With release approaching at what feels like a crawl - one of the main topics on my mind is items. I thought maybe some folks might have missed this quote, which was burried about a week ago inside Bashioks 15 reply rant on Customization. This quote, basically set all my fears at rest as far as items go. I know it had already "mostly" been confirmed that there would be skill mods on items - but to hear it said so specifically really made me happy.
Official Blizzard Quote:
In addition, we find that gear as well as just play experience will influence someone's build as they go. Someone might pick up an item with a +skill mod, and decide to swap around their build to benefit from the item. If they enjoy it they'll start building out a set that really feeds that new build. In addition to the Nephalem Valor buff which penalizes changing builds mid-game, there's a large amount of item and skill investment in perfecting a build that lends itself to sticking with it.
What do you think? If you find a super awesome item at level 50 that buffs a skill you aren't currently using do you think you would switch to it?

Of course, this standard procedure for many people in games. It's not always my favorite choice but there have been many times in games where I got killer weapon and chose to change my play style to take advantage of that.
On the flip side, there have been times I refused this too...
I think alot of it will depend on the particular Mod - if its just a sraight +damage % I might not take it - but if it was longer Blizzard duration - like a really good roll of + duration to blizzard - I could see my self building around Blizzard just because of that.
As long is the skill isn't a lame spell like disintegrate I can see myself permanently altering by build. I would definitely try it out and let the results decide.
I agree that the data mined skill affixes look a bit weak - but i tend to think we haven't ever seen the full list.
I do wonder if there will be rune specific item affixes - Like Increase the Radius of the Ray of Frost rune that swirls around you.
That is something which would have been a lot more interesting. And they basically had most of the animations done already, from the old rune levels.
Oh well, maybe in the expansion.

Generally for my playstyle, if such an item were to drop, I personally would not change my current skill set to benefit from it ... especially if what Ive been using so far is actually working well for me.
However, getting such an item proves valuable in that you can easily sell/trade it to someone who's skillset is actually using said skill, and they'd be all over it instantly. You can then get something you need which fits your character.

For me it would depend on the skill. While choosing skills with the calculator, there are some that are pretty close and it's hard for me to choose one over the other. If an item dropped that buffed a skill that almost made it into my build, and I felt ended up being better than the skill I chose, then I would probably switch things around. Or even if I wanted to try and ability, but felt it wasn't as powerful as I would like it to be, then found an item that buffed it, I'd probably definitely switch things around to at least try it out for a bit.
I found myself switching my build in beta almost every time something unlocked. Even if I didn't particularly like a skill I'd try and use it for a level just in case and redo my whole build to keep the overall build balanced. For instance I hated spectral blades, but after using it for a while I found it was great for slicing through 6-7 urns at once.
I think the point is more experimenting that changing whole builds.
For example, I don't plan on using hex for my WD. But if I get some awesome helm with plus hex also on it, I may try it out just for a bit. A may find it pairs better with a skill I currently use and decide to swap it out for a different skill. Then maybe I unlock another skill and enjoy it paired with hex. Now I might take that even though I wouldn't have before.

I don't think I'll switch my entire skill build just because of an item that adds a bit of damage to it.

Maybe after some balance patches.

No, I'll sell it to someone who uses that ability and use the gold/balance to buy an upgrade that fits my own playstyle.
thats the wonderful thing of non-bop gear.
I'd sell it, cash out, and keep enjoying the game while i look for the ones i want to use
Whats to say thats its not like that already??
