Nov would be amazing but I get the feeling hoping for anything earlier than Dec is just looking to be disappointed. We could definitely get through the beta in 3 months if things go perfectly but that's expecting a lot. Either way for those of us that have been following the growth of the game since the first Trist Cathedral video we are definitely in the final hours. It's hard to not be excited.
Crunch time for ~3 months? Let's all bet how many bugs that would result in.
I hope Blizzard's management is not that dumb.
Deadlines. People have to make them. Some of my best work as a Studio Art major have come from crunch time. You become focused in a way that doesn't happen without that fire lit under your bum.
Couldn't have said it better. I've stayed up days at a time sometimes working on projects for deadlines, and while it's totally exhausting, there's a zone you reach where you're doing your best work and you can keep doing it indefinitely.
Taking breaks destroys your concentration, and it takes time to reach the zone again when you resume. I wouldn't be surprised if most people only stop to make a cup of coffee and take a leak during those kind of hours. Meals are probably mostly eaten while working, or in meetings.
The diablo 2 beta consisted of the whole of act 1. My memory is hazy but it was 3ish months long. I only remember because I practically breathed in any information I could get about the game at the time. I read and re-read magazine articles on the game. I still remember one article had a screenshot of a paladin casting holy bolt and me thinking; "holy sh1t, that looks like one bad ass ability, I'm going to make a paladin first!".
My memory of this is what makes me more skeptical of the "awesomeness" of each abilities appearance in screenshots!

I'm not sure if there was a first wave of closed beta that I was not aware of back then because some people seem to have completely different memories than I do. But my 2 friends and I all got into several waves of stress test beta. From what I can recall it was May/June which is confirmed by this site: http://www.blackviper.com/GamesPlus/Diablo2beta/diablo2.htm
The portion of the stress test that I was in was just the very beginning of Act 1 up to Blood Raven and the only class playable was the barbarian. However, the D2 beta was so long ago and beta conventions have changed so much since then that I would say its essentially irrelevant. If you look at the top post on the page from above you will see that the final weekend of stress test was literally days before release, which confirms what I remember as well. Obviously there is no way that Blizzard would still have beta going days before release this time. It was a magical time, and I am sure it will be similarly as great with D3.
17 hour days would hurt the game. That gives them 7 hours to go home, be with their loved ones, and sleep.
They'd be so exhausted, something would get fucked up.
Yes. Diablo would get fucked up. That's a lot of weaponry he has to deal with.
17 hours of the day he is being stabbed, bludgeoned, sliced, burned, shocked and many other things. He only gets to rest for 7 hours a day. What kind of crap is that?!
