I'm curious about others thoughts on Achievements and their use in the game. I've played quite a bit of WoW and SC2 and although achievements are sometimes fun, when you are bored - they (to me) serve no purpose. The only achievements that I ever went for, were WoW achievements that let you have a new name, or some loot that was fun (broomstick mount on Halloween leaps to mind).
So what would you want out of your achievements? Just the bragging rights of the achievement, or some reward to go along with it?
I personally think there should be some reward system in place, that scales with the difficulty of the achievement.
For example:
Achievement - "The power of (character name) compels you!"
Attained when you kill any demon, anywhere, for the first time
Reward - 10 gold
Achievement - "Master of the Diabloverse"
Attained when you kill Diablo for the first time (you know he's going to be in the game)
Reward - 100 gold
Unique item, level equivalent to your character
Prefix of "Champion" added to your character name
If there was a monetary reward for achievements, I would become an achievement whore.
Adding true value to achievements is a slippery slop and has to be done with great planning. Even a game so well tested at Halo Reach had terrible achievement loops where you could gain undeserved EXP.
To steer clear of any chance of anyone abusing a valuable achievement system, instead I'd love to see aesthetic rewards, as you mentioned with the broom stick.
Such things are character titles, badges for your account, special animations your character could do, or dialog.

I would hope that any system implemented like this, would keep experience out of the possible rewards pool.
I agree that players could stand to gain quite a bit of gold, just by doing achievements, if it weren't carefully balanced. I wouldn't be too worried if the rewards were rather low, seeing as how there are a great amount of players that go after the achievements, regardless of rewards. It would still be nice to have something for the achievement, rather than just another one ticked off the list.
Yea I like the achievement reward idea as well. If Blizzard decides to implement it they will just need to make sure the none of the rewards are taken advantage of. Also, do you think something like ears from Diablo 2 will be implemeted into pvp?
Achievement - "Diablo 3 above all else"
Attained when you collect a radiant star gem of every gem type
Reward - Take a break.

I have heard mention of ears dropping from pvp, perhaps in a bashiok post or some such. who really knows though untill we see it.
As far as achievments go, I also think rewards would be cool for reaching some of the dificult achievements. I am open to a wide variety of rewards, mostly because I believe the game will be well balanced and (I admit I may be a bit ignorant as far as this subject goes but I have an open mind) I don't think there will be any unoticable ways to exploit an achievement loophole for personal gain.
Blizzard has said that achievements (along with PvP by the way) both only give aesthetic rewards. Titles were given as an example, but there could be things like dyes and possibly some other unannounced visual customizations.
