I gotta say, I can see why the potion spamming was cut. It's distracting from combat, takes up good hotkeys, and doesn't really add much to the gameplay.
However, the globe system feels kinda like one of those second rate dungeon crawlers on console. Potions at least made sense in the game world, but what are little orbs of life essence doing dropping from monsters and floating above the ground? And how does one use it? You drink a potion... Do you somehow swallow this red ball the size of your head? Or do you just step on it or something?
I say tone the pot spam down, but keep them TBH. You only need two potion hotkeys really, if you want to keep it simple (I never really used any other pots in d2 anyway, except for rejuvs on bosses), just make it so you don't have to tap them constantly and the game can remain combat based without any abstract globules of health floating around.
Truthfully, I think that Dungeon Sieg was one of the better "potion" systems, with two hotkeys, potions being stackable and partially useable. Or even Titan Quest with it's version.
I'm pretty sure that I won't like the health orbs though. It's too much of a pull from immersion.
Honestly, from what we've been shown so far, it makes the game look too easy. That and it makes it look like a crappy little console game. The first thing I thought when I saw the globes was "Well, they went and F'd up the game now didn't they?" There's no thrill in super regen and little globes that drop on the ground. I mean, how realistic is that?
"I just got shot in the head by an arrow, I think I'm going to sit back and catch my breath...there all better!"
Thats about as idiotic as performing CPR for a head wound. That and little globs that heal you on the ground? I know there is "magic" and all that but how realistic is that? Magic potions heal you, not a glob of gooe that dropped on the ground from some monster. In fact, I wouldnt want to eat any sort of gooe that dropped of a decomposing, maggot infested zombie. If anything it would make me sick, not heal me.
For me, what was thrilling about Diablo was getting your ass handed to you and you don't know if you can heal up in time during the middle of combat. Nothing was more satisfying than killing everything and ending up with only 10% of your health left. Not exactly good for you if you have high blood pressure, but very thrilling for me.
Plus if you have even moderate gear and a properly built character in D2, you wont eat through potions like everyone complains about.
At any rate, i understand that Blizzard's goal is to make this game easy to play, but I can just see this ending up being me plowing through the game and not dieing at all if I just play conservatively enough. Granted, the idea is not to die, but I want to at least have that feeling that my "life" is in danger at all times.
And in gods name blizzard, don't try to make the game harder by making Immune Everything monsters in hell! That's not making the game harder, its just making it more frustrating. Make it harder by balancing the game correctly, not by excluding certain characters from being able to complete the game on their own.
I like the heathglobe idea, keeps you fighting and you have to use stratagy when fighting not just pressing the potion button 20 times when taking down bosses
Health Globes sounds like a perfect thing to implement. Potions could be used as non- combat consumables (Example: You have to stop attacking to drink a potion to regain health/mana).
I love the abuse towards blizzard for implementing something which can have very good side effects. Potions are still there, so I don't know why a lot of people are whining about how horrible globes are. They are saving you hitting one key for your potion. Secondly you have no idea about how common potions are, the globes were common yes, but he was also wearing full gothic plate and in the demo he takes 'zero' damage from the archers behind the shield bearers. He's over-geared, he's obviously going to be taking substantially less damage than someone wearing that levels gear. With the inclusion of more monsters doing 'special' attacks like the summoning from the cultists, the massive swing from the berserkers. I can see people of that level actually trying to avoid damage, whereas in d2 it's stand in the fire while spamming potions why move when you can spam your near infinite amount of potions oh wait I'm low on potions *townportal* If potions are vaulable which they might well be ie : not buyable from vendors.
Try looking at it another way as a caster you can focus on bringing mana potions in your slots rather than stacking up on hp potions, your barb / melee friend can get the globes while you drink a mana potion instead of you having to use BOTH at the end of a fight if you want to re-engage another group.
Or maybe your on very little hp, but you still have to fight this group of mobs to get a globe off them. So you actually have to think and avoid damage properly in order to take out the whole group to actually get beneft from killing them. Look at the monster mechanics, they are definatly going to work together. It's a risk/reward thing, I could waste a valuable potion and kill this group easy, or be smart about killing them and actually gain health from their death. People who enjoy playing smart and have the capacity to do so will enjoy this mechanic after trying it I'd say.
If only people would try be constructive rather than out right abuse, we might be able to actually have a conversation about something.

Also, it's good to note they said they tried 'multiple' other health systems and they chose this as the best one. I'm not a game developer but when they've tried many avenue's and they find one that works, I'm happy with their choice especially when it makes sense and has proper application like the globes do. While it might not be realistic, not many of the options are but when it comes to gameplay vs realism I'd 100% every single time take a good TESTED mechanic over something that would make playing inferior as to appease a few peoples realism festish flying around now.. Just some more thoughts.
YOu really need to add an option that is more related to wait and see. I don't believe we have enough information on how the health globes will function to really say they are good or bad. I think it can be good if balanced right, or bad if not. Bag management needs to exist though, if that doesn't happen then I will worry.
So now I have to click and run over to a health orb instead of just pushing a button? What was wrong with pushing a button, just put a hotkey on the keyboard instead of the numbers since thats what they want to use skills for. The space bar? How about the space bar its big and everyone can use it.

please adress all the other points as well beside taking a single one, which can be retorted with a snide remark. Trust people to ignore the logical ones.
You can push a button WHENVER you want, even when there is no orb on the floor. There has to be an orb there for you to walk over and get it. not have 99 potions and spam away while you stand in fire and never die.

agreed xD
spamming pots and standing there is lame, what i do is lose little hp use a pot and pick up another one... i sorta don't get why people are saying its so unrealistic its not like the game is so realistic already with the potions, u can use potions while ur fighting and keep chugging them and u can use them as long as u have some theres no limit...
and unrealistic skills, how bout flying hammers that goes in circles and hits everything in its path.. and teleporting.. (and just a globe of healing is gonna make it so unrealistic)

True. I read it as if they were replacing potions, or doing the WoW thing when it has an enormous cool-down time and costs a pretty penny.

I like the idea. They didn't say you weren't still going to use potions. I think we still need potions, but, the health globes will assist you in dire combat and make it so you don't rely on potions SO much, because, as they said, you could just keep chugging down potions to kill stuff and that isn't exactly fun or creative. I think it's a fantastic idea, to be honest, as long as they keep it very well balanced :).

I agree with them.
If you want to chug potions, they will still be there.
