Just thought I'd see out of curiousity why people make a male character or female character. Also why that gender?
As for me, I'd make a female character I've always leaned towards making female characters in all the games I play because I'd rather look at a girl than a guy.
I really like the look of the female Monk, Barbarian, Wizard, and Demon Hunter - so that is the gender I'll probably be rolling with for those classes. For the Witch Doctor, while the female version looks cool, I find myself much more drawn to the 'archetypical' image of the male Witch Doctor.
Somehow, when I first saw him in that video way back in 2008, it was love at first sight. To this day, the WD is still the class I want to play the most, largely just because of how cool he looks :P.
I usually make male melee characters and female ranged characters. Many melee animations for female bodies have a bit of a 'delicate' feel. When you hit something there shouldn't be anything delicate about it.
Having no access to the beta I'll leave my decision until I've had a bit of a mess around with them. If it hooks me like D2 did then I'll make multiple toons of the same class anyway.

I'm a male irl. I play a male in all my games if it can be helped.
I find it extremely creepy when males play female characters.
I find it even creepier when they justify it with "I don't want to stare at a but" really?
I would argue that you are contradicting your manliness by using a male character. Like you, I am going to be spending most of my free time after the game comes out staring at whichever character I choose and, being a man, I'd rather be staring at a female demon hunter. She has been in my dreams for months... http://techland.time.com/2010/10/23/blizzards-new-diablo-iii-trailer-the-feisty-demon-hunter/

Obviously, we know that we're gonna end up with each gender per class.
Don't fool yourselves.
I always roll male unless the character looks like it's sexually liberal, in which case I'll give the female a chance.
