Just to add, maybe they could make legendary weapons and armor that have specific/ unique altogether characteristics or that add entirely unique skills that you won't be able to use any other way.
A dagger that for instance does special kind of poison damage which slows down enemies and weakens their attack and defence.
A spear that has some special kind of animation when first you impale your enemy and he then starts to bleed uncontrolably and then bursts into little pieces. Wooow
Helm that gives you a skill that makes you invisible while not attacking, and slowly drains health and mana while this special skill is being used.
Armor that does thorn damage with vines sprouting out of it.
A shield that gives you a skill to temporarily blind your enemies with light (only during daytime and while outside)
A ring that allows you to see your enemies in infrared or some shit and be able to see them through walls and such. (or in the isometryc style - the ceiling)
etc. Just off the top of my head.
What's your take on this? Do you think they could pull it off?
Lorewise:
These LEGENDARY items were forged and afterwards cast away from both heaven and hell, for they possesed powers too great for an ambitious angel or demon to wield and in wrong hands their use would prove disastrous. Now forgotten from their masters, they lie in Sanctuary - their powers dormant. They are locked into a sub-dimension of the plane of men and can only be drawn from recluse by the presence of the forces that created them. Such grand powers it is said they held, one could simply stand in awe of their very presence.
All things have a price though, for they carry a great curse with them, a burden for those that consider themselves worthy to bear it. Yet during previous otherworldly appearences and incursions, when the lines of these objects to their former masters were re-etablished, it became too apparent that such creations lured men and subdued their minds, breaking their will and casting them into darkness no matter what strenght or wisdom they possesed.
Such I believe was the sad fate of our now deceased king Leoric, a once kind and just man. Brought to him was one day a piece of peculiar metal from one of his advisors - Lazarus. It is said that Leoric became obsessed with it. He had cast it into a crown so that he may wear it at all times, never leaving his side. Soon the good king began to behave more and more strangely, his decisions not portraying his character and eventually when his sole son, the prince, was taken from him by demons - he fell into madness and was no longer able to distinguish friend from foe. Such a terrible price he paid that even in death, his soul was bound to it.
These creations of ages past I believe are equally dangerous no matter from where they find their roots, for both the Burning Hells and the High Heavens are like two sides of the same coin.
Luckily for the mortal realm, after the fall of the Lord of Destruction at Mount Arreat, neither heavenly nor hellish force has walked the soil of Sanctuary and so too the items have not given their giftcurse. Twenty years have passed since then and it seems that this peace will last many more years to come.

The Barbarian is from Arreat, a very cold snowy mountain top, but they are much tougher than normal humans, so they don't need warmth.

Where are Barbarians originally from? Sumeria, or more specifically Mesopotamia, AKA Europe. Think the Alps and the Pyrenees

* Invisible Aura is duh invisibilty for your entire party with a twist: you are cursed with Bloodletting.
* Bloodletting is the skill where you quickly lose health for as long as the helm's invisibility is active.

|durability: charges (3/3)

*Deathcheating would be dark energy sending your character back 5 seconds in the gameplay before you died (counting backwards from the very moment your character dies- just like rewind but with cool effects). Everything is as it was 5 seconds ago- enemies, health, everything (kind of like prince of persia's time ability). After 3 deathcheatings it will dissapear from your inventory.

I think this kind of stuff is really dificult to implement, because it really hurts the balance of the game.
A skill that can be used by all classes is a open rift to exploits because you giving to all classes a new feature. But this feature will surely be better in one classes (Ex: A invisible barbarian could be insane in pvp once the oponent would not have the chance of runnaway from whirlwind or other powerfull melee attack).
Another problem is the fact that this feature are a indirect cross-class skill. This ring gives something pretty much like a Death Proof from Battlemaster barbarian. So this decrease the difference between the classes and take out the unic factor of the battlemaster tree, once everyone will have a way of escape from death through a equipament.
I think the new runes are a good way to give us new skills in items by twisting the original skills. Of course they can make some new and more creative item modes (Ex: The poison dagger you said. It could be just a mode from a dagger not a new skill in a item).
Personally, I think they should just stick with the old system. I feel that it just gets too complicated when you have several different levels of weapons. If they could make it work well, then I might be persuaded.
I think that items like these in multiplayer would be really sick to play with.
The skills or abilities these legendary items give really should be such that won't be found in any character.
Maybe as mods?
Yeah definitely if they added something like this it would have to be skills that aren't part of any tree on any character. Maybe bring back some skills from D2 that wouldn't make it into the game otherwise. Something like lower resist curse maybe. Since the necro isn't making a return. Just a thought of mine.
1 question this brings to mind: Would you be able to enhance the skills with runes as the others can?

also you really arent adding anything to the game as diablo already in a sense has that. also they arent called legendary items and i hope to god that they never will be
Think of another name then. If you think that's generic, then think about 'unique items'. It doesn't get any more generic than that. Normal, Magic...
And how does Diablo already have that?
I understand how Diablo 2 already has that in a way. There are rings and gloves and all kinds of stuff that adds charges of cross-class skills. They were mostly never used simply because they weren't useful mods.
I mean what Barb at level 90 is going to use charges of level 3 fire bolt from a ring?

I think they should just stick to character based skill trees.
But thats just my 2-sense worth.
