(OLD NEWS NOW) A few hours ago, Bashiok cleared up his quote... this might sting for a lot of people:
Quote from "40149131792" »
Chat channels are in, and working. They're more like the Diablo II IRC style than the individual chat windows like StarCraft II has.
Having ways for friends and acquaintances to create social groups has been in the long term plans of the new Battle.net for some time. Whether they're called clans or not is a smaller detail. It's just getting the time to work on adding in those types of want-to-have features. Almost assuredly not for the launch of the game, but hopefully at some point in the future
It seems there's been some confusion taken from the above statement I made back in September. The chat in Diablo III is exactly as I described, you do all of it in a single window. StarCraft II has a system where each chat is broken out into a separate window, chat program-style, but Diablo III keeps it all in one. The same single window that's used for chat when you eventually jump into a game, too.
As far as having open public channels, there's far more negative to them than positive and we maintain a stance that creating an open chat environment without a social structure behind it is an invitation for moderation and support disasters. Most people that want chat channels though are referring to guild channels, or otherwise channels they themselves can operate and choose to invite others to, and we see those as completely valid forms of chat (there's a social structure backing the channel). As I said, back in September, it's unlikely to be anything we attain for ship, but the social group-type chat features are still very much a desire for the future.
Let's hope Blizzard knows what they're doing this time (with Bnet). They still don't with SC2, even after years of constructive criticism from top community members in both the general SC2 community and in the mapping community. That's not to say the new bnet is bad at all, but that people prefer seeing hosted games and having easy/simple chat channels.
We may argue over antiquated skill systems, auto-stats, or w/e else, but I think this is one area we can be unified in...
it really depends on how it will work. if we could set up a channel that other people can join by knowing the name of it, that's fine. kind of like how it works in HoN. every clan has a channel by default and you can join any channel you know the name of (as long as it's not password protected).
at any rate, not having channel slike "Diablo 1" or "Diablo 33" that you auto-join when you load into b.net is kind ofa disappointment. :/

Even what you mention would be great
To be fair, SC2 did get channels that you can join freely, but comparing to War3, and especially the chat commands on top of it, it's not even close.
I didnt think they would be like stated above (diablo1 diablo28..ect) but I was thinking we would have a bit more at the release. ohwell

ohwell.
i think you're missing something. diablo ii irc style suggests taht it will be like diablo 2, where you log in and there is like a "Home" or "Status" channel that you auto-join. or you may also join your clan channel if you'r ein one. then from there you can join other channels, other clan channels, or just join a matchmaking game. but this kind of brings up another point they were talking about on the official beta boards - being able to create your own games with your own game names.
being able to find a game where there will be other people with your play style (rush, no rush, real co-op, vent-driven, etc.) is a big part of fostering a game community.
all in all, i would be happy if on release we could create diablo 2 style chat channels called "diablofans" or something and you could just type /join diablofans to join it and chat. it would be especially awesome if the chat channels included character portraits. we just don't know enough yet :F

Which means what he if referring to as in, is in. Aka its a wow style.

Im trying to find out if whats "already in" is referring to in beta, or in release build.

what i think he means be "is in" means it's in the game that the devs have. levels 14 - 60 are in the game, but not in the beta, as in we don't know what they're like or we don't have any proof that they're "in" so to speak, but they are.
yeah (I updated my post after you quoted). Im trying to get more info on that exact part
I always figured they were exactly like d2 (minus the general ones), but in the release build. But with that last blue, it seems like that 100% not the case.

sadly i don't think they will be exactly like d2, and even more sadly, i don't know if blizzard recognizes this as the problem that it truly is. the chat channels were the lifeblood of d2. in a game that is played in such a fragmented manner (basically an mmo population divided into separate instances of 8man(?) games) there must be some system in place which binds us all together. in d2, that was the irc style chat channels.
it doesn't have to be exactly like d2, but it has to serve the purpose of wrangling all the d3 players onto a common ground where we can show off our gear, chat and make friends, view each other's achievements, and just generally socialize.

!!! I promised myself chat channels! Still waiting for a reply on more details about this. I would really like to know more details on this, as comparing the chat we have now to d2 over sc2 just seems odd.

Blizzard completly lost it's way with interface and communication. SC2 is an disaster and D3 doesn't look good so far. And those blue posts only reduces my hopes further.
It's really annoying how far blizzard takes it's "control the game experience to ensure quality" philosophy.
So D3 is going to feel like a single player game, except it's going to be online only.
Just like SC2 shows "over 1 million players online" when you log in, but there's no real way to communicate with those other players. You're trapped in your little bubble.
Good luck trying to make friends while everyone is rushing towards the boss, or rushing off in their own direction to do an event (like the jar of souls), or crafting, or whatever. No one talks in the beta, everyone just rushes. No clans, no guilds, no community = no longevity.
How could they not have learned their lesson from the community outrage over no chat channels in SC2?
I'm in the beta, and I can tell you right now, the social aspect of D3 is non-existent. Feels exatly like bot runs. Nobody talks, and you can only be so far away from the action before you won't see any exp or loot. That means, the person who runs the fastest thru content FORCES everyone to follow closely.
I have played over 30 games. 28 of those experiences have been utterly horrible. You are automatically put into games (there is no option to search games, give your games titles like "slow casual run for exp and fun" etc). I mean, people don't even say things like "found stairs, come to me". They just blaze through the content to farm SK.
It's not just that there isn't a chat interface. There is NO SOCIAL COMMUNICATION PLATFORM WHATSOEVER. Just one tiny button in the lower right hand corner that, when you click it, shows you have 0 friends.
I can't exaggerate just how bad the co-op experience is right now.
I wonder if Blizzard will respond to the people saying they really, really want chat channels? There was a maxed out thread on the official forums yesterday and today there's a 15 page thread which is still growing. There's also a maxed out thread on the SC2 forums about basically the same thing - lack of community funcionality in battle.net 2.0 - http://us.battle.net/sc2/en/forum/topic/3988232669
