid excuse for the end product. Is there a group of individuals out there that are anti-Blizzard? Most likely, but with SC2 the noise was nowhere as loud as it is with D3. I don't think this sustained displeasure with D3 can be put down to the internet hate brigade.
SC2 wasn't rushed out. And no matter what the community says the game needs to be in development until it is at a nice playable level. Which didn't happen. Wonder why the old WoW community hates the new WoW community? Same reason.
Also I don't see what developers not having their old assets has to do with their future in other companies. The assets are for an already published game that's done with. Why would they reuse them? Not to mention they weren't "cast in the wilderness" as I explained sometimes earlier. They were all invited into Blizzard, but some decided they don't want to be a part of this, likely because their philosophy didn't match.
So many people complaining about Jay Ruining the Diablo franchise, why are they still visiting forums/fan sites dedicated to the game then?
Diablo 3 has a great replay value for the 60 bucks it cost.
Same reason I post here and on the official forums. I like the franchise, it has value beyond simply playing the game. I like to discuss games, good or bad, with people.
My playtime has been pretty sparse after the first 2-3 weeks of release. I log in once in a while now to try and pawn off some remainder items I still have in my stash. But I visit the forums everyday to keep up with any upcoming changes that might turn things around.
But maybe it's just what I do and I'm of the minority.
